Joan,
Hi!! I am sending this to the list because I can't come up with your
address right now. I thought I had added it to my address book, but it
is not there <grin>. I wanted you to know that I received the
information you snail mailed! I really enjoyed looking through it and
am looking forward to getting moved so I can unpack my research. We
have spent almost a month packed and thinking we were going to move at
anytime! It looks like it will be Monday before we can close now! I
certainly hope so because the papers all expire on Tuesday. Even then
it will take quite a while to get the research unpacked, but I am
keeping it all together. I really enjoyed the pictures!! I got some
pictures of "Lon" from Sharon also. He must have been one of the
photogenic ones in the family! <grin> Actually I have a brother that
died in 1984 that looked a lot like him! I don't know if they were
Jewish or not. It is certainly a possibility! I had always heard that
my Chumbley's were American Indian, but Jewish is definitely another
possibility! Talk to you soon!
Cyndi
Dear 'cousins',
I'm brand new to the list so please bear with me as I milk all of you for what
you know! First a bit of my background. I am descended from Eliza Chumley
and James Harvey (Harve) Lyngar, through their son Andrew Chumley Lyngar, his
son Walter Noble Lyngar, his daughter Sarah Adeline Lyngar Jennings, her
daughter and my mother Frances Lee Jennings Berry. I've been doing family
research since the 1960's, but have only recently gotten serious now that I
can keep track of everything on the computer and have a bit more time to do
what I really like to do now that one child is in college (Boston University)
and the 16-year-old has a driver's license. I'm lucky to live near
Washington, D.C. (my husband is a physicist at a government lab) and am able
to get there regularly to do research. Oh yes, in real life I do designs for
needlework (English smocking) and travel around the country teaching classes
plus write a regular feature for a national needlework magazine.
Right now I would like to know anything about Robert Chumley's parents and
grandparents, etc. I visited the little King Cemetery where he is buried back
in the '70's, which was the first time anyone in my part of the family knew
about him.
I hope that I can share what I know about the Lyngar's. Does anyone know
anything about John Lingar who married Sarah Chumbley in Claiborne Co., TN,
February 13, 1838? We think John may be Harve's brother, but don't know.
Thank you in advance,
Barbara Meger
Hi, All!! I am still here although I have all research packed up
waiting to move (STILL!!). Barbara sent me this message earlier and I
thought I'd forward it to all of you.
Good Luck,
Cyndi

Please check out the Chumbley / Chumney / Chumley Genealogy

I am trying to figure out how we are all related. If you have any info
that can add pieces to the puzzle, please let me know and I will include
it on the Webpages.
Genealogy yours,
Eddie Chumney
Hello everyone. Still trying to sort out all the information I've been
getting.
I think that exchanging FGS is a good idea. I just started this genealogy
thing
in May and I'm still learning. I can use all the help I can get. I know
that my
great-grandmother was Cornelia Cadle Lingar (married to James Dudley Lingar)
and
that she died very young with young children at home? Does anyone know what
she died from? Jenny
I have copies of Greene co. census, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 2
volumes of 1880 and 2 of 1900, though that does not include
Springfield, only northern townships. Joyce
Hi all,
Must have deleted the message with the question regarding the discrepancy
on the birth of Florence. As I recall, the date of May 1868 came from the
FGS of researcher Juanita Martin, but years ago when I looked at the 1870
Census (which was taken on 18 July 1870) it stated 10/12 yrs of age, which
would put her birth sometime in September. I'm certain that the info
e-mailed to me, was misread as Oct. of 1869 instead of 10 months of age. I
mentioned that we would need to check the 1900 Census, because it lists
month & year of birth. Well, I went to the library yesterday, and was
unable to locate her in the 1900 Census. I looked at the 1910 Census for
Missouri, Greene County (T624 R782) Ed 26, Sheet 12A (pg 92, lines 37-45)
visitation #277, which was taken on 27 April 1910. Her husband, William C.
Gray was head of household, and she was shown as 40 yrs of age, so she
would have turned 41 that year, again verifying that she was born in 1869.
It also showed that this was her 2nd marriage, his 1st, and they had been
married for 13 yrs at the time the census was taken. Therefore she was
obviously a Gray at the time of the 1900 Census. I looked in the 1900
Soundex for Missouri under William C. Gray, Florence Gray, and Edith Zinn
(her daughter by 1st husband Abe Zinn). Could not find anything. It's not
unusual for families or individuals to not be in the soundex or even the
census. If the original pages to the census are illegible, they won't be in
the Soundex; and many times for whatever reason the families/individuals
are just not in there because they moved, or were missed by the census
taker. And then, the little old WPA lady that was soundexing that
particular page may have just accidently deleted them. Who knows...we need
to check her death record and also for an obit.
For the record the 1910 Census for William C Gray (head of household)
shows the following:

