Abraham Chronister didn't leave a will but his estate was probated and
David Clubb was named the administrator. I have theorized that Clubb was the
brother of Abraham's deceased first wife and named administrator of the
estate to protect the rights of the children of the first marriage. BUT I
have nothing except proximity to back it up.
What if Mary Cronester was actually Nancy Chronister, widow of Abraham? Does
anyone have a listing for Nancy Chronister in 1840? If this is so, it would
account for Mary not showing up in the 1850 because she married James Revel
in 1848. Most of the children are also accounted for in 1850.
Has anyone done any work on this mystery Mary? I know that Betty Silfies is
a descendant of Abraham. Betty, perhaps you can prove or disprove this
theory.
Debra
Debra,
I don't know anything about Abraham's will, but there was also a David Clubb
enumerated in Lincoln Co., NC in 1840, (census page 125). I don't know how
old he is. I only know because I have a copy of a page from the census
index, since it had other names I was interested in.

I recently posted some Cromasters that I found in Alabama in the 1870 census, and said that I had checked previous years of Alabama census and couldn't find this name or anything similar at all to Chronister.
Since then I have also checked Mississippi. Alabama was originally part of Mississippi territory. There was no name similar to Chronister in the 1840, 1830, or 1820 census. There was a census done of Mississippi territory in 1816 in two parts--the Natchez district and every part other than the Natchez district. There was no Chronister or Chronister look-alike on that. There were also censuses done of just the Natchez district in 1810 and 1792, and there were still no Chronisters.
I can't seem to find who these people were or even WHERE they were prior to 1870. Does anyone else have any comments?

This is the 1870 Federal Census, Alabama, Monroe County, Beat #12, Dennard's Bluff, pages 577B & 578A:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CROMASTER, R. B. (maybe A. B.?) 38 M W Farmer $400 $424 b. AL
May (maybe Mary?) 59 F W Housekeeper NC
Elizabeth 36 F W AL
Catherine 28 F W Labor AL
Mary E. 12 F W AL
Elizabeth 10 F W AL
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Okay, who are these people? Does anybody know? I believe this name is more likely to be a corruption of the spelling of "Chronister" than it is to be a "Cloninger" or a "Croninger".
I find the oldest woman especially interesting. If she was 59 in 1870, that gives her an approximate birth year of 1811 in NC if this is right (census are notoriously full of errors, though). She would be the right age to have been married to one of the sons of Revolutionary James.
The strange thing is that I checked AL in 1860 and other prior years, and I did not find even ONE Chronister family (or a reasonable spelling corruption thereof) except for an Adam Cloniger living with another family in 1860. Yet all of the children in the above family supposedly were born in AL.
Southern Chronisters, can you claim any of these people?

They say it's not crazy to talk to yourself, but when you start answering
yourself...
I have to answer my own posting to correct it. There were NOT two different
Tempest Chronisters in Adams County, PA, who were arrested for bigamy, only
one. Tempest was 26 years old in 1880. He is a child of William B.
Chronister and Catharine Leas. William B. was a Civil War soldier from PA.
I looked again at the two newspaper articles. They are identical--and
exactly 50 years apart. It seems that one of the newspapers would do a
little feature where they would publish some little "human interest" stories
that had been in the news exactly 50 years prior to that day. Tempest was a
re-run.
How horrifying for the wives (the "silly women") to have to see this article
again in their old age if they were still alive. I fail to see how
Tempest's problems were in any way their fault, or why it was "silly" for
them to assume that the young man they were marrying was not already
married!

Here is a list of Chronisters and possible Chronisters (though some are a stretch) who enlisted as Regular Army soldiers during the period between the Mexican War and the Civil War...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. GOLLINGER, JOHN age 30, grey eyes, brown hair, fair complexion, 5' 8 1/2". Born in Germany. Occupation: Soldier. Enlisted 20 Feb 1844 in Detroit by Deas for 5 years Served in the 5th Infantry. Killed in action 8 Sep 1847.

3. GROENINGER, ________ (illegible) age 33, born in Germany. Enlisted 23(?) April 1847 in the second Infantry, Companies H and K. (this was all I could read of it, it was too light on the microfilm).
4. KRINACHOR, JOHN A. age 27, hazel eyes, black hair, light complexion, 5' 3", born in Baden, Germany. Occupation: Cooper. Enlisted 13 Sep 1847 at Buffalo, NY by Captain Andrews as a Private in company G of the 9th Infantry. Discharged 21 Aug 1848 for expiration of service at Fort Adams.

6. KONSINGER, WILLIAM age 21, dark eyes, black hair, dark complexion, 5' 8". Born in Lehigh, PA. Occupation: Carpenter. Enlisted 16 Jan 1851 at Philadelphia by ___(?), Company A, U.S. Engineers. Deserted 16 Jul 1851.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I believe #5 and #7 are the same man. He lied about his age the first time and was discharged when they found out he was a minor. He later enlisted again, using the same age, but it was probably correct the second time. There were so many John Chronisters, in PA and elsewhere, that I don't know the identity of this particular one. Does anyone else?

