In my message about Mathias Chronister, I meant to say 1830.

MaryLou,
I found him in the 1930 census on ancestry with wife, Sadie which is
sometimes a nickname for Sarah. Both age 33 both from Ohio. This is the 1930
census Lucas, Springfield, Ohio district 173.
This help you at all?
Marilyn
Mary Lou,
I have not done a lot of research with this Mathias Chronister yet. I know
that he was a soldier of the War of 1812, and appears in several different
regiments. There is very little information in those military records,
abstracts of which were posted to this list about a year ago. You could go
to the rootsweb archived messages and scan for his name and read all of the
previous stuff that we posted on him.
You mentioned another big problem with relying too heavily on census--each
individual in the household was not named until the 1850 census. Other
records such as wills, land records, tax records, court records,
marriage/divorce records, etc... need to be searched, but there is no
guarantee that any of those things will give the names of wife and/or
children.
For those older generations, it is sometimes helpful to poke around in the
records of some of his neighbors that lived near him in the census, like I
did with William Jackson Chronister. The solid proof was not in William
Jackson's own file, but in the file of his neighbor who he gave an affidavit
for.
It is possible that someone else might have looked for some of these things
in MO, but so far I have not.
Peg
