Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Cyndi...
Glad to hear you are still out there & kicking. Miss you. I have also
neglected the list due to a very busy schedule...lecturing, British Isles
Family History Society-USA Journal, and family. I have lots of save
messages to answer to everyone, and hope to get to some of them soon as
between now & the end of Aug. I have 2 more lectures & a television
appearance, plus the BIFHS-USA 11th annual Seminar. I always chair the
committee, do the shopping, & fix the food for the staff & speakers (35-45
people) for 7 meals over a period of three days.

Jill,
Don't completely rule out Elender (b: c.1832) it is always possible
that Walter was a late child and could be the last of the 4 you list.
I know your Ellen is not one of my group through Samuel because none
of his children were born in TN, but one of his brothers might have
had a daughter they named after their sister. Samuel named his
oldest daughter America (my line) after his sister America. The Polk
County GenWeb has a couple of people who do lookups and one of them
really helped my search in the beginning. Right now I don't list
another Elender or an Ellen, but I am sure we will find the tie
somewhere. Glad you joined us!

Hi Cyndi and list..................
The Elender Chumbley b. c.1832 in TN is interesting. If I had a name like
Elender, I'm sure the family would have shortened it to Ellen; however, that
would make my Ellen 37 years old when my Walter M. Jones (b. 1869) was born.
My notes (& nothing verified yet) indicate my Ellen had four children:
Charles; Belle; Hannibal & Walter M. Of course, they may have been too busy
moving to make time for kids :)
I think what I need to do is find a Jones living in Polk Co., MO, during the
1870 census who has an Ellen listed as his wife and son by the name of Walter
M.
All I have for Jones is "Grandpa", no dates or places.
I haven't checked on birth records yet. Do you know, off hand, if any were
recorded in Polk Co., MO. during that time frame? I'll need to go to
GenWeb-Polk Co. for that, I guess.
Thanks for your help.
Could my Ellen be a daughter of your Samuel or another brother of his?

Missouri A. V. Long Lyngar was the first wife of James Harvey and Eliza
(Chumley) Lyngar's oldest son, John Franklin Lyngar. There is record of their
marriage in Dade County Missouri Marriage Records, Vol. I:
Lingar, John F. & Missouri A. V. Long. 24 April 1870. John McFarland M.G.
Witt: David D'Arinone and William H. McBride. Book 4, p. 143.
Another source for the same adds this quote, "...and showing that they had
fully and[deliberately] chosen each other as bosom companions for life, and
were secretly pledged to each other for a faithful perfomance of all the
duties arising out of the marriage relation...I did then and there aggreably
to their wishes and conforming..."
According to the recollections of Thedra Lyngar Edge they had three children,
Frank Jr., Minnie who married a stone (Thedra adds that she was 'spirited and
sharp-tongued'), and Charles who was a dentist and died in Kansas City (Thedra
said he was quick-tempered).
John Franklin Lyngar was known as 'Frank'; he married (2) Anna___ and they had
Willard and Lillian. Thedra said that "Frank died in his chair after having
spent a rigorous night and a.m. visiting patients with an epidemic of flu.
Before huim was a list of patients to see, but he told his wofe he'd have to
rest a minute. Whenshe found him, because a patient had come to their house
for a prescription of medicine, he was sluped over with his head touching on
the list of calls he intended to make."
Thedra also
I don't know when he died, but Thedra said he lived, practiced and is buried
in Greenfield, which is Dade Co, Missouri. She also said that he was "just
naturally a doctor, and his father sent him to medical school. He went on to
New York for awhile as a surgeon, and was a dedicated family doctor like
Andrew [his brother]. He was about 2-2 1/2 years older than Andrew." I
assume he went to Washington University in St. Louis because that is where
Andrew went to medical school. I have a cousin in Kansas City who has made a
connection with one of Frank's descendants. The two of them have planned to
get together for several months to trade information. I will let everyone
know as soon as something comes from that.