Debra,
I feel the need to comment on your piece, because you raised some important issues. Just so there is no misunderstanding, I am going to let everyone know where I stand...
I share things in the course of my own research, in the hope that what I post might help others. Don't take a piece of information that I say is in a pension file, and give "pension file" as a source unless you actually order the pension file. If you don't look at the documents yourself, then your source for the information is: "information from Peggy Reeves".
Online pedigrees, books, and other postings that say things like: "I show that..." or "my database says..." or (I love this one) "my research shows"...when no sources are given, are very suspect. If people say these things, and I find that it is really MY endless hours of research that they have copied, that is unethical and illegal. It is called plagiarism, and I will not be afraid to call it that. I can prove I do my own research. Can you? If not, don't claim my work as your own, because I will spot it easily.
Debra, these statements are not directed at you. You are well-versed in genealogical standards. Many people are not, however, and need to know these things. I really appreciate the way you administer this list. It is a pleasure.

Thanks Betty in MO
I will get back to posting soldiers soon. In the meantime, I thought this was interesting...

Your suggestion that Elza may have sent a lady to live and give birth in Wisconsin never occurred to me, but it's certainly a possibility. I've always leaned toward the idea that Ida was probably related to them through the Williams family, and that Frances brought her to the marriage. Trouble is, that in searching the Fond du Lac county records, we could not find any record of any Ida E ---- or similar child being born there, but the records there are very incomplete. In 1850 Fond du Lac county, we have Edward & Van C(?) Williams (Frances' grandparents), then James & Emma Williams Smith (Frances' parents), then William H. Williams, who I believe is a brother of Frances' mother. In the Edward Williams household is Aaron, their 23-yr old son, who is the father of Walter J. Williams, future husband of Ida Chronister. Some of these Williams people moved to Iowa about the same time as the Smith family.
Census records are really not much help. In 1870 the birth place of Elza, Frances & Ida is listed as Wisconsin. The 1880 census, you posted, pointing out the differences in birth locations for the mother of the two girls. Walter & Ida apparently were not counted in the 1900 or 1910 census, when they were busy moving to and settling on their homestead in Montana. In 1920, Ida gives Ohio as the birth place of her father, and Wisconsin as her mother's place of birth. One repeat statistic is the birth place of her father -- Ohio.
Thanks again for your interest.
Darlene
Darlene,
I am trying to "solve" the Ohio Chronisters, but it's very confusing. The
problem with Elza is that he lived in so many different states! Talk about
a wanderer...
You have him listed below in 1850 in Ohio. I don't have 1860, but it sounds
like he might be in Nebraska at that time. Right after the war, he
apparently was in Wisconsin, based on the birthplace of his first child.
His pension documents indicate that he also lived in Iowa, Illinois, and
Minnesota. Here he is in 1880 in MN:
-------------------------------
1880 Census, Minnesota, Brown Co., All townships
TUCKER, Perry 28 farmer NY OH OH
TUCKER, Mahala 27 Wife WI ENG ENG
TUCKER, Della May 7 Daughter IA NY WI
CHRONISTER, Elza 47 Brother-in-law OH OH OH
CHRONISTER, Frances 36 Sister-in-law NY ENG ENG
CHRONISTER, Ida 13 WI OH ENG
CHRONISTER, Melissa 5 IA OH NY
PETERKIN, Freddy 13 WI ENG NY
SMITH, Alonzo 24 WI ENG ENG
The next family, listed immediately after this one is:
SMITH, Joseph 34 CAN CAN CAN
SMITH, Sarah 32 wife IN PA VT
WIMER, George 10 Nephew WI IN OH
------------------------------------------------------------------
Now the questions! The children, Ida and Melissa, are both Elza's children,
verified by his own statements in his pension file. Why do the two children
show different birthplaces for their mothers, when Elza says he was married
only once? Mistake on the census? It looks to me like Frances Chronister
and Mahala Tucker are Smith sisters. I wonder if the Smith nextdoor is
related, since he was b. in Canada? Lots to work with here.

Elza's father during the time covered by the missing marriage records.
Samuel Johnson and Sarah Johnson, his wife, sold property in Richland county
in 1843. Sarah must have died before the 1850 census, and the Sarah shown
there is Samuel's daughter. His will gives good will and best wishes to
daughters Jane Craycraft and Mrs. Isabel Hall who "already have homes and
all the comforts". His estate goes to daughters Sarah & Phebe. There is no
mention of Elza. I'd be interested in any suggestions, thoughts, ideas that
members of the list might have.
