Thanks, Darlene, it's good to hear from you again. Thanks for remembering
me!
I guess I should have answered my own posting to the message board long ago.
I did, indeed, find all sorts of information on my Sarah Marie Chronister.

Woweee, I leave for the evening and come home to all this!
Thanks, Becky, for posting all of the census and other information, and for the correction, too. I transcribe things wrong just like everyone else. The best we can do is proofread what we do, and correct ourselves when mistakes happen.
Thanks, Debra, for pointing out how the margin of error increases each time information changes hands. It really is the truth.
Aside from that, I am VERY excited that everyone wants to hear the truth and the WHOLE truth about their ancestors! What could be better than THAT?!!
I will continue with the Civil War project and do abstracts as I have time--the uncut, uncensored version. If you think John W. was interesting, you haven't seen anything yet!
Thanks, everyone, your enthusiasm is encouraging!

Hi Peggy,
I just now found your posting, my change of address prevented my receiving notification of a reply. I lost track of this site until I very recently did a google search on surnames.
I wanted to show you that the one web site gave full dates for Sarah M. Chroniste. I am always interested in updating the descendants of this couple.

Rebecca, your reminder about the accuracy of published information is an
important one for all of us. All extracted and compiled material, either of
our own work or that of others, is prone to contain more errors than the
original records or microfilmed and or photocopied facsimiles. We cannot
take any compiled index or other work as absolute truth. We must find the
most reliable sources of information and most of the time that will be
microfilm duplication of the original records for those of us who do not
live in easy traveling distance of the source repository. That means most of
us must rely on ordering photocopies by mail (e-Mail) or microfilm at our
local public libraries or a nearby LDS Family History Center.
The internet is a great way to find leads but as researchers and historians
we have to check the published material against the original sources.
Electronic sources are even more prone to proliferate errors because the
vast number of people using the indices and online materials.
You also exhibited a wonderful trait of a reliable researcher. You came back
to the list to correct any mistakes in previously posted information. I
would like to expand that thought to include our need to withdraw any
inaccurate conclusions that further research has shown to be false. I have
made some huge mistakes because of faulty analysis and jumping too quickly
to conclusions. It surely is embarrassing to admit an error but much more
embarrassing to have to have published those conclusions and then have to
retract the mistake in print. I've been there, red-faced. It isn't fun but
it is necessary sometimes.
Rebecca, thank you for your generosity.

Folks,
I got all that info in those emails from ancestry.com I don't have time to check
them all, but I may have gotten some of the numbers incorrect, or perhaps Ancestry
has some of them wrong, but anyway, I don't have time to check them. Before
ordering, let me know and I'll gladly look them up again.
One writer said there are typos on the pension numbers! This is significant,
because people use those
numbers to order the files with, and if they ask for the wrong number, the Archives
will send them the wrong file (they are filed by number, not by name, and the
archives doesn't copy files for free, nor do they give
refunds)!
The wrong numbers noticed were for John S. Chronister, K 165 PA Inf. His invalid's
application number should be: 1113527. There is also a widow's certificate number:
646795.
My apologies ...
Becky
Friends, I feel the need to ask this question of everyone, so as not to offend anyone...
I recently posted an abstract of the pension file of John W. Chronister, who his family said was abusive and had a problem with alcohol. I don't know if anyone on this list "claims" this John as an ancestor, but that leads to my question:
What if I find some detailed personal information such as this about YOUR ancestor? Is there anyone on this list who would be upset if I posted unflattering information about their ancestors that I find in original documents?
I would never post any information, even names and birthdates, of any living persons, and I hope other people won't, either. That is a privacy issue. But what about your ancestors from the Civil War era? Is there anyone who can't handle hearing the "bad"? I am finding lots of good information in valid sources, and I will share it if you can handle it.

Peggy, Did you find this file in Ancestry.com or in person at the
National Archives? I am wondering how much can be accomplished over
the internet by people are not able to travel.

