I think you've confused the Harvey Lyngars. The Harvey Linguar who married
Elizabeth Luster in Claiborne Co. TN was a son of John and Sarah (Chumbly)
Lingar. His uncle Harve Lyngar in Missouri married for the second time Mary
Susan "Mollie" Anderson, 22 Sept 1881, in Greene Co. MO. She was mother of
Thedra Edge.
Barbara
I'm way behind. Just came to a May 12 message from Barbara saying
that Harvey Linguar married Elizabeth Luster March 12, 1871. This
would fit for James Harvey, son of John Lingar and Sarah Chumbley if
it is a second marriage. His first wife died a year or so earlier,
am I correct? I was not aware of a second marriage. Then this
second marriage would make this couple the parents of Thedra? Joyce
HI ALL!! I'M FINALLY BACK!!!! We just got our modem back! I haven't
had time to catch up on all of the messages, but I will get to it. I
still haven't had time to unpack my research yet, but my husband left
yesterday to go back to sea so I will start working on unpacking it by
the end of the week. To update on the house: We got a kitchen in with
running water (even the hot water), stove everything!! Now I guess I
have to cook? We still don't have a complete bathroom, but maybe if
the kids and I can catch up on some stuff we will see if we can do it.
We do have lights and outlets in the rooms. It was really neat to go
upstairs to get in bed last night and be able to turn on the light in
my room!! You don't realize how much the little things mean until you
have done without them! We also lucked into 15 hens! So we built a
temporary chicken house. We have collected 13 eggs so far, but should
have them coming out our ears soon! Any way I was glad to see that
there were lots of messages from you all while I was off line!! I hope
to talk to you all soon!!
Happy Hunting!

Hello,
I would like to find out if anyone on the list might have a connection to my
family. I have a lot more, but won't take the time to go into details now.
My GGG-Grandfather, William K. CHUMLEY, was born abt 1816 in TN. He married
Ruth Short b. abt 1814. They had 8 children born in TN: Elizabeth,
Pruelia, William Jackson, Daniel Richard (my GG-Grandfather), Henrietta A.,
Joshua F., James M., Lucy C. They left TN and moved to IL between 1852-55.
Their youngest child, Elisha A. was born there. I found them on the 1860
Census in Little Muddy, Franklin Co., IL. At some point he moved to Wise
Co., TX. where he is located on the 1880 Census.
My GG-Grandfather, Daniel Richard CHUMLEY b.abt 1825 married Catherine
Plumley abt 1867 in IL. They had Martha E., William Grant (my
G-Grandfather), Bernettie, Ruth A., all born in IL. They moved to Wise Co.
TX about 1875 and Daniel L. was born.
My G-Grandfather, William Grant CHUMLEY b. July 20, 1870 in Peoria Co., IL.
He married Ida Mae Drew on Jan. 3, 1892 in Denton, Wise Co., TX. They had
Flora Maude, Ruby Catherine, Vitula Vivian, Theodore Roosevelt, Foye Guy,
Louise, Howard O., and Milford.
I have a lot of information that I can share. Please contact me if any of
this looks familiar to you.
Thanks,
Cynthia Chumley
Hello Helen,
My mother was a CHUMLEY
Her father was Horace CHUMLEY who was KIA in Belgium W.W.1
1914. They lived in Kent,England. I'm trying to find out from whence
he came.
I have no idea where or who his kin were.

Thanks Barbara, I am trying to find out more on Robert. What I have is from
old information complied some years ago by a cousin (whom I have never met) I
appreciate your input and hope you will help straighten me out. Do you know
anything about the Chumbleys that left Pulaski Co and went to Texas? I do
not know where in TX, I just know that my mom's dad moved from TX to AZ?
Thanks again!!!!! Helen
Helen--
I would question the information that you relayed to Sheila. Both the 1830
and 1840 Claiborne Co., Tennessee Census show Robert Chumley residing there.
In 1850, he is in the Polk Co., Missouri Census, age 64. Also his gravestone
in the private King Cemetery in Polk Co. shows his birthdate to be 1786 and
the date of his death as January 18, 1853. We'd all like to find out from
whence the family came from England!
Barbara
Shelia,
You seem to know quite abit about Chumbley's (Chumley) they did
orriginate from England ----- I'll have to look up the county. How do you fit
in? I am descended from Robert Chumbley & Betty Ford. Robert was born 1780
in VA and moved to TN appx. 1822. I do not have any information on Betty
Ford.
How does your line run?
Helen in TN
I am a new subscriber and hope you will bear with me.
CHUMLEY is a very uncommon name from where did it originate?
The CHUMLEY I seek was in KENT, England and was KIA in Belgium,
in 1914.
Regards to all. Sheila in Australia
sheila(a)ozdocs.net.au
Since I am a new subscriber I hope you will bear with me.
CHUMLEY is not a very common name and is connected to me.
Where do they originate from?

Regarding the spelling LINGUAR--
"Claiborne Co. Tennessee Marriage Records 1838-1878, Book IV", p. 82 shows
"LINGUAR, HARVEY to Elizabeth Luster, March 12, 1871"
I think I'm right that Harvey was son to John Lingar m. Sarah Chumley.

I have received some information from a claibourne county discussion group on
the
Lingar(Lyngar) family. Most of it is information we already have except they
have a new spelling.--Linguar-- has anyone ever seen this spelling before.?