In 1988 edition of Ozarkin, notices from Dade Co Advocate: Mrs.
Missouri A.V. Lyngar was born in Greenfield, Dade Co, on Dec. 1, 1848
and died March 12, 1886, age 37 y 3 m 11 d. Miss Missouri Long was
married to Dr. JF Lyngar on April 24, 1879. She leaves behind her
husband and three children. Eulogy. March 18, 1886. Can anyone
putthis in its context? Joyce
Does anyone know who the parent's of Andrew Chumbley were? Andrew Chumbley
was born 1816 VA, married 2/12/1843 Wilson County TN to Elizabeth Ann Edge.
Their children were Sarah, Ellen, Mary, Thomas Eli, Elizabeth and John.
Andrew may possibly be a son of Dennis Chumbley, who was a son of Daniel
Chumbley who died in 1846 Wilson Co. TN. Daniel listed children Richard,
Dennis, Beverly, Pleasant, Nancy Harvey, Polly McDaniel, Sally, Rachel
McClennahan, Kiziah George, and Franky Hathaway in his will. Dennis,
Pleasant, and Andrew Chumbley were listed living in the Roundtop District of
Wilson County in 1850. I would like to contact anyone knowing about these
Wilson County, Tennessee Chumbley families.
Thanks,

Hi...
Sounds like a great interview! I too have had an instance when I know my
grandmother "chose not to recognize the fact" regarding something in the
past. I loved her expression: "...you are going to find dirt if you dig
deep enough."
I have only been researching since 1981, and as I have mentioned to
numerous people on the Chumbley list, a lot of my info had been sent to me
by other researchers. Because I have spent the bulk of my research years on
my maternal NICKEL line (CHUMBLEY > GOODMAN > NICKEL), I have not done too
much on the others. I must admit, though, I have spent quite a lot of time
combing thru the court & deed records of Claiborne Co., TN and I'm by no
means through.
Will be most happy to exchange any thing I have with you. E-mail does not
replace the actual document, and no one seems to know right now how much
weight it carries as far as validity. I have a few pictures of Goodmans,
and Chumbleys, but no Lingars. The oldest Chumbleys I have are Samuel
Chumbley & America (Chumbley) Goodman and her children, grandchildren &
great grandchildren, & also a few of Samuel's children. I have a photo of
Dr. Thomas Kelly Goodman, and of his wife, and a couple of their
grandchildren, by Talmadge, and a number of pictures of Oliver, his wife
Cora, and their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren.
I have a couple of pages from Samuel Chumbley's Civil War Pension file.
I'm certain there are more papers, but the gentleman who sent them to me
mentioned (?)" the file had not yet been completed on microfilm."
Thanks, for the Address of John Keith Lourens...many of the Family Group
Sheets that I received from Juanita Martin, in Stephensville, TX indicated
the info came from Reatha.
Got to go...I'm supposed to be working on the Summer issue for the British
Isles Family History Society - U.S.A., and I'm getting sidetracked. Talk to
you later. Especially since I need to repeat a message I sent very late one
night. I was talking about 1 John Chumbley and jumped to the next John
Chumbley. Although I knew where I was going, I certainly did not make it
clear that I had jumped generations, so it looked like I was still
discussing the same John Chumbley. Your eagle eye picked up on it, but I've
never had a free moment when I could come back and ask the question again.

I would like to respond to Sharon's informative (thank you very much) posting.
Documentation IS important. While I don't have any concrete proof, I do have
a second-hand source which may give someone a clue as to where to look. A
couple of months ago Cyndi posted for me recollections by Thedra Lyngar Edge,
youngest daughter of James Harvey Lyngar. [If anyone missed this, I will be
glad to send it to you.] Thedra and I corresponded in the 1960's and I also
interviewed her; she was in her 80's. I will quote from her. Be advised,
though, that Thedra either did not know or chose not to recognize the fact
that James Harvey's sister Sarah lived in the same neighborhood.
"My Fathers Parents is where the Lyngar History is so obscure my Father said
He was only three years old when His Father Died and only 6 years old when His
Mother Died. There were 3 children left orphans--a brother, a sister, my
Father the youngest. different families took the children to rear. Father

