I am connected to Chumley family through Claiborn Chumley born in
Virginia who married Julia ? born in Tennessee. They were listed in
1850 Obion County Tennessee census. They had four children listed,
William 9 years old, Sarah 8, Ann 6 and Priscilla, 5.
William Henry Chumley is my great great grandfather. He married Martha
J. Mattie" Teter in Tennessee and their daughter Mollie Irene is my
great grandmother.
I have birth, death, and marriage dates as follow;
Claiborn born abt 1811
William born abt 1841/42 married November 28, 1865 in Obion Co, TN to
Martha Teter
Mollie Irene Chumley born September 9, 1867 in Obion Co, TN married
August 1887/88 in Arkansas to Albert Sidney Reed, died October 14, 1951
in McIntosh Co, Eufaula, Oklahoma
Would like to here from any Chumley researchers with information on
these Chumley's or who are connected to these.
Thanks
Johnnie Truelove
Eddie,
We connect at John F. who married Martha Ann SMITH. They are my great

Yes, we are cousins. I will try to post. I haven't yet as my printer is
down. I haven't figured how to get info out of PAF and transferred to you.
I am a visual person, but I'll figure a way.

Cyndi,
You might want to check with the City of Pasadena, or possibly LA County
for a business license. Don't know records back that far still exist, but
it's worth a try. I'll ask around to see what I can find out.
Also, LA Public Library has a large collection of city directories. This
is another place I need to go, because of this class I'm taking at the
LAFHC, but, again, it won't be until next year. Remind me in January and
I'll make an attempt to schedule a trip downtown. At least we would then
have the address of the business, and could then see if records existed as
to who owned the actual building. This was during the depression, so more
than likely they just rented. Certainly doesn't hurt to look into it.

Cyndi,
How great to have all those letters that your mom wrote. It's a real
treasure, and hopefully you will never get rid of them.
Love the little poem. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Cyndi,
You were correct in the first message. To inter-library loan microfilm on
newspapers, you should probably contact the California State Library in
Sacramento. I know the Sutro library in San Francisco has a newspaper
collection this library also does inter-library loans. I'm trying to get
ready tonight to go out of town for the next few days, so remind me Monday
or Tuesday to send you the addresses if you are interested. Several
universities in the state also have newspaper collections, but do not know
if they inter-library loan. The library at UCLA has a large collection, but
I find that library so difficult to use. It's so large and so busy and you
never seem to find any one who can take a moment to help you. The catalog
is on the computer and the system is very intimidating to a computer dummy
like myself. I waste more time there. Cal State at Northridge has a great
newspaper collection, but I don't remember any Pasadena newspapers. Haven't
been back there since the library was totally destroyed in the 1994
earthquake. Believe it or not, I was there on Friday and the following
Monday it was destroyed in the quake. I don't know if any of the newspaper
collection was destroyed, but the microfilm and readers were in the
basement of the building and hopefully survived intact if a pipe didn't
burst. In a lot of places records were destroyed by water damage from
bursting pipes.
I understand that the Pasadena Public [or City] Library is supposed to have
the Pasadena newspapers, I believe on microfilm, but you won't be able to
get them to look up an obit for you. I have always had it on my "to do"
list, but have never made it over there. I should try to do this as there
are a number of people I want to see if they were mentioned in the paper
[including myself] but it definitely won't be until next year now that the
holidays are upon us. I think there were only a couple of Pasadena papers
[one was the Pasadena Star News]. You might possible get an obit from the
newspaper office itself, unless they have gone defunct or turned the older
newspaper collection over to the library. I could be wrong, but I think the
Pasadena Star News went out of business, and I don't know if it was bought
up by another newspaper. I'll see what I can find out. I'll need you to
remind me, Okay!

Cyndi...Another Condray-Chumley connection--David Chumley married Eliza
Condray in Claiborne Co. TN. They are listed living with her family in the

Richard,
Does Retha still live here in Southern California? It has been years since
I've been in touch with her. She had remarried at the time I contacted her,
and I've since forgotten her name. Would it be possible to get her address
and telephone number?

Hi, All! This is the info I got from a look up request for the 1900
Census for Samuel Chumbley. The Joplin Library does not have a
Soundex for that Census so I asked for a lookup in Greene County to
make sure he was listed before I spent time looking. I'll try to
convince my husband to try and drop by the library on Tuesday for the
record! I notice he is listed as a Barrel Trimmer! This is the
first time he is listed with a job that fits something we know he was
doing!

Richard,
Thank You! I will send to Los Angeles County and see if they have a
Probate Record on him! When we get a chance we might also want to
check and see if they have anything in the paper. I'll add that to a
Microfilm list. I'll have to check and see if I can order film for
Sacramento newspapers for that time period. I know I won't be able
to do it until after New Year's, but I put it on a microfilm list. I
will go ahead and send to see if there is a Probate packet. It took
so long to get the Death Cert that I figure it will take forever for
the Probate so I want to get it off right away!

I have a book, Kentucky Town and Its Baptist Church by Joe W.
Chumbley. The
inside cover says:
Joe Chumbley and wife, Juanita (Skipworth) Chumbley. Son of the late
Robert
and Sallie Jordan Chumbley. Joe is the brother of Relda, John Miles,
David
and Jim. The index has Chumbley:
Cleophas 1880-1943 moved to Tx when 12 yrs. Born at Naomi, Kent
about
fifteen miles southwest of Somerset in Pulaske County. He was the
son of
John P and Marinda Trimble Chumbley
There are many Chumbleys in this book. One was Caleb, who became
state
champion checker player at age 19.Can I help anyone? There are
families
and names, none earlier than the ones mentioned, tho. Nell

Hi, All! I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! We spent part of
the day going through some stuff of my mom's that I got last year
just before we moved and had never gotten a chance to go through! It
was a wonderful way to spend the holiday!! She died when I was 5 and
I don't really remember her. I was cut off from her family when my
father remarried. I have traced them down, but you just don't have
quite the same bond as you do when you are raised together. Part of
what was in the box was letters she wrote from 1963-1969. It is
really neat reading and helps me to understand her a lot more! I set
them aside to read after the holidays! There are more than 200 of
them! It makes it hard to throw anything out because some of those
things that we don't think of at the time can mean so much in the
future! Any way one of the things I found was something written in
her hand. I don't know if she wrote it or copied it, but it is neat
for this time of the year as we think of days gone by!
The Changing Ways
A thousand years ago today,
A wilderness was here.
A man with powder in his gun-
Went out to hunt a bear.
Times now have change, somewhat.
And today, there's a different plan.
A woman with powder on her nose-
Goes out to hunt a man.
I just thought this was a cute poem! Enjoy!
God Bless,
Cyndi