This is from the Civil War pension file of John W. Chronister who served on the ships: "Bienville", "Clara Dotson", "Fairy Chickasaw", and "Gramfus". This is not a complete abstract...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
John was born 6 Mar 1846 in Mansfield, Richland Co., OH. He is 5'6", 214 pounds, hazel eyes, brown hair, florid complexion, scar on forehead.
At the time of enlistment on 11 Mar 1864, he lived in Tiffin, OH.
John married Margret Isabell Colley in Feb of 1870 in Bellville, OH, by Squire Evets.
John's children:
Oscar b. 5 May 1871
Benton b. 8 Apr 1874
Chancy b. 15 Aug 1876
Nancy Pearl b. 19 Sep 1880
Iva Bell b. 8 Jan 1883
John Arthure b. 10 Jun 1885
Son Benton lives in Shiloh, Richland Co., OH, as of an affidavit dated 12 Mar 1916.
Margaret Chronister lives at 4250 Park Avenue E., Mansfield, OH, in 1902. She says John deserted her in April of 1901, and she is now supported by 1 son and 2 daughters.
There is an affidavit from Martha Chronister, no relationship stated, who is 41 years old (maybe 47, not clear) as of the date of the affidavit, 2 Feb 1903.
There is an affidavit that states John would come home drunk and be abusive to his family. It is signed by three of the children: Pearl age 22, Iva age 20, and Arthur age 18.
John lives at 252 N. Franklin Avenue, Mansfield OH, on 2 Feb 1903.

I believe this is the "cousin John Chronister" that William A. Chronister referred to in his pension documents, which I previously posted.

I know that sometimes people don't want to learn anything "bad" about their ancestors, but I'm eager to learn the facts about Elza's parentage, whatever they might be.

Darlene
Thanks for posting the specifics. I had found all of those census listings
and come to the same conclusions as you, but I didn't know about the Scott
family connection and of course the other specifics that you have from wills
and property records. That is helpful.
As far as William A. Chronister is concerned, the information about him not
being married and living with his mother comes from the pension file
affidavit of Margaret, dated 1899, who certainly could have been mistaken.
Again, it was a brief abstract of the file that I did. Perhaps I need to
revisit it again in the future looking for more specifics, also getting the
names of all of the other affiants.
You wrote: "There is no mention of Elza. I'd be interested in any
suggestions, thoughts, ideas that members of the list might have."
I have a lot of thoughts about why your Elza is so "invisible", but they are
not popular. My Sarah Chronister was invisible, not showing up in the
Chronister book or in mention of the family elsewhere, or even in the
census. The reason is because she was illegitimate and the family naturally
wanted to keep it hushed up. One truth about the Chronister book is the
fact that the author didn't print anything "bad" about anyone. That's nice,
but it doesn't give us truthseekers the truth. The book was based largely
on the census. In the earlier census', relationships were not given.
Therefore, any illegitimate child that was being raised by another family
would not show up in the census with his or her parents, but as a servant or
laborer with some other family. If the child was being raised by other
family members of the same last name, it would be easy to assume that the
child was theirs. That's where a lot of errors are made, I think.
The Chronister family had many wonderful people and war heroes, such as your
Elza, and my family's Dixon and James, but like every other extended family,
there were also secrets. I admire my Sarah for the way she lived her life
and raised her family, despite the fact that she was bound out as a young
girl and raised by an unrelated family. There are some newspaper articles
in the social column about her. In one, she visits her mother and sister,
but the newspaper article says that "Susan Chronister and her daughter,
Maggie, gave a birthday supper in honor of Mrs. Henry Yohe (my Sarah), who
is visiting friends here." She was made out to be a visiting friend of the
family, instead of a daughter. The truth was a big secret. How difficult
it must have been for her, and it wasn't even her fault.
I'm happy to help you find the truth, as long as you are prepared to hear
it, whether good or bad.
Peggy Reeves
First, let me apologize for the duplicate listings. On February 25th, I sent one message that didn't come through, and thinking that I had the wrong address, I sent it again. Both finally posted to the list.

