Dear Nell,
Sorry about the delay in response; my server was down for over 24 hours
9/25 then we are on vacation and the ATT carrier is somehow messed up at
our condo in COLO, they use some other system, so I have not been able to
access anything since Thurs., 9/24. Talk about withdrawal!!!!
San Augustine is in East Texas, east of Nacogdoches about 30 miles, close
to the Sabine River. It is in San Aug. County. I had intended to do an
entire day of the remainder of Chumley Cemetery, but did not have the
chance. This is the info I have on Missouri, tho, in case it applies to
Henderson Chumley: married 2nd Missouri Malissa (Zou) Hardy
children: Columbus B. and Ludie B, twins, b. Mar. 27, 1891, Henry, b. May
28, 1892, Tom Eugene, b. Apr 7, 1895, Clarence, b. May 9, 1899, John b.
July 31, 19(01??); Hattie, b. May 27, 1897.
I have a note that Victoria Henry, first wife, had twins who died at
birth. No date of marriage to Missouri. I hope this helps you. I intend to
post more when e-mail is working correctly.

Hi all,
I'm home!!! What have I missed? Need to know how to access the archives
Cyndi, so I can catch up on everything transmitted since September 10th. We
drove 2900 miles, and I spent a lot of time in the car going over a lot of
the info transmitted just during Aug. & Sept. Have some questions, and will
post them as soon as I can get my act together.

Hi, All! I was typing the following, to add to my FTM file, and
figured I might as well send it along in case any of you wanted a
copy. One thing I find very odd is that it doesn't mention the
Barron Stave and Barrel Company. I have a copy of an article that
appeared in the paper about 1964 that has a picture of Samuel and his
sons and lists them as all working there in 1900.

History of Lawrence County, Missouri
Otto Alonzo Chumbley
This gentleman is the son of Samuel C. Chumbley and Mary E.
(Goodman) Chumbley, his wife, and was born in Verona, Missouri, March
15, 1879. The father, Samuel C. Chumbley, was born in Tennessee, a
son of Robert Chumbley<note from Cyndi Galati-We have John Chumbley
as his father>, and one of a family of eight children, five sons, and
three daughters. Robert Chumbley was born in Green county,
Tennessee, and passed his whole life there as a farmer. He was a
member of the Baptist Church, and in politics was a Republican.
Samuel C. Chumbley was born in Green county, Tennesse, on his
father's farm, and at the age of twelve years, after the death of his
father, came with his mother to a farm near Springdale, Benton
county, Arkansas. This long journey was made across the country by
ox team. The method by which a large majority of the original
settlers came to the entire Ozark region.
At the age of 16 years Samuel C. Chumbley left home and traveled to
Polk county, Missouri, where he remained until the breaking out of
the Civil war, when he enlisted, in Company C, of the Second
Regiment, Missouri Cavalry. He was not to serve long, for in a short
time he was taken sick with the measles, which settled in his hip and
rendered him a cripple for some eight or ten years.
After the war he lived at Warsaw, Benton county, Missouri, for a
time, and from there went to Barry county, and from there to Verona.
He married during the war, Mary E. Goodman, daughter of Sampson and
Alice<note from Cyndi Galati-We have Sarah Lyngar Goodman!> Goodman.
To this union were born a family of twelve children, eight boys and
four girls. America (Haley), is the wife of a miner in Webb City,
Missouri; Albert, is the resident manager of the Wilhoit Oil Company
at Monett, Missouri; Florence (Gray), is the wife of a minister in
Keswick, Iowa; Melinda (Savage), wife of a contractor in Peoria,
Illinois; Edward is a dairy farm manager, at Wichita, Kansas;
Benjamin Franklin, salesman of the Wichita Oil company; Charles, died
in infancy; Alonzo, subject of this sketch; Earnest, of Taylor,
Texas; Victor, owner of pressing and dyeing works, at Keswick, Iowa;
Effie (Kibler), wife of a bookkeeper, in Kansas City; Clinton, a
cooper, in Aurora.
Samuel C. Chumbley was a member of the Baptist church; also of the
Grand Army of the Republic. He served as county clerk, and for
eighteen years a school director in Verona.
The subject of this sketch attended the public school until he was
about thirteen years of age, when he went to work in the Verona
flouring mill, and worked there until it burned down. He then farmed
for two years at home. After that he moved to Republic, and was
employed in the mill at that place, owned at the time by the R. C.
Stone Milling company. He held this position for seven years, and
then removed to Aurora, and had charge of all the machinery in the
Majestic Mill at that place, for two years.
Mr. Chumbley then noted that there was no marble works in Aurora,
and believing that there was an opening for that business he resigned
from the mill and opened a marble working shop. The business has
been a success and he still continues in it.
Mr. Chumbley was married in Verona when only seventeen years of age,
to Miss Addie Wheeler, daughter of R. M. Wheeler and Rebecca (Hoover)
Wheeler, his wife. Mr. Wheeler was a farmer. Mr. And Mrs. Chumbley
have two living sons, Herschel and Harley, pupils in the Aurora
public schools.
Mr. Chumbley is a republican in his politics and belongs to the Odd
Fellows, of which order he is deputy district grand master, serving
his second term. He also is a member of the Elks, and of the Woodmen
of the World. He is a booster for Aurora and always at front of any
call for the betterment of his home town.

