Hi All: Have been a member for sometime now. I know this goes back
quite a bit, but did I see a message in here about the grave of Robert
Chumbley (married Betsy Ford) in Polk Co., MO. Did someone have
pictures of this grave. If so, could I get copies of those pictures. A
cousin of mine went to the cemetery and took pictures; and after getting
into poison ivy and other mishaps, his pictures did not turn out at all.
Would appreciate any help anyone can give me. Be glad to reimburse any
costs.
Thanks, Mary Held
Dear Cindy,
I do I do....want a copy of the map of grgrandfather Sampson's land.
Thank you so much for your good hard work on the behalf of so many of

Hi, All! I just received a corner of a Polk County Plat Map by
e-mail. It is the SW corner of the county. It is the area that
Sampson Goodman had his land. I am sure that some of our other
relatives from that area, that we have land records on, are also in
that area. I have been waiting on getting Samuel Chumbley's land
record from Polk County until I go up there next time, but now I may
just have to order it because I would really like to find him on the
map! If anyone wants me to privately e-mail them a copy of the map
please let me know! As long as you can accept attachments you can
receive this and then you can print all of the copies you want!
Good Luck and God Bless,

Joan,
Hi! I have an envelope ready and next time I get a chance to make
copies I will send you copies of the 3 land files I found. If there
is ever any record I mention that you would like please just let me
know and I will copy it and send it out! I would like to receive
copies of any records you receive also. Even if they don't pertain
directly to my line I also keep information on the other branches
that I can then share with people on those lines when I find them.
There is no reason for all of us to pay to order records if one of us
already has copies. One thing I am trying to avoid is duplicating
leg work! Thank You for the prayers for Matthew! The doctor was
pretty encouraging on Monday. He ran some more tests and we will go
in for a complete body scan next Tuesday and then hopefully we will
know something!

Hi, All! Below is a message from the Polk County List. I wonder if
this could be when and why Sampson Goodman moved to TN. If he did
since we still haven't found him before then. Some of the other
people we have been dealing with may also have been affected by this
outbreak.

Cyndi--
In regard to why Sampson's land was listed as Greene Co. rather than Polk---
County boundaries changed during this time period as more settlers came into
the area. I'm not familiar with Polk Co.'s history, but I know that what is
now Lawrence Co., which adjoins at a corner, was part of Greene Co., then part
of Barry and Dade Cos. before becoming its own county in 1845. I suspect
something similar with Polk Co.
Barbara M.
Hi, All! I just received Sampson Goodman's last land file from the
National Archives. I have sent Sharon copies of the three of these.
If any of the rest of you need copies just let me know! This one is
a little more than the first two I received. I am going to just post
excerpts and things I noticed about the file:
Below are the records. Can any of you shed more light on some of the
following questions about this land file?
1) Why Greene County? Could it just be that the county lines changed
around his farm not that he kept moving?
2) The second record says Polk County. Could part of the farm be in
Polk County and part in Greene County?
3) The second record also has "his mark" which I find odd since I had
noticed that he signed other records. There is an even earlier
record in which it says "her mark" next to Sarah Lyngar Goodman's
signature, but doesn't next to Sampson's!
Any way enjoy more records!!
Good Luck and God Bless,

Helen,
In all my rambling the one thing I forgot to mention is, that by filing
each couple in a separate folder, when another researcher contacts you or
posts a message regarding a particular individual or couple, you can go
right to their folder. I keep a copy of the FGS in each folder, so if you
were looking for info on someone as a child (like school records, poorhouse
records, census)
you would pull the parents folder. Parent's folder also if that individual
didn't marry, or married and didn't have children. But as a married person,
with children, you would then pull his/her own FGS.