Peter Chronister m. Nancy Camp Dec 17, 1835, Richland county, OH
In his Civil War Memoirs, Elza states that he was working for Winfield Scott at Rulo, NB just before he enlisted:
1860 Census, Richardson county, NB, Rulo City, June 12
28/26 G.W. Scott, 39, m, Farmer, 540/135, b. Ohio
Catherine Scott 28, f, housekeeper, b. Ohio
William Scott, 13, m, b. Ohio, attends school
Florence Scott, 4, f, b. Ohio
George Scott, 1, m, b. Ohio
Eliza Chonster, 23, f, Laborer, b. Ohio
This is the only time I've seen a female shown as "laborer". The enumerator must have made some assumptions about this person based on what he thought was the first name.
By 1870, Elza & Frances are married, and they are located with/near the family of Frances in Iowa.
I theorized that Samuel Johnson might have been Elza's maternal grandfather (or his step-father), but haven't been able to do more than theorize. Property records indicate that Samuel Johnson was in Richland county by 1830, so a daughter could have come with him who then married Elza's father during the time covered by the missing marriage records. Samuel Johnson and Sarah Johnson, his wife, sold property in Richland county in 1843. Sarah must have died before the 1850 census, and the Sarah shown there is Samuel's daughter. His will gives good will and best wishes to daughters Jane Craycraft and Mrs. Isabel Hall who "already have homes and all the comforts". His estate goes to daughters Sarah & Phebe. There is no mention of Elza. I'd be interested in any suggestions, thoughts, ideas that members of the list might have.
Peggy --
In your posting about William A Chronister, you state that William was not married and living with his mother in 1899. On the 1900 census of Huron county, OH Wm. A. Chronister and wife Eliza are listed, married for 8 years. Did I mis-interpret your posting?
Darlene Casteel
I sent this to the list yesterday, and it still has not posted, so I'm resending it. Please forgive me if it posts twice...
In case I have never mentioned this to everyone, ancestry is not the only place where you can search for the names of your ancestors to see if they were in the Civil War.
The National Park Service has a wonderful site where you can search by name, regiment, etc...
www.itd.nps.gov/cwss
Since we know that Elza Chronister served in Company H of the 8th Kansas Infantry, I put that regiment into the search engine and got a list of everyone in that regiment. There are no other "Chronister" names, but there is a James K. Conaster/Conatser/Connatser. He is spelled all three ways, but I believe it is the same soldier.
Wilson Chronister signed with an "X". Not knowing how his name was spelled, he was given the spelling "Cronister", which stuck. What about this Conaster who served in the same regiment with Elza? Maybe he was a brother of Elza who didn't know how to spell his name. It would be good to find Elza in the census and see who else is living nearby.
Peggy Reeves
Burtonsville, MD
Darlene,
I think I'm going to have a look at the Elza file and see if there's
something good that they didn't bother to copy for you. I especially want
to look at the names of the various affiants. I don't know when I'll get to
it, though.
I had done a brief little abstract of the pension file of William A.
Chronister who served in D 163, A 187, and F 88 OH Infantry. It's a quickie
abstract, done some time ago, and it isn't complete by any means. Here's
what I have:
---------------------------------------------------------
William m. Eliza Jane Sheely 7 May 1892 by Pastor S. K Wine, U. B. He was
not previously married. He had no children living in 1898.
William lived at 77 E. 6th Street, Mansfield, OH. He was born 14 Aug 1845,
and died 2 Jan 1923.
A Margaret Chronister states that she is a cousin by marriage. Her father
came home (from the war?) at about the same time as William. Margaret's
husband was a foreman on the B & O. Maggie is 51 years old on 11 May 1899.
At that time, William was not married and lived with his mother.
On an affidavit dated 25 Oct 1898, William states he is 54 years old. His
one and only wife, Eliza, was married before to Jonathan Leonard. That
ended in divorce in Huron Co., OH. William was born and raised near
Bellville, Richland Co., OH. His father died when he was quite small. He
has no brothers. He has two sisters; Mrs. William Sumrecks, Mansfield, OH,
and Mrs. George Ridenour. William says that he at one time moved to
Plymouth and made his home with cousin John Chronister, and "John's wife is
at Plymouth yet. Her name is Margaret".
As of 4 April 1917, William lived at Cottage B, State Soldier's Home, Erie
Co., OH.
The pension people occasionally sent out inquiries to friends, neighbors, or
comrades-in-arms to check on the reputation of the person claiming pension.
The pension examiner says: "The claimant's (William's) reputation is only
fair. He is something of a talker and is known as "Windy Bill" because of
his propensity for telling improbable yarns".
------------------------------------------------
Okay, now, this is very confusing because there were TOO MANY men named
"John Chronister"! The "cousin John" that soldier William is talking about
is NOT the John S. Chronister from the K 165 PA Infantry (at least I don't
think so). That one had a first wife named Angeline, and the second was
Maria.
I think the "cousin John Chronister" that William is talking about is John
W. Chronister who was a Navy Seaman. He had a wife named Margaret. I have
an abstract of his pension file that I did a long time ago, and I'll post it
soon. If John W. and William A. are cousins, they their parents are
siblings. Is Elza a brother of one of them...or another cousin?!
