Found 2 articles on the accident in 1844. One in the Lorain Republican (5 June 1844) and another in the Sandusky Clarion about a week later. 2nd article indicated Joel lost his hand and one of the other men died. The first article said they were going to have a meeting at the court to discuss how to take care of those injured. Wonder if there is any documentation on that re Joel. I have searched the paper and found nothing in later issues. Also most of Joel's kids and his wife moved to Cherokee County Ks. I Have been out and photographed most of the headstones including Sarah's

A cousin found this in a newspaper:
"The Lorain Republican" (newspaper) Elyria, June 5, 1860
"Melancholy Accident; It becomes our painful duty to announce that a most lamentble accident occurred in our village on Monday evening of this week. while the Artilery company were firing a salute on the occasion of the Baltimore nominations [for President and congress, etc.] as they were loading the piece for the third discharge it went off prematurely and with most disastrous consequences. the sasualties were as follows: Peter Sherman had his right arm blown off and the thrum of his left, beside other serous injury to his left hand. Joel Chubb had his left hand shattered and the bone broke above the wrist. Nelson Lathrop had his thumb blown off. Mr. Sherman's arm was ampuated in the course of the night by Dr. Townshend. We ought to state, that as far as can be ascertained, no blame can be attached to any concerned. tlhe gun was under the able management of Capt. Seekins and his Artillery company, who generously volunteered their services for the occasion. Accidents wil!
l sometimes happen with the best of precautions and we are all liable to them in all the thousand chanes by "flood and field." Let us then sympathise with the sufferers in this case and do our utmost to relieve them. Worse accidents may befall us tomorrow. A meeting of the citizens will beheld a the Cout House this evening to adopt measures for the relief of the sufferers. Let all true hearted be present."
My family's "legend" was that Joel Chubb died in a fourth of July accident. This accident wasn't the 4th of July but it sounds like it was a similar celebration. Joel didn't die in this accident but it possible that he did die of his wounds sometime later.
Still haven't found a burial place for Joel. Sarah is buried in Baxter Springs.