Hi all,
I would like to exchange family group sheets with members on this list.
Having been supervisor at the LA-FHC for a couple years, teaching and
attending genealogy classes, and attending meetings & workshops, I have
been very fortunate to be associated with a number of noted
genealogists/lecturers who are known in genealogy circles in the UK and US.
One of my friends did the research for Alex Haley for Roots and also
Queens. So, I have used their expertise when I run into a stumbling block.
Besides, the collection of books, films, fiche at the LA-FHC is 2nd to Salt
Lake. I would like to analyze the FGSs from everyone so we can establish a
plan of attack...not duplicating work done by others which obviously wastes
a lot of time, exchanging/identifying photos of people, locations
(cemeteries, farms, etc), and utilizing the research facilities in each of
our areas of residence.
Also, I am journal editor for the quarterly of the British Isles Family
History Society - USA (BIFHS-USA) which also has a super website:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~bifhsusa
On this website there are a number of links to the British Isles. We
exchange journals with over 30 other societies right now, and the list is
expanding. We will be establishing our members "interest lists" on the site
soon, so I will see to it that the Chumley/Chumbley surname will be on the
list. Between queries in our journal and the surname interest lists,
hopefully we will attract the attention of other researchers in the UK.
Anyway, let me know what you think about exchanging FGS.
Sharon
Hi all...
I think it would be a good idea (for those of us already on this list) to
limit each message to one surname when asking or answering questions. I
naturally don't know how everyone has their files set up, but surnames is
one of three categories in my files. Under the "Surname" category my files
are set up in separate folders, first as family groups within that surname,
then misc. (those whose relationship have not been determined), general or
misc. data pertaining to the the surname, and correspondence.
You can't imagine the mess I had when I was trying to answer one message
that had Lingar and Goodman's on it!!! I had everything pulled for both
surnames for a couple of days or so while I was trying to solve the
questions. It was rather difficult trying to keep the files from getting
mixed up.
Anyhoo, it's just a suggestion...but it would really be a big help to me.
Let me know what you think!!!

What
> is the source for the children's names and birth dates?
#1. The source of the children's names and birth dates came from other
researchers' FGS. So we are going to have to document this data.
> 2) On James Harvey (married Elizabeth Chumley) Lingar's Family Sheet-
> He is listed as a child of the above John and Mary on their sheet,
but
> on his sheet it lists John and Sarah (Sallie) Chumbley Lingar as his

