Candy Hughes, if you are still on this list, I think I have some
information for you. In August of 2006, you were asking about this
family in the 1850 census for Reading, Adams Co., PA:
George Mummert 40
Lenah 34
Margaret 14
?Mniah? 12 (possibly Maria, Unice?)
Lavina 10 (alternate spelling Lovina)
Caroline 7
Amos 2
You said they were nextdoor to Mary (Mummert) Baker and her second
husband John Baker.
You said: "According to unsourced information, George Mummert b. 25 Sep
1810 d. 15 Nov 1880 (son of Samuel M. Mummert and Catherine Heltz) m. on
20 Nov 1834 Magdalena Chronister b. 11 Jan 1816 d. 5 Feb 1887 in
Reading. The only trouble ? I can't find any record of a Magdalena
Chronister...and seems no one on the list has discussed her. Could she
have been the widow of a Chronister?"
I have an answer from the estate files of Moses Chronister and his widow
Elizabeth Chronister, Adams Co., PA. Moses and Elizabeth did not have
any children, so their "collateral heirs" were their siblings. There
are two Mummerts named in these estate files, as follows:
1. George Mummert married Leah Chronister. (I think this is your
"Magdalena Chronister". They lived at Round Hill, in Tyrone Twp, Adams
Co., as of 1884, according to the estate settlement). Leah was the
daughter of Johannes Chronister III, who was a brother of Moses. John
III died before Moses, so John III's share of Moses' estate passed to
his children. His children were: Jacob, David, John IV, Leah (m.
George Mummert), Sarah, Maria, and Rachel. Some of the children were
also dead, including John IV, who died in 1883, who had daughters named
Lydia and Lavina. I don't know if it might be those two daughters who
are living with George Mummert in the above census or not.
2. There is another Mummert who married a Chronister, but I don't have
his first name. He married Mary Fiscel/Fissel, who was the daughter of
Catharine Lichty/Lischy, who was the daughter of Elizabeth Chronister,
sister of John III.
Also in these estate settlements, a George Baker is mentioned. He was
married to Susannah Fickes, daughter of Peter Fickes, who was a sibling
of Elizabeth who married Moses Chronister. Since Peter Fickes was dead
when sister Elizabeth died, his share passed to his children, including
Susannah who was married to George Baker.
Moses Chronister died first, and his nephew John IV was the
administrator of the estate. John IV had quite a job to locate all of
the heirs, and he didn't get them all, nor did he state all of the
relationships correctly! Some of it was corrected when Moses' widow,
Elizabeth, died. These two estate files have an incredible number of
names and relationships stated in them, which has been very helpful.
Best wishes to you.
Peggy Reeves