Vol. 99 Page 170 "Indian Pioneer History"
Interview 9700
January 14, 1936
Interview with Martha Ann Thomas Andrews
400 North Macom Street
El Reno, Oklahoma
Martha Ann Thomas Andrews was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky, on
May 21, 1873, the daughter of James Chumbley and Lucille Fry
Chumbley. When she was three years of age her parents moved to
Russell County, Kentucky, a distance of about thirty miles. She
remembers very distinctly this trip as her father owned a very
stubborn mule that he wanted to take along. The only member of the
family that could ride him was her father and as the mule would not
lead when tied to the wagon the only thing was for her father to ride
the mule. As they made ready to start Martha Ann set up a cry to
ride with her father on the mule. At last her wish was granted, so
for this reason she remembers this trip very well.
Her first school was built of logs; the roof was made of branches
and sod placed over this; the logs were chinked with mud. A long
broad board rested on the pegs inserted in the logs along two sides
of the room and this.......
That is where the page ends and evidently the person copying for some
reason didn't think I would want the rest. :( If someone has this
article or receives the rest please finish the story to the list! I
would love to know what it says! By the way if any of you get a
chance to go to any of the "Living History Re-Enactments" around the
country please do! It gives you a great perspective of what their
lives must have been like! I found that participating really gave me
an appreciation for what they went through! Sleeping on a rope bed
with a straw tic you really understand why so many of them couldn't
stand up straight! Not to mention not having running water for three
days! :) Any way back to work!!
Good Luck and God Bless,
Cyndi
Andy,
Hi! I just received a copy of the first page of the interview.
What frustrates me is that they only sent the one page when it is
very obvious that the interview continued. If you send a letter to
them and ask for copies of Vol.99 pg.170+++. Make sure to put in
that you would like a complete copy of the article. I have been
waiting until I get my stuff in order, but I have received other
Chumbley stuff that I will be posting in the next few days. If you
don't have a copy of this page I would be glad to copy it for you,
but you will need to order other pages from the OHS any way so I
think I would just go ahead and order the whole article. They charge
$0.50/pg. & $1.50 S&H. I think I would just go ahead and enclose
$4.00 and ask for copies of the article. Otherwise they will bill
you and then send it to you which takes longer. If by chance it is
more for you because you are out of state let me know and I will
order the copies for you! Some of the lookups they do they charge an
extra $15.00 fee for people living out of state! I will type in the
first page of the letter in the next message.
Good Luck and God Bless,
Cyndi

I have Chumbley in my line going back to 1834. Lucy Ellen Fry,
daughter of Charles Fry and Lucinda McClendon Fry married James
Chumbley in Pulaski County Ky on 26 Jan 1859. They had two children.
Sam Bryant Chumbley. and Charles Chumbley. These two were both
doctors according to my information. Lucy Ellen Fry and James
Chumbley were both born in 1834. I am trying to find out who
was Lucy Ellens grandfather . Charles Fry' mother was a Christina or
Christiana Fry and Charles
had been apprenticed to a Valentine Fry in 1821. Charles was born in
1810. Any information would be appreciated.

Cyndi, I still have not been to see Vera Niemiec, but she has moved to
Canyon Lake , down near San Antonio, Tx. She and I have talked and she went
in to San A to do some checking and she believes that Robert and Sarah
Chumbley's children included Ann who married Israel Thomason and that
Elizabeth's name was Sarah Elizabeth Chumbley and that she married Joseph
Alexander Thomason, a brother of Israel. I have the obituary of Joseph
Alexander Thomason, but Vera says that his name was really James Alexander.
I do need to find Jos or Jas and Sarah or Elizabeth in the 1870 census.
They are in Tenn in 1850 and 1860, and in Collin County Texas in 1880. If
we could find them in 1870, we might could prove once and for all what
their names were. We have been told many, many times not to believe the
1870 census of Tenn, that there was still a lot of turmoil. Thank you,
nell

Patty,
Thank you for posting this line to the Chumbley List. We have very little
information on the descendants of Andrew and Elizabeth Chumbley. In fact, on
the one list I have seen of their children, Robert Green Chumbley wasn't even
listed. That list which was found in "Families of Dallas, Lourens, Rogers 7
Some of Their Relatives" by Z. Dallas & E. Lourens (1984) gives Martha, b. abt
1831; James, b. abt 1834; Britain, b. abt 1840; John, b. abt. 1842; Samuel, b.
abt. 1846. Your Robert, being the oldest had probably moved away and whoever
came up with the names didn't know about him.
You may already be aware that there is a pedigree for Robert Green Chumbley on
World Family Tree CD Vol. 12. ( I had noted it with a ? as I hadn't had the
name.)
Barbara Meger
Missouri Chumley b 1858 has Hardy after her name. What could this mean? I
have one Hardy in my line, I have one line that says Hardy. Also,
Alexander is a reoccurring name in the Chumbley and Thomason line. Thomas
Alexander Chumley is buried at San Aug. Please tell me where is San
Augustine. Thank you, nell