always asking strangers if they had ever heard the name of Lyngar...It seem my
Father's Father came into the country where his Mother lived Father thought
whe was Born in one of the Carolina's it seems no one knew much about Mr.
Lyngar. Father did not remember His Father or Mothers given or first name.
it seems his Father had no relatives Father thought his Mother's Cousins
helped to rear him in the Coumberling Mountains of Tennessee State...
"He was never told about his own family or parents. He thought that he was
probably passed around after his parents died. He remembered a colored slave
who had been kind to him before his mother died...He always felt that there
had been a little money in his family. He never heard of any nationality..."
Also, "Families of Dallas, Lourens, Rogers & Some of Their Relatives" is by
Zeila Rogers Dallas & Eureatha Rogers Lourens and dated 1984. I found a copy
of it on the shelves of the DAR Library in Wash. D.C. There is a contact
address, but who knows how current it is (John Keith Lourens, 47 Matthews Ave,
Enon, OH 45323).
Hope this helps someone.
Barbara Meger
Hi all...
Have been so busy for the last couple of months that I have not been doing
any research, or joining in on any e-mail messages. Right now I'm in the
middle of getting out the Summer issue of the Journal for the British Isles
Family History Society - USA.
But had to respond to this message, because I had some questions, and I
wanted to clear up some errors. For years I have been trying to document
every piece of info I have received from other researchers, because info
without documentation is basically worthless. I dearly love e-mail, but
sources are rarely included.
Over the years I have corresponded with a number of CHUMBLEY, LINGAR,
GOODMAN researchers, and a couple have come up with John Lingar being born
in France, or in Portugal. I would dearly love to know the source of the
information regarding his birth in France. The only reference to his place
of birth that I found was in the Records of Men Enlisted in the U.S. Army
Prior to the Peace Establishment, May 17, 1815. No. 1586, John Lingar,
Pvt., 24 U.S. I., Capt. Silas Stephens Co.. Height: 6, Eyes: hazel, Hair:
dark, Complexion: dark, Age: 38 (difficult to read...may also be 33),
Occupation: Farmer, Where Born...State: N.C., When Enlisted: Sept. 6, 1814,
Period: D. War (duration of War), Remarks: D.R. dated Feb. 16, 1815.
Discharged at Mobile, April (?) 8 or 3, or 18, 1815, term expired. See
pension case. I received a photocopy of this info from the National
Archives.
I'm also curious about Mary (also known as Polly) UNKNOWN. Like everyone
else, I too am assuming that she was John's wife and mother of his
children. Does anyone have any info that 1. proves she is in fact the wife
of John Lingar, 2. that she is the mother of Sarah, John, and James Harvey
Lingar. Unfortunately many court records of Claiborne County no longer
exist...probably lost during the Civil War.
I have never been able to find any marriage record in Tennessee. I seem to
recall seeing John & Mary Lingar listed in an index for Virginia (I might
be having one of my "senior moments"), leaving the possibility that they
were married perhaps in VA. The only info that I could find was in the
Claiborne County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions (pg. 221) Tuesday
March 18th 1828: "The court appoints Mary Lingar guardian to John Lingar
and Harvey Lingar Minor heirs of John Lingar Decd." Yes, guardianship many
times went to the mother, however that was not always the case. Assuming
that she was in fact their mother, it leaves me with the question was she
the mother of Sarah? There are quite a few years between Sarah's birth
(1809) and those of John (? 1815 or 1818) and James Harvey (1823). Were
there any other children? The gap only raises questions, doesn't prove
anything.
The only document I found indicating the relationship of Sarah Lingar to
the senior John Lingar is in the Claiborne County Deeds, Vol. R., Sept.
1842, pg 66-67, which states: "...and by these presents do bargain sell and
deliver to the said Harvey Lingar his heirs and assigns forever a certain
tract or parcel of land containing sixty seven and two thirds acres situate
lying and being in the said County of Claiborne and State of Tennessee
adjoining the lands of William Turner & John Lee it being the one third of
a tract of land sold by Wm Hord to John Lingar dec'd. containing two
hundred and three acres the said sixty seven and two thirds acres of land
decended from the said John Lingar decd to the said Sally Goodman formerly
Sally Lingar which is a part of said two hundred and three acres as above
set forth and the land is undivided and the intention of the contract and
this deed is to convey the said Sally Goodman part of the said two hundred
and three acres of land that decended to her from her father John Lingar
Decd...."
Mary was head of household on the 1830 Claiborne County federal census.
Because of the ages of the people, it looks as if Sarah, her 1st two
children (Francis M. & Elizabeth), John, James Harvey, and Mary were the
members of the household. Of course that raises the question as to where
was Sampson Goodman? Mary died before 19 June 1832 as shown in the
Claiborne Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions: (pg 532-533) "---with leave of
the court Rice W. Whiteaker is admitted to administer on all and singular
the goods and chattles rights and credits of Mary Lingar dec'd gave &
security and was qualified as the law directs."
I never found any record indicating what happened to the boys. James H.
would still have been a minor and not knowing the correct date of John's
birth, he too may have been a minor. In which case, did custody go to
Sampson & Sarah? On checking the 1840 census for John and I find a white
male between the ages of 15-20, which is likely to be James H.
Next question: Who are Father: James Merritt (#5366) and Mother: Nancy Ann
Croggins (#5302). Are they are Mary's parents? If so, then why is her last
name shown as unknown. What is the source of proof?
From info received from other researchers, Sampson & Sarah supposedly had
a son named Nathanial (Nate). This info was sent to me by a cousin Juanita
(Wise) Martin, in Stephensville, TX. I have not yet checked ths out.
Marriage of Samuel Chandler Chumley to Mary Elizabeth Goodman is 1 Feb
1863, not 1861. Cyndi Galati has copy of marriage record, and she corrected
the info I had.
Next question: I'm interested in finding out about the book: "Families of
Dallas, Lourens, Rogers - Vol. 1" by Zella Rogers Dallas & Eureatha Rogers
Lourens - compiled by John Keith Lourens 2/97. Is this book still
available, who published it & where might I obtain a copy?
Regarding the children of Thomas Kelly Goodman and Mary Elilzabeth
Greenhaw, who is Albert A.? Besides Oliver Symphronious, and Homer H.,
there was a Talmadge K.. I have a photo of Talmadge's 2 children.
Some of the children of Edwin McMasters Goodman & America (Chumley) are
missing...Addie, Charles Claude, Albert, Edith B., and Mabel Elodia. The
first three died as young children. Also, the info on the death of America
(Chumley) Goodman is incorrect...She died 11 May 1936 in Fayetteville, AR.
Not only do I have a copy of the death record, but it was obvious that she
was alive in 1916 as she was listed in the Letters of Administration
regarding her husband's estate. I believe this info is coming from the
Fulkerson papers...be aware they are full of errors, including the marriage
date of Edwin & America. They were married 19 Sept 1869 in Polk Co., MO. I
have a copy of the record which I obtained from the County Court House.
Can anyone supply me with the sources for the info on the original
message. I really would be every so grateful. I'm willing to share any info
I have.