Helen,
There was a time that I thought I had my records somewhat "straight,
organized and knew where I was." That was before I became a subscriber to
the Chumbley List. Soooo much has been posted in such a short time that I'm
really disorganized now, and half the time I can't find what I'm looking
for, because I keep pulling records because of the messages. So much is out
of file now, therefore the disorganization. So don't feel you are alone.
I haven't really spent any time setting up my filles in the computer,
because until now, I had not found any program that recorded the notes as
I wanted. I have around a thousand names in PAF, but never entered all I
had because I found the system too complicated and just didn't suit my
needs. A fellow researcher on one of my collateral lines (found him on the
Lawrence Co., MO List) sent me a lot of his computerized material and I
loved the way it was organized, especially the notes. So, I can't be of any
help regarding setting your records up in the computer. I
can tell you how my paper files are set up now (after many changes over
the years) , but what works for one person may not work for another. You
might find that organization variations of several researchers may work
for you. With variations to suit my needs, I basically used the
organization style of a professional genealogist (Nancy Ellen Carlberg) who
did all the research for Alex Haley for his book "Queen." She has written
30 some books and one of them is "Nancy's Easy Filing System." She is the
person in charge of acquisitions at the LAFHC, and, is also currently a
board member of the British Isles Family History Society-USA. We went to
Salt Lake together (the one and only time I went to the FHL) and was a big
help to me. I will try to post a description of her system, but it might
be better if you give me your mailing address and I could send you some
pages out of her book. I don't remember the price of her book, but I think
it was under $10.
Not knowing what equipment you have, I'll list everything. So please don't
take offense if I get too basic. Remember, my ancestors came from Missouri,
the "Show me State." :-)
You'll need a filing cabinet (preferrably legal size) or box, lots of file
folders, and family group sheets (FGS).
My files are set up as follows:
1. You'll need one file folder for each SURNAME ( e.g. Chumbley, Lockett,
Dickens, Ford, etc.) you have on your pedigree chart, for collecting
general info for that same surname in one or two areas, when you don't know
how it fits into your family tree. When you do know that it fits, it goes
into the next type of folder. If you have a lot of material for a
particular time frame for the same surname then file as:
Chumley,-------1750.
2. Then you'll need a file folder for every couple on your pedigree
chart and on every FGS e.g. Chumley, John
Lockett, Martha
Chumley, John
Dickens, Elizabeth
Chumbley, John (1809)
Sharp, Malinda/Matilda
When you find information about a particular couple, put it in their
folder. This also includes children and other spouses. If there were
children by others spouses or others to which they were not married then
that info would go in separate folders set up under that couples name. For
example:
Chumbley, John
Sharp, Malinda/Matilda (she had a 2nd marriage to Joseph Souther, but no
children by him). This info would be filed in the Chumbley, John & Sharp,
Malinda folder. If she had children with Joseph Souther, then a file would
have been set up for:
Souther, Joseph
Sharp, Malinda/Matilda (or Chumbley {Sharp}, Malinda/Matilda
The birth(s), and all information of the children are filed in the parents
folder. Once the child marries and HAS A CHILD then a new folder is created
for that couple. Keep all info, documents, etc. filed by each family as a
couple. When I come across land records or court between brothers, or
fathers & adult sons/daughters, etc., then I xerox a copy for each file.
For example, recently I posted a message in regards to a court case
involving Robert Chumbley, his son John Chumbley (the one that married
Betsy Ford) and Lewis Chumbley (ano son of Robert and bro to John). In a
case such as this, I made 3 copies and 1 copy went into the folder of
Chumbley, Robert & Ford, Betsy; 1 copy went into the folder of Chumbley,
John & Sharp, Malinda/Matilda; and 1 copy went in the folder of Chumbley,
Lewis/Louis & Freeman, Mary Elizabeth. When you find a will for a
particular individual/couple, staple it to the back of the FGS. This way
you won't have to keep going thru all the records in the envelope, when you
are looking for the will.
I keep the folders filed in alphabetical order, by family groups. In other
words the folder of John & Martha Chumley are followed by the folders of
all their children and grandchildren, and the folder of John & Elizabeth
(Dickens) Chumley are followed by the folders of all their children and
grandchildren, etc. Now that so much info has been posted on the list and
so many given names have been repeated generation after generation, and
even within the same generation, plus all the collateral lines I can no
longer remember who belongs to whom, and it is creating a BIG problem.
Before I went on vacation in September, I printed out every message on the
list (I definitely don't recommend this for everyone...too much paper) that
posted info on the various Chumley families, and have continued to do so
since. I am doing this ONLY so I can sort out all this info and put it on
FGS. Once I get a genealogical program, to my liking, installed in my
computer, I will enter the info there, with the sources and not have to
keep all the messages.
So, this month I organized a three ring binder to hold DUPLICATE of all
the Chumbley/Chumley/Chumney FGS. They are in ALPHABETICAL ORDER by
"given" name. All Chumley/Chumbley/Chumney born women (no matter what their
married surname is) are filed in alphabetical order AS IF they were a
Chumley. In other words, Alcienia Elizabeth Chumbley, as an adult, is on
her husband's (Herbert Jordan Pitser) FGS, but is filed directly after the
FGS for Albien Chumbley (son of Samuel Chandler Chumbley). This definitely
puts the family groups out of order
but I can at least find families as they are posted on the List. I don't
want to change my file cabinet to match as yet, because I'm afraid that I
might have problems locating non Chumbley FGS. As you can see, I don't have
this figured out yet, but as soon as I do, I'll get rid of the duplicated
paper records.
No matter what, I will continue to keep folders in file by surname and by
couple. I also keep a folder for each surname for correspondence. One
folder worked just fine until I met all these wonderful, helpful cousins on
the List. Because I have been receiving quite a lot of info from various
people, I have set up individual correspondence folders for each
researcher/cousin and they are filed behind the "general" surname folder.
If you receive documents, FGS, whatever from other researchers, either keep
it in the envelope in which it came, or set up a folder for correspondence
from that reseacher/cousin, etc., or if you decide to file in your surname
or couple folder, please make certain that the name of the individual who
sent you the document, plus the name of the book, film, & repository from
where it came, are somewhere on that document. Someday when your files are
cold & you go back and look at a document, FGS or whatever and you have a
question, you will probably not remember who sent it to you or where they
got it.
By the same token, if you mail any records to anyone, take a moment to put
one of those little address stickers with your name & address on every
sheet you are going to send. I put them on my originals so that when I
xerox them my name & address are always on the document I'm sending. You
definitely want to take credit for the work you have done. It is also very
important to put the name, film # etc. on the document so you too will know
from where it came, in case you have to go back to the original source of
that record at some point in your research.
I can remember when I was a volunteer supervisor at the LAFHC and a patron
came in with a xeroxed page out of a book. She needed to look at the book
again, and had not xeroxed the title page or noted the name of the book.
She was really upset with me because I could not tell her what book the
page came out of. It could have been a book from any library.
Well, I have rambled on long enough, and have probably confused you a lot.
It's hard by E-mail, because I can't draw the labels for the files. What I
suggest you might do is set up one of your surnames as I have suggested,
and see how it works for you. When you come up with a method that works for
you then you can change the rest of your files. Good luck.