Hi,
Being out of the loop for a couple of weeks has really put me behind in
responding to many of the messages that have been posted. This messages
raises a question I have had for years, and maybe someone can answer it for
me.
So far, every researcher (and cousin) who is descended from Robert
Chumbley has the same information as to who his children are. I guess we
are all passing the info around to each other. I have spent a lot of years
collecting info from everyone else, and now that I am trying to document
this information, I'm really puzzled as to what are the source(s).. Does
anyone know the source for the children of Robert & Betsy Chumbley? Did
Robert leave a will? From what little info I was able to uncover from court
records in Tennessee, Robert Chumbley appeared to have little or no
property. I found my ancestor, John Chumbley, suing him for money Robert
apparently owed him. Robert's horse, and bed were held in trust (by ano
son, I'll have to look it up but off the top of my head I think it was
Lewis) for one year. If the loan was not paid up by then, Robert would
lose his bed and horse. Unfortunately, I was never able to find the outcome
in any court records. Robert left Tennessee in the late 1840s and was
living in Polk Co., MO with his daughter, Malinda, and her husband John
Slatton/Slatten and children. John died in 1850. I'm wondering if Robert
decided to skip out on the debt and left for MO with the Slattens. I
haven't looked for any land records or a will in Polk County as yet. Can
anyone answer this for me?
Also, I have received info over the years that John Chumbley's middle
name was Henry. I have never found one record mentioning the name Henry or
even the initial "H". Is this just info that has been handed down or does
someone know of the source?
The same goes for John Chumbley's son Samuel. So far, every record I have
seen only mentions the middle name of Chandler, but some
researchers/cousins also show Clemens. I know I have not seen every record
in existence, but I haven't found the name Clemens. In what records am I
not looking?
It's kind of funny, in that the majority of us have not been able to
prove the parents of Robert Chumbley, and yet I have received info from
other cousins that this Robert is the son of John and Elizabeth (Dickens)
Chumbley, who in turn is the son of John Chumbley and Martha Lockett. But,
no sources are ever noted. I have seen info in the DAR indexes that this
John Chumbley (husband of Martha Lockett) served in the Revolutionary War
and moved to Indiana, where he died. His will does not mention any children
as I recall.
For many years, this has been my goal to document the above info. Maybe
with all of us out there, we can eventually figure it all out. Does anyone
have any theories about this?
Happy Hunting...
Sharon Ford

I haven't been checking in--hope I haven't missed something. Wanted
to respond to joanarc's observations and questions of April 13. I
have some pages from a book written by James Owen: UNDER THE MUSHROOM
TREE. I don't know if the book is still available or not; it might
be worth having. He also refers to a book called the DOBBS AND
RELATED FAMILIES. (John Franklin Goodman married Orleana Dobbs).
Much of it deals with Dobbs which has no direct line to Chumbley and
to Lyngar only through John F. Goodman.
He traces the Goodmans from Sampson, found in 1840 census of
Claibourne Co TN. States his gravestone at Turkey Creek in Polk Co
as Octo 8, 1806 to May 15, 1883. Wife, Sarh died 9 July, 1870 and
was 60 y 9 m 7 d. He married Sarah before 1827. Should have been
in 1830 census but there was a Mary Lingear in Claiborne Co for 1830,
Theory is that her husband John was dead, that Sarah and her children
were living with Mary to help settle the estate. `No theory about
where Sampson was at that time.
Tradition says John Lyngar was Portugese, being very dark.
By 1850 they are in census for Polk Co. MO. In 1860 they are
listed again but spelled as Simpson and he is 10 years younger
instead of 10 years older. The son Henry is listed as Harry C. in
1850. In 1880 Sampson is living in Walnute Grove Twp Greene Co.,
married to Rebecca Delk He is buried at Turkey Creek Cem. , Jackson
Twp, Polk Co, next to Sarah. Pictures are enclosed of the tombstones
of Sampson, as well as John Goodman (Sep 11, 1831 to Dec. 12, 1910,
as well as pictures of these two men.
No record of marriage of John to Orleana but there is evidence they
were married in September, 11850. She was the widow of Absolum
Hurst, killed in the Mexican War and older, but they seeem to have
had a happy marriage.
Their children: Harvey Russell, Sarah E., Elizabeth V., Sampson D.
(died young), Barbra Angeline, Sallena, and George Washington
Goodman, dates and spouses given, or do you already have that
information? Gives children of Harvey, whose daughter Nellie May had
Nora Belle Lock, who preserved much of this information, now
deceased. Gives the family of George and lElizabeth and of Barbara
Angeline who married Jfames Monroe Owen.
John Franklin Goodman was an industrious farmer, a Baptist preacher
and interested in developing a perpetual motion machine. After
Orlean's death he married Mrs. Mary Neff in 1892. There is a death
certificate, #1206, due to senility, address Walnut Grove.
Does this answer some of the questions of the group?
Joyce
My name is Jim Chumney, currently of Phoenix, Arizona. I've traced my
Chumney family heritage back to North Carolina in 1793 as follows:
Father: Clyde Chumney (Born in Houston Co., Alabama, Nov. 9, 1923)
Grandfather: Andrew Bagget Chumney (Born in Houston Co., Alabama, June
7, 1900)
GGrandfather: John A. Chumney (Born in Henry Co., Alabama, Aug/Sept
1859)
GGGrandfather: James C. Chumney (Born in Henry Co., Alabama, 1833)
GGGGrandfather: John A. Chumney (Born in North Carolina in 1793) Moved
to southeastern Alabama circa 1820.
I can't find any concrete information on my GGGGrandfather John A.
Chumney's parents. I have a hunch they were John Chumney and Elizabeth
Andrews who married in Rowan County, North Carolina on December 13,
1787, but John Chumney doesn't show up in the 1800 or 1810 US Census for
North Carolina, and none of the other Chumney's in North Carolina during
that era seem to be the right age or have the correct number of
children. Any shred of evidence would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Jim Chumney
