Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
A "cousin" on another list mentioned something that should really make us
think whenever we are trying to match census records. She had talked with an
older woman who had once accompanied her father who wa a census taker. She
said that if a household wasn't home, they just asked at a neighbor's house
who lived there and how old they were. OK, so how many of you can correctly
spell your neighbor's names (first and last) and know how old they are!!!!!!!
Barbara Meger
Ralph...I was just about to write to take you to task for mistakenly
identifying the Wm. H. Condray in the 1860 census (wife Sarah, ch. Adaline
and Sarah, Eliza and David Chumley in household) as the son of Old Wm. I
thought he was another William because of the discrepancy in the names of
the wife and children and that our William H. got missed in the count.
Fortunately, I looked closely before I wrote and realized that the ages do
match even if the names do not. (Perhaps one census taker went
scrupulously by first names even though the people may have gone by a
middle name.) Now that I know this is our Wm. H., I think "Eliza Chumley"
(16 yrs) in the 1860 is the daughter "Louiza" (5 yrs) in the 1850. The
ages correspond, the name is similar, and it would be reasonable that a
daughter and son-in-law were living with them.
You mentioned that you could not find Thomas H. ( Wm. H.'s son) in the
1860, but I believe he is there on page l59. You may have been thrown off
by the name given for the older son-- Frank instead of Lewis. Sarah
Chumley Condray's father, after whom her son was named, was Lewis Franklin
Chumley, and the ages do come close to those given in the 1870. This leads
me to believe that this is the family of Thomas H. Condray.
Thanks for making me look at this more closely. I've misinterpreted it for
several years!
Regards, Nancy Kendrick
the
I want to send in a correction on this family. On Friday, July 09,
1999 Megerstch@aol. com posting.
I just caught it today! Getting slow in my old age!!
"Molly" Elsiebeth Chumbley married only twice. First husband is
William Arnold Bennett, married Feb. 17, 1867. Second husband is Miles
Leroy "Roy" Quimby. (No marriage date for Miles Leroy "Roy" Quimby.)
Elizabeth Moore Chumbley was only married once to James Matthew
Thompson.
Thanks,

I am trying to make a connection to George K. Chumley (b.1798 d. October 04, 1870) Apparently resided whole life in Spartanburg County, South Carolina he is buried at UNITY BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY, Woodruff, S.C. I have some civil war documents for George that have been passed down through the years but we have not made a connection to him.
His father was William Baxter Chumley born in England and died in Greenville District South Carolina.
His mother was Charlotte Gilbreath.
George K. Chumley had the following siblings: Mariah Chumley, Ollie Chumley(b.1799), William Young Chumley(b.8/23/1815 d.4/25/1898), John W. Chumley(b.1823), Richmond E. Chumley(b.4/11/1833).
Does anyone know about this Chumley line in South Carolina? I am specifically looking for children of George K. Chumley, but any information about this line of the Chumley family would be greatly appreciated.
Has there been any connection to the South Carolina Chumley's and the Claiborne County TN Chumley's?
Thanks for your help
