I looked at some more compiled service records for the 1812 soldiers on the list I had posted previously. Unfortunately, none of them were pensioned, so the details about them are sparse. I included the Conatser/Connatser men, since we don't know if they are a mispelling of Chronister or not. Here they are:
(data taken from the soldier's compiled service record files at the National Archives)
3) FRANCOIS CHONESTRE - The last name is also spelled "Chenestre" within the file. 7th Regiment, (LeBeuf's) Louisiana Militia, detachment commanded by Lieutenant Francois St. Martin. Commencement of service: 6 Mar 1815, expiration of service: 19 Mar 1815. Term of service: 14 days.
9) ANDREW CONATSER - The last name is also spelled "Kenatser" and "Kinnatcher" within the same file. Captain Andrew Lawson's Company, 3rd Regiment, Colonel William Johnson's East Tennessee Militia. Private. He entered service on 20 Sep 1814 for six months in Knoxville. "Distance from rendezvous" was 27 miles. Upon enlistment, he stated that he was a resident of Sevier County. On 21 Oct 1815, he names Alexander Preston as his lawful attorney to pursue whatever pay is still due to him. The document is witnessed by William Dickey and James Preston, Jr. Andrew the soldier signs with a mark.
10) HENERY CONNATSER - The last name is also spelled as "Kenetzer" within the same file. He served in Captain John Porter's Company of Infantry, Colonel Edwin E. Booth's Regiment, East Tennessee drafted militia belonging to General Coulter's Brigade. Private. Enlisted on 13 Nov 1814. Discharged 18 May 1815, but paid until 20 May 1815 to allow for two days of travel allowance. "Note: No rations or pay therefor have been drawn in lieu of rations due in Mississippi Territory."
11) ABRAM CONNATSER - The first name is also seen as "Abraham", and the last name is spelled as: "Canacher", "Conatser", "Kanatzer", and "Kanetzer", all within the same file! Captain John Porter's Company of Infantry, Colonel Edwin E. Booth's Regiment, East Tennessee drafted militia belonging to General Coulter's Brigade. Private. Enlisted 13 Nov 1814 at Knoxville. Discharged 18 May 1815, but paid through 20 May 1815 to allow for two days of travel allowance. "Note: No rations or pay therefor have been drawn in lieu of rations due in Mississippi Territory." On 11 Aug 1815, he appointed Thomas Price as his lawful attorney to pursue whatever pay is still due to him. The document was witnessed by Alexander Preston and James Preston in Lewis County, TN. Abram the soldier signs with a mark.
HYPOTHESIS: #10 and #11 have identical service records from the same regiment. #9 and #11 both had a power of attorney form in their files, had the same people witnessing their signatures, and both signed with an "X". This is probably why the name is spelled so many different ways in each of the files--the soldier himself didn't know how his name was spelled, only how to say it. I feel strongly that #9, #10, and #11 were brothers. I don't think we can rule them out as Chronisters, in fact, these are well-used Chronister first names. Immigrant Johannes Chronister had a son named "Heinrich" (my direct ancestor) who went by "Henry" but often has it spelled: "Henery", including on his tombstone.
I am not suggesting that every "Connatser" or "Conatser" is really a Chronister, but these are very similar sounding names. There is inevitably going to be some cross-over: there will be a Chronister here and there whose name is spelled "Connatser" or "Cranster" or something else. If there really is a separate family with the surname: "Connatser", some of those might be accidentally written as "Chronister". I do not find a large number of Conatser/Connatser names anywhere, though, and thus I think it is a mutation of some other surname--perhaps Chronister. I would love to either prove it or disprove it.

I had a chance to look at the ship's passenger list that Marilyn had
mentioned for the ship "Rhein" that this Georg Kronester arrived on. He was
apparently traveling alone, as I did not see any other Kronester/Kranester
names on the passenger list. I am not familiar with German place names, so
I might have spelled some of this wrong. I did the best I could, since it
was tiny handwriting that I had to try and read.
I transcribed this from the original ship's passenger list, which is on
microfilm at the National Archives:

Would you please look over the following names and add any notes that you might have
as to who their parents were, dates and locations of birth, death, marriages? There
are many many surnames that could connect to our family, so you might enjoy browsing
this page. Hopefully you will find someone you need.