> sheet) father is listed as born in 1815 and James is listed as born

#2. James Harvey (who according to family stories was referred to as
"James Harve" or "Harve") was married 1st to Eliza Chumbley & @nd to
Mary
S. Anderson. His brother John (called "Jack") was married to Sarah
(Sallie)
Chumbley.
The years of birth for both James Harvey and Jack are very
questionable.
Again they came from other researchers' FGS. I have always been puzzled
by
the number of years between, Sarah, Jack and James Harvey. There is
quite a
spread of years...6 yrs or there about between Sarah & Jack, & 12-14
yrs
between Sarah & James Harvey. If Mary/Polly is the mother of all three,
I
would suspect other births of children who did not survive. I even have
some reservations about Mary even being the mother of Sarah, however,
it is
certainly possible. Have you seen the 1830 Census for Claiborne Co.,
TN?
Mary Lingear is head of household and there is 1 white male under 5
yrs, 1
white male bet 5-10 yrs, 1 white male 10-15 yrs, 1 white female under
age
5, 1 white female bet 20-30 yrs, and 1 white female bet 40-50. My gut
feeling is the male under 5 is Francis M. Goodman, the male bet 5 -10
is
James Harvey Lingar, the male between 10-15 is Jack Lingar, the girl
under
5 is Elizabeth Goodman, the woman bet 20-30 is Sarah Goodman & of
course
the woman bet 40-50 is Mary Lingar. I just have never figured out where
Sampson was at this time. The recent info we received from Jo Curry
supports the age bracket for the first two children of Sampson and
Sarah.
> 3)On Louis Franklin Chumley born 12/15/1882- Where does he fit in? I
> can't read something that was written across the top.
#3. The note at the top of the FGS for Louis Franklin Chumley b 12 Dec
1882 reads: 74-78 yr. gap frm Louis Franklin Chumley, s of Robert
Chumley &
Elizabeth Betsy Ford. Is this desc frm Daniel Huff Chumley s of Louis
Franklin Chumley? I took this info from a book, and at the moment I
can't
find the papers. I don't know if the person who wrote the book came up
with
this info or if it was submitted by Arva Chumley, wife of Ray Darwood
Chumley.

Jenny,
Hi! I know my Chumbley line was around Polk County, MO, but I have
seen records for them in Greene and St. Claire County also.
Good Luck,
Cyndi

Sharon,
Hi!! OK I am ready with some more questions!
1) On John (married Mary/Polly) Lingar/Lyngar family group sheet- What
is the source for the children's names and birth dates?
2) On James Harvey (married Elizabeth Chumley) Lingar's Family Sheet-
He is listed as a child of the above John and Mary on their sheet, but
on his sheet it lists John and Sarah (Sallie) Chumbley Lingar as his
parents. John (married Sarah) is listed on John (married Mary/Polly)
as James Harvey's brother. Could these two John's have gotten mixed
somewhere and it should really be the above John who is both of their
father? Also the John listed as James Harvey's (on his family group
sheet) father is listed as born in 1815 and James is listed as born in
1821-1823 so his father would have been 6-8 when he was born.
3)On Louis Franklin Chumley born 12/15/1882- Where does he fit in? I
can't read something that was written across the top.
That's all for now. I am still working on it, but trying to keep these
questions coming as they come to me. It is so much easier working this
way because we can write them as they come up! Talk to you soon!
Cyndi
Hi to everyone. Just to let you know my last name is not Lingar; it is
Sollars.
My mother, however, was a Lingar before she was married. So far, I have found
two
Chumbley ancestors. One is Sarah Chumbley, born between 1819 and 1823,
married John Lingar, born between 1815 and 1819. I think she is the daughter
of
Robert Chumbley and Betty Ford. The other is a sister to Sarah. Eliza
Chumbley
who married James Harvey Lingar. Jenny
I guess it's time I got into this act. My interest is in the family

1829 in Wilson Tenn. Children: Francis M. Goodman, born 1827
Tennessee, ,died 1888; Elizabeth, b. 1829 Tenn. cied 13 August, 1922
in Polk, MO; John Franklin, b. 11 Sept 1831 Wilson Tenn., died 12
December, 1910, Walnut Grove MO; James , b 1833 Tenn; Newton J., born
1843 Tenn; Mary Elizabeth, bo 12 April, 1844 in Missouri, died 14
December, 1911, Republic MO; Harvey C. b 30 Sept. 1847,died 30 April,
1889; Thomas Kelly, b March, 1849, died 28 Dec. 1899 in Arkansas;
Edwin Goodman, b 1853 MO, died 1916 in MO. Of these Mary Elizabeth
married Samuel CHUMBLEY and Edwin married America Chumley. My
granddaughter's branch is that of John Franklin Goodman who married
Orlina DOBBS. JOyce
