Dear Debbi,
The book is in the Adams Co Historical Soc. library and they were very
helpful when I wrote and asked for the chapter on my family. I sent them
money for postage etc. and they were very fast. As Peggy says, do not
take it all as fact. I was told that this book was done entire ly by using
census records. In my family it lead to a lot of wrong maiden names for
wives, and wrong children. The name of the head of the household is
usually right.

Just a thought.
Request an interlibrary loan. No one is likely to loan the book but when the
request comes back it should tell you where the closest copy can be found.

Debbi, You may try contacting Gary at the Allen County Public Library in
Fort Wayne, IN. I understand that he works there. I have been told that he
may be working on another edition of his work. If you find out, I'm sure
there are many people out there who would like to submit corrections and
additions on their branches of the Chronister family.
Debra
Hi everyone
I don't know about any records from Germany that are circulating. If
anybody knows where I could have a look at those, I'd love to hear about it.
I do know that the German Church records from the Lower Bermudian Church,
and others in that area have been translated and published. Many of them
are in databases at Ancestry.com.
Reverend Jacob Lischy was a traveling preacher who took care of a number of
congregations in that area, including the Lower Bermudian Church where
Johannes Chronister is buried. Jacob Lischy kept a private record of
births, baptisms, and communions. His private record has been translated
and published, and it is also at Ancestry.com. I hope to get a look at it
the next time I go to the DAR Library in D.C. I know it's there.
I was asked to post this, for everyone's benefit:
There is some confusion about which county the Lower Bermudian Church lies
in. With the boundary changes that resulted when new counties were formed,
the Lower Bermudian Church has been in four different counties, as follows:
The land that the Lower Bermudian Church is on began in Chester Co., PA
(before the church was built). Lancaster County was formed on 14 October
1728, out of that part of Chester Co. York County was formed out of that
part of Lancaster County on 14 October 1748. Adams County was formed out of
that part of York County on 22 January 1800.
The church building has never moved, but it has been in three different
counties. If you are searching for records, the date makes all the
difference in the world as far as which courthouse you want to write to!

Debra,
I am answering on this list because it seems easier. Just thought I would
tell you about Don Yoder. He is a retired History professor from the
University of PA in Philadelphia and is known in Eastern PA as a
genealogist also. A few years ago I attended a large genealogy conference
in Lancaster sponsored by the Lancaster Historical Assoc. and the Mennonite
Society where he was the keynote speaker. One of the things he mentioned
in his talk was that children who moved far away from their families were
often not mentioned in the father's will. He used Mathias Chronister as an
example of this. I spoke to him after the talk and he said he and Gary
Chronister were working together on a new revised version of the Chronister
book, and to include the research he had done in Germany. I checked the
letter I had written to Gary Chronister after that correcting the many
mistakes in my line in MO and the date was 1996. So far I have seen or
heard nothing.
Do you know hwo did the research in Germany that has circulated for several
years? I have never found that out.

For many years I have been on a quest to identify the sources of information widely circulated regarding our immigrant ancestor, Johannes Chronister.
The earliest published information found so far is in "The Pennsylvania Dutchman," Vol., 1 No. 1, page 6. An article by Don Yoder, a Chronister descendant, entitled, Our Emigrant Forefathers, focused on Johannes Chronister and his family of Lancaster, York and Adams Co., PA.
This article appears to form the foundation of Gary Chronister's introduction in his compilation, "The Chronister Family." You may be able to order a copy of this article by interlibrary loan.

Hello, Chronister List Members.
Someone recently referred me to GenCircles. This is an online resource that
is similar to GenForum and WorldConnect, combined with some other features
as well. One must register to be able to use GenCircles but there is a
stated promise that no personal information is collected and that one will
not be inundated with E-advertisements. There is also a promise that
GenCircles will never take any of the information posted there and burn it

Juanita, I'm glad that the information on your family is accurate in Gary Chronister's book. As with any secondary or compiled source, we have to remember that we must compare the published information with the original records. I have found that much of the information on the Daniel Cronister line out of Lincoln Co., NC is not so accurate.
While it is true that compilations and internet sources can give us clues, we cannot rely on them as our only source of data. If our research findings are to be taken seriously, we have to verify the suppostions and guesses of others; we must compare them with the original records; we must document and cite the sources so that other researchers can backtrack to the actual evidence; we must give credit to the original researcher and not dump all the online databases into a churn hoping that we produce butter. In this case we are more likely to get clabbered milk.