Marilyn, I suspect that many of us would "fudge" our age if not for things
like driver's licenses and birth certificates that our ancestors did not
have. I've noticed "age bunching" especially with women and very old men.
Women tend to age slowly until they get to the venerable age, then they,
along with old men, get ancient much faster, especially if they had no teeth
and white hair. An added bonus for the men was that they became exempt from
paying poll tax after a certain age. (That age varied with the individual
state and the tax code of a particular year.) Sometimes the census
information varies because the person reporting is not in possession of the
facts. The person giving the information could be an older child, an in-law
or a neighbor down the road.
Debra
Cathy, thanks for posting. Did you notice her age from 1850 to 1860
increased by only 6 years? Also, the State born in for John,Nancy, & F. G. is Tenn
not Arkansas. This definitely does not match my info.
I just love it...the answer to the question has now become..more questions.
Marilyn
I thought we were done with War of 1812 Chronisters for now, but I just came across a few more that may or may not be Chronisters. I'm going to add them to the "master list" of 1812 guys. See #9, 10, and 11 on this list. I know I had asked about the name "Conatser" in the past, but no one seemed to think they could be Chronisters. In scanning databases for this name, it doesn't usually come up. In other words, I don't think the "Conatser" family really existed as such, I think the name is a mispelling of something else--perhaps Chronister.
Anyway, here's the list again, with the three "new prospects" at the end:
1) CRAMSTER, Abraham - Captain Hugh Tinnen's Company, Mounted Missouri Militia. Private, enlisted 1 April 1815, received at St. Louis. Service expired 8 June 1815. Place of residence: Cape Girardeau County. [This is most certainly a Chronister. The file jacket said: "Cramster", but other items in the file had the name spelled many different ways-"Cromster", "Cromaster", and "Chronisten". This is most likely the son of Revolutionary James]
2) CRONINGER, Benjamin - Captain George Stidger's Company of Riflemen in the 2nd Regiment of Ohio Militia commanded by Lieutenant Colonel John Hindman. Private, enlisted 23 August 1812. Discharged 19 January 1813 at Lower Sandusky.
3) CHONESTRE, Francois - 7th Regiment, LeBeuf's Louisiana Militia. Corporal.
4) CHRONISTER, Matthias - Davis' Battalion, West Tennessee Militia. Private. See also 39th U.S. Infantry.
5) CHRONISTER, Mathias - 39th U.S. Infantry under Colonel J. Williams, 25 years old, 5'10", born in Lincoln, NC. Private, enlisted 7 Feb 1814 at Fort Strawther by Captain John Phagan. Remarks: R. R. Fort Strawther Feb 23, 1814. [this is from the microfilm of U.S. Army enlistments. Same soldier as #4, above. He served in two different regiments].
6) CRONESTER, Mathias - Captain Robert Jetton's troop of Cavalry in Colonel John Coffee's Regiment, West Tennessee Volunteers. Private, mustered in to service 10 Dec 1812 at Nashville. Company pay roll for Dec 10, 1812 through Feb 9, 1813 simply says: "deserted".
7) CHRONISTER, Matthias - 6th Regiment (1814-1815), Mississippi Militia. Private.
8) CRONESTER, Philip - Captain George Barne's Company of Infantry under Colonel Cocke, 2nd Regiment, West Tennessee Militia. Private, enlisted 13 Nov 1814 at Camp Hynes. Discharged 13 May 1815 at Nashville. Resides in Rutherford County, TN as of 2 Sept 1815. Bounty Land Warrants #8617-80-50 and #13914-80-55.
9) Conatser, Andrew - 3rd Regiment (Johnson's) E. Tennessee Militia. Private.
10) Connatser, Henery - 5th Regiment (Booth's) East Tennessee Militia. Private
11) Connatser, Abram - 5th Regiment (Booth's) East Tennessee Militia. Private.

Here is the 1880 census for Thomas. You will also find Henry Chronister
(Chronaster) listed as living next door. Since James T. Chronister died in 1879,
Ann, his wife and children apparrently were living with Thomas by 1880. I
think there is simply an error in the census as to Anns relationship with Thomas
J. Chronister. The 1880 census I have does not have images of the pages.

I can't find an image of the 1880 Census on Chronaster that I can read so I can't
argue with any of what you say, Marilyn, except as Peggy pointed out concerning James
age according to the 1870 Census and Tennessee supposedly being only 32 at that time.
Do you have ages, birth locations etc. from this census on these people? Does anyone
have the census for Thomas in 1850 in Crawford County Arkansas?? I will add my
database on this family at the end of this email. Also I've added my comments in
parethesis and begun with ***

In the 1880 census under Thomas "Chronaster" household there is listed:
Ann Chronaster, Stepdau
Charly I. Chronaster, grandson
John W. Chronaster, grandson
Nancy A. Chronaster, granddaughter
Tennisee G. Chronaster, granddaughter
If Ann is his stepdaughter, then his wife, Tennessee was married before?
Are all 4 of the grandchildren Ann's?
Is Ann, James T. (his sons) widow and children?
I think the latter is correct and that Ann is really his dau in law.
Marilyn Hawley
I have checked my files and cannot find O.J. Chronister. I did notice that
his sons seem to all have a different last name and only one is Chronister.
Are these stepchildren?
Dollar...seems that a couple years back something came up on Dollar or Ollar.
I dont recall exactly what. Will have to search through my paper files.
Marilyn Hawley
To which branch of the Chronister family does O. J. Chronister belong?
The following is from TheTimes Record, a Ft. Smith, AR newspaper, 26 Dec 2003.
O.J. Chronister
O.J. Chronister, 65, of Fort Smith died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, in Fort Smith. He was the manager of Hot Off the Press Newstand and was of the Baptist faith.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Fort Smith with burial at Woodlawn Memorial Park of Fort Smith.
He is survived by a daughter, Pamela Elmore of Huntington; five sons, Micky Reagan of Steprock, Randall Dollar of Muldrow, Kevin Beasley of Alaska, Michael Chronister of Fort Smith and Darren Elmore of Huntington.; and 13 grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Harold and Lewis Harris, Terry Ransom, Darren Elmore, Randy Dollar and Michael Chronister.
Does anyone have the book, Missouri Miscellany, Vol. 17 who would be kind
enough to look up Cronester & Cronister both of which are in the book.
Thank You,
Marilyn Hawley
Now look at this--I messed up my own family!
I meant to say that Casper Chronister, son of Heinrich Chronister and
Susanna Cox (or Coxen) was named in honor of Susanna's GRANDFATHER Casper
Ellicker, not her father. Sorry to be so confusing.

Ah, yes! We talk about Eyb Chronister, but nobody ever does anything about
him! <grin>
I had found this book reference before, but I have not yet seen the book.
It is not in the National Archives library, nor is it at the DAR Library,
because I have looked for it there. I believe we will have to go to a
Family History Center to see it, and I haven't done that yet. It might have
to be ordered first and sent to the nearest FHC, I'm not really sure how
that works.
If anyone else has been to the FHC and looked at this, please enlighten us.
This Eyb arrived in PA the same year that Johannes Chronister arrived, so
this is very significant. He did not arrive on the same ship with Johannes
unless he was underage and thus not named on the passenger manifest.