Cyndi, Thanks for the information. Helen beat me to the punch. I have a
mound of paper two feet deep and FTM. Looks like your system will work
for me. Bye for now, God Bless Andy
Helen,
Hi! I have tons of files on the computer as well as paper! I think
I may be the wrong one to ask since I am still behind on my filing.
I think I have a handle on it and as soon as I catch up I think this
will work very good for me.
1) FTM-
I put everything in because it enables me to do quick lookups. I
have lots of notes on each person. On the people I am not directly
researching I just put notes as to where the information came from on
the facts page of EACH individual. * NOTE* If you use the same fact
# over for groups of individuals you receive information on from one
person then you only enter the complete information once. After that
just enter the first letter and the whole thing comes up. It makes
it go a LOT faster when you are entering lots of information sent by
one person!
Since you have such a large file consider making a new one with
information people send. Since it is unverified it is better to keep
it separate any way!
2) WORD-
I keep files in my Word program on the computer. Not only does it
make it easy to look back at it can save a LOT of typing time. I can
paste and copy this way to e-mails or to my FTM files.
I have a file for each of the people that post to the list. A lot
of the information is duplicated and one of the things I am doing as
I go through to question each person is I am cleaning out the
duplicate information. When I first started I was keeping
everything, but the files get too bulky. I label them:
Chumbley Helen
Chumbley Andy
This keeps the Chumbleys all together.
Keeping files this way also helps when people you haven't heard from
in a while contact you. You can kind of look back and jog your
memory! :)
I also keep files on each county I am researching and label them:
Missouri, Polk
Missouri, Lawrence
This keeps all the Missouri ones together. In these I paste and copy
notes about places to research, items of interest in that county that
people post, a list of items I am looking for there, etc. It is easy
as I type something into my FTM file to also add pertinent info to my
county files. Periodically I clean these out also!
3) Notebooks
I bought 3" binders and labeled them with each of my ggrandparents
surnames. Some of those have had to be subdivided since them, but
that is easy to do by taking some of your larger family groups and
giving them a notebook of their own.
I got some of the pocket dividers and used them to divide each
surname in the binders. This way I was also able to put papers that
pertained to the families in the pockets.
The first thing in each family section is a descendant tree.
Next I put a page that lists the direct ancestors only and their
relationship to me.
Next I start with the female ancestor that married out of that name.
I put a Family Group Sheet, then all of her and her husbands notes,
next I put a list of records, next go the actual records in order of
occurrence <note: Usually with the women I put in their marriage
certificate and death certificate, but any other records that
happened after they married I put with their husband's file.> the
last being her death certificate.
Next I put her father's Family Group Sheet and start the process
over again until I run out of parents. The only thing that I add to
the others that I don't add to the female's is records I have
collected on children not in my line. If I have too many of these I
will just include a copy of the notes section of my FTM file which
lists the documents and then I file them in my file cabinet.
4) Filing Cabinet
I have hanging file folders because they offer more versatility.
I have these titled by state, family name, order forms, etc...
In each one I have manila files that are subcategories like: County
names, individuals, researcher names, type of order form, etc...
I have different drawers for family names and general information.
5) Safe Deposit Box
One other thing is that I put a copy of EVERYTHING in my safe
deposit box! We upgraded to a large box. For the $20-$40 a year it
costs it is a great place to keep your research safe! You would hate
to have your house burn down and loose everything! I usually make a
copy for my folders, but put the originals in the safe deposit box!
Any way that is what I do, but I am sure that each person has their
own system. Any way it is late and I am way behind on getting these
answered tonight!
Good Luck and God Bless,
Cyndi

Cyndi,
Thanks a lot. Now on to another question. I have been reading (and
trying to keep up) all the notes and messages on the Chumbley list (as well as
others)...my question to you and maybe to Sharon is:
How do you keep all the information-----straight, organized and
know where you are ?????
I have tried to keep a seperate file on each child of Alexander
and Serelda (Rainwater) Chumbley mostly due to the fact that I find it so
interesting to see the history of each.
I do have FTM and have thought to put it all in there, but I have
over 2000 names there NOW that I know it may not be feasible.
Do you keep seperate paper files???? Do you do it by computer?
So what works for you?? I really do want to keep up on all
siblings and other info. Please guide me !!!!!
Thanks for your suggestions,
Helen