Debbi, Glad to hear from you. I was most impressed with your website and
enjoyed reading Elza Chronister's memories of the Civil War. My ancestor,
James A. Chronister, fought in a Federal unit in Johnson Co., AR.
In the famous/infamous book compiled by Gary A. Chronister, Elza Chronister
is said to be the eldest son of Elijah Chronister and his wife, Margaret
Hallibough of Reading Twp., York Co., PA.

Peggy Reeve's recent postings on corrections of the data published in The
Chronister Family by Gary A. Chronister, 1984, have encouraged me to submit
information on my own family.
For those of you who have one of these books, please make these corrections
and additions on page 144. The name of James E. Chronister's wife and all
four children are incorrect.
4a) James Edward Chronister,10 Dec 1875* - 6 Jun 1953
married: Macie Caroline Murray, 5 Jul 1896
1) James Calvin Chronister, 30 Mar 1897 - 15 May 1980
2) Earl Zachary Chronister, 8 Jul 1899* - 11 Nov 1970
3) William Aaron Chronister, 3 May 1901 - 1 Mar 1999
4)Henry Bruce Chronister, 12 Sep 1903 - 19 May 1994
*dates vary in different records but this appears to be the most accurate
upon evaluation of the original records.

Since I'm finding a lot of people who have been led astray by the false information that is printed in "The Chronister Family" book by Gary Chronister, perhaps it would be helpful if I post a corrected version of page 68 of that book (page 69 is also very erroneous).
PAGE 68, corrrected version:
Lewis Chronister, b. 1 Sep 1818 married on 1 Sep 1839, Eliza Wolf b. 7 Sep 1822. They were the parents of the following children:
1) Dixon Oliver, b. 8 Apr 1841
2) James H., b. 22 Jan 1843
3) Mary Elizabeth, b. 10 Mar 1845
4) Jemima Retura, b. 2 Oct 1847
5) Ann Rebecca, b. 1 Jun 1851
Now it gets a little dicey, because Lewis Chronister's next child was illegitimate--the mother was a neighbor girl--Susan Albert. Their child was:
6) Sarah Marie b. 21 Jul 1852
Sarah Marie was apparently sold out as a "domestic servant' (which is how she is listed in the census) when she was just a child, and was raised by another family, John and Margaret Moritz. Meanwhile, Lewis has another child with his wife, Eliza Wolf:
7) Lewis Wesley b. 31 May 1854
In the Adams County birth records at the PA Archives, we find the birth of the above child (though not named, unfortunately). The birth record names the father as Lewis Chronister. I have only been able to find ONE Lewis Chronister in Adams County old enough to father a child in 1854. I must presume it was another child of his by his mistress, Susan Albert, however, I don't yet have documentation of it.
8) Unnamed child b. 14 Jul 1854
Lewis Chronister's wife, Eliza Wolf, dies on 17 Mar 1855. Lewis' mistress immediately gets pregnant again, and this time Lewis marries her. He married Susan Albert 24 Aug 1856. Note that the Chronister book gives her name as Susan Kelly. This is incorrect. Susan Albert was the daughter of Solomon Albert and Anne Marie Diehl, who are buried in the same cemetery as Lewis and his wives. The next child of Lewis and Susan, and the rest of their children after that are as follows:
9) Charles Albert b. 20 Feb 1857
10) Margaret Amanda 2 Mar 1859
11) Edgar Newton 23 Dec 1860
12) Alavilda Jane 8 Sep 1862
13) Wilson Grant 21 May 1865
14) Johnson Albertis 12 Aug 1867
15) Emory Clayton 24 Oct 1868
16) Murray Day 9 Nov 1872
17) Curtis Dayton 30 Mar 1875
18) Iva Grace 12 Sep 1877
My sources for this information are as follows:
1. Adams County census records, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880.
2. Handwritten record of b., m., d., kept by Charles Chronister (child #9, above).
3. Adams County birth records on microfilm at the Pennsylvania Archives.
4. Legible headstones from the Hampton Union Cemetery in Adams County.
5. Legible headstones from the Greenmount Cemetery in York, PA.
6. Civil War pension file of Dixon O. Chronister from the National Archives.
7. Civil War pension file of James Chronister from the National Archives.
8. Will of Lewis Chronister.
9. Baptism record of Lottie Catharine Yohe.
If the author is on this mailing list, please tell us your sources for the information you printed, if you have any. It would be useful to compare.
