Hi, All!! I got this from Sharon Ford this morning and wanted to
forward this information to all of you. Feel free to join in the
discussion with information you all might have at any time!! Also on
Fact #3 I have a copy of a transcribed obit from the Republic Monitor
12/21/1911:
Died, Mrs. S. C. Chumbley
Mary E. Goodman was born Polk County, MO Apr. 12, 1844, Married Feb. 1,
1863 to Samuel C. Chumbley. Had 12 children. 11 survive. Present at
funeral were Al Chumbley of Republic, Ben of Joplin, Lon of Aurora,
Ernest of Pierce City, Victor of Aurora, Clint of Aurora, Mrs. Haley
(note by Cyndi Galati- this is my line) of Duneweg, MO, Mrs. Gray of
Crighton, MO, Mrs. Savage of Sigourney, IA, and Mrs. Effie Thurman of
Republic. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
The above is where I had originally gotten the information on Mary
Goodman's birth. I know that obits are like death certificates
notoriously wrong, but so many things point to that being her place of
birth that I find it very likely.

Eddie,
I am posting this to the list. My information came from Sharon Ford.
She has documentation listed, but I am not able to tell exactly which
documentation supports which facts. Now that Sharon is with us I will
let her answer this question. Sharon??

Hi, All!! I am going to send this to the list so that maybe someone
else can connect to it! Jenny and Joyce - Sharon Ford has joined us on
the list!! She is up and running on the internet. I am going to ask
you all to please send information to the list when contacting each
other so maybe we can all connect up!! Pleaseeeee!!!!! :-) For all
of you who don't know Sharon Ford has been doing research for a
verrrrry long time and does a wonderful job of documenting sources,
etc... When I first got started I got Soooo Lucky in finding her and
finding out that we connect in two lines. I realize that for some of
you only the Chumbley +++ parts will be pertinent, but the Goodmans and
Lyngars married into this family so much that I feel it is appropriate
to discuss all of these families!! Please feel free to jump in at any
time!! Eddie remember the questions you were asking me about some of
the stuff I had sent you now we can all go to the source because all of
what I have on the older parts of the family came from Sharon!! I am
so glad she has joined us because I think if we can all get going here
we can put his together! Any way here goes with some questions I have
on some research I received from Sharon:
1) On John Chumbley's (born c. 1809) Samuel Chandler Chumbley's
marriage year should be 1863 - I have a copy of the certificate.
2) What is source #12 for John Chumbley's (born c. 1809) family sheet?
3) On Samuel C. Chumbley's family sheet I have Mary Elizabeth GOODMAN
born in Polk County, Missouri. Since that is where her parents show up
on the Census & die I am pretty sure that is correct.
4) On Samuel C. CHUMBLEY's sheet it shows his mother (Malinda SHARP)
died in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri, but on her husbands (John
b: c. 1809) sheet it shows Missouri or Arkansas did you find proof?
5) Also on Samuel CHUMBLEY's sheet it shows Florence May b:5/4/1868 or
9/1869. The Polk County Census (someone else looked at it) for 1870
shows 10/1869.
6) On Andrew CHUMBLEY's sheet Leander is listed on the page with
Elizabeth CADLE's children, but I think it is more likely that he is
Mary GOODIN's child. Elizabeth would have been 57 when he was born and
the child before him was born 17 years earlier. I think it is more
likely that Mary is his mother and he was her first child with Andrew.
It lists her as born in 10/1828 which means she would have been 33 when
Leander was born which is unusual for that time period, but not as
unusual as 57. She would have been 37 when Lewis was born and 39 when
Wiley was born.
7) On Lewis CHUMBLEY's 2nd page Matilda (Daniel's wife) is listed as
being born on February 29, 1837 but it was not a leap year.
8)What is source #7 on Charles Ballard CHUMLEY's and John Wesley
CHUMLEY's sheets?
OK this is a start!! Did I give you enough to work on? :-) Any of
the rest of you want to join in?