Hi,
I'm still so new at using & understanding e-mail and the Internet, that
I'm afraid I did not understand this message. What is the CHUMBLEY-D Digest
and how do you view it? Nothing indicated an attachment except in the body
of this message. How do you access todays topics?
I would be ever so grateful if someone could walk me through this. Thanks.

Hello to all!! Does anyone know anything about a Jas M. Chumbley? He
was living in Logan Co. Illinois city of Latham August 12 1942. He is
listed as an uncle on this document I have which makes him a brother to
my grandfather Dr. Charles Andrew Chumbley from Ky. Thanks, Andy

Don't have a clue as to spouses of the children of George B. Slatten and
Elizabeth Goodman. BUT, does anyone know if or how George B. was related to
John Slatten who married Eliza Chumley Lyngar's sister, Malinda Chumley (Sept.
6, 1845)? John appears with Malinda in the 1850 Polk Co., MO census, but in
the 1860 Greene Co.MO census Melinda is shown living only with her sons
Robert, George and James and the next listing is for George and Elizabeth
Slatten living with their son William. [Where these folks lived is where
Polk, Greene, Dade and Lawrence Counties all come together.] Barbara
I have list of children of George B Slatten, b 3 January, 1831,
died 12 Feb 1911 and wife, Elizabeth Goodman, b 1829 Tennessee, died
13 August 1922, daughter of Sampson Goodman and Sarah Lyngar. They
are: William T., born 1859; Mary Margaret , born 17 November, 1860,
married 27 December, 1877 to James Coats; Tennessee, born 1863; John,
born 1866; Harriet, born 1869; and Arizona born 1870. Does anyone
have names of mates and children of these family members? JOyce