James Chumbley and Lucretia are listed in the 1860 TN Census. Here
is the info provided:
James 72
Lucretia 68
William 12
They were living in Maury Co, TN.
John Chumbly 34
Virginia Chumbly 27
Martha L 3 years
John F 8 months
1850 TN Census
John Chumley 26 born in Va
Virginia Chumley 19 born in Ky
Henry 5 months
They were living in Maury Co. TN.
At my Chumney/Chumley/Chumbley Web site located at:
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/2175/chumney.html
I give info that James Chumbley fought in the war of 1812 and
received a pension. In the pension application, he says that
he married Patsy Adams on Oct 10, 1810. He served in Andrew Baker's
VA military. He says that he lived in Maury County, TN.
In the 1860 TN Census, James gives his age as 72. This means that
he was born around 1788. So, he would have been around 24 when the
war of 1812 started. James is listed as living in Prince Edward County,
VA in the 1810 VA census. In the book, "Marriage Bonds and Ministers
Returns of Prince Edward County, VA (1754-1810) by Catherine Knorr,
it gives the marriage of James Chumley to Martha Adams, who is the
daughter of Robin Adams, deceased. Sur. John Chumley, the marriage
took place on 16-OCT-1809.
In the same book, John Chumley married Palenthia Adams on
February 5, 1806. Palenthia is the daughter of Robin Adams, deceased.
Sur. William T. Walker. This marriage took place in Prince Edward
County, VA.
James Chumbley (Chumley) and John Chumley seem to be brothers
and they seemed to have married two sisters from the Robin Adams
family. James and John are both listed in the 1810 VA Census living
in Prince Edward County. According to the 1860 TN Census, James was
born in 1788. James and John seem to be the sons of John Chumley
and Elizabeth Dickens who were married on 13-APR-1783 in Prince
Edward County, Va. In this marriage, Benjamin Lockettt certifies
that Martha Chumley consents for her son, John.
John Chumley was married to Martha. John died in 1782 in Amelia
County, VA. John and Martha Chumley are my ggggg-grandparents. My
name in Eddie Chumney. John left a Will. In the Will, he lists his
children as being John, Robert (my ggggg-grandfather), Francis, Martha
and Anna. Benjamin Lockett is listed as being the Executor of the
Estate.
Sarah Chumley married James Adams, 27-MAR-1807. Sarah is the
daughter of John Chumley. Sur. James Ewing Jr. James is the son of
Robert (Robin?) Adams.
Summation:
John and Martha Chumley had the following children according
to the Will of John Chumley. (John, Robert, Francis, Martha and Anna).
John married Elizabeth Dickens in 1783. They had at least
three children: (James, John and Sarah) who all married into the same
Adams family. James and John are listed in the 1810 VA Census in
Prince Edward County, Va. The other head of household listed in the
1810 VA Census is Robert Chumley (the son of John and Martha). James
fought in the war of 1812 and married Patsy Adams. James moved to
Maury Co, TN. James had a son named John Chumbly who married Virginia
who lived in Anderson County, TN and whose family background is listed
in the post above. I hope that this all makes sense.

Hi, All!! I am going to post some more information for you all now.
You will have to excuse me as this is a very busy time for me!! We
just got approved to buy an old Victorian house that was in the process
of refinishing. We close in 12 days and then have 2 weeks to get
outlets, kitchen and some other basics in before we move! If you don't
hear from me from a day or two I am still here just trying to spin too
many plates! Any way here I go:
This is from the History of TN-Anderson County:
John Chumbley, superintendent of the Knoxville Iron Company, at Coal
Creek, Anderson Co., Tenn., was born in Nottaway County, Va., July
29,1824. He is the son of James and Lucretia (Pully) Chumbley. Both
parents were natives of Virginia; the father was of Dutch descent, and
the mother of Irish. Mr. Chumbley was raised on a farm, and was
educated in country schools. When about 13 years old he removed with
his parents to Maury County, Tenn. February 15, 1849, he married Miss
Virginia E. Davis, daughter of John Davis, of Kentucky. Two sons and
four daughters blessed the marriage. Only one son and one daughter are
now (1887) living. They are John F. Chumbley (traveling salesman for
John Wannamaker & Co., of Philadelphia, Penn.), and Lilia Brandau (wife
of Alex. L. Brandau, clothing merchant, of Knoxville). In 1854 our
subject removed from Columbia, Maury Co., Tenn., to Nashville, and
entered the employ of Housten, Campbell & Co., wholesale grocers. He
quit their employ in 1858, and was elected city marshal of Nashville,
in which capacity he served for three years, suspending the service at
the outbreak of the civil war until its close, when he was re-elected.
He served as city marshal until 1868, when he was appointed warden and
agent of the Tennessee Penitentiary. He served in this capacity nearly
four years, and since then has been superintendent of various public
works and private companies. At present he is the superintendent at
the branch prison in Anderson County. He commenced business pursuits
without capital, and his efforts have been crowned with success. He is
not a politician, but, in the political canvass, lends his influence to
the Republican party.
I hope this helps one of you!
Good Luck,
Cyndi
I know a lot of the Chumbley researchers that I have talked to have
said there were rumors in their families about Native American
heritage. There is in mine also although I have found written hints on
another line I haven't found anything on this line, but I did find
Chumbleys on the Dawes Rolls. Maybe one of these fits with your
families. They are all one case so should be one family!

Hi, All!! Welcome!! Well our first day is here and we are seeing a
response. I thought I'd send you all a message to welcome you and suggest
that it might help if we send a message to the list:
CHUMBLEY-L(a)rootsweb.com
and introduce ourselves and tell a little about the Chumbley's in our
lives!
I am Cyndi Galati the list owner. At times I get caught up on research and
at times I fall behind, but if you are patient usually yield good things!
We are in the process of buying a house so our lives are usually pretty
hectic! Now a little about my Chumbleys:

Pat,
Welcome!! You are our first subscriber!! Thank YOU!! Just be patient
with us and we should have quite a few more subscribers in the next week.
Once we all get on line we can start sending our family information and
hopefully "Climb A Lot Of Mountains". I have had sick kids and then a sick
computer so while I am still a little behind I am catching up! I have
saved the e-mail you sent me a while back and would love to post it to this
list after we get more people on and then answer it also. Is that all
right with you?
Hope to Hear From You Soon,
Cyndi
