As promised, here are all of the Chronister headstones that were legible or partially legible from the older two sections of the Hampton Union Cemetery (formerly known as the Hampton Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery) in Adams County, PA. Any portions of names or dates that are in parentheses followed by a question mark means that I was unsure of the inscription.
I encourage you all to check these names and dates against your copies of "The Chronister Family" by Gary Chronister. I have put messages on message boards in an attempt to locate the author and contact him about his sources. He has not answered, nor has anyone pointed me to where he can be reached. For anyone who has checked any source documents at all, his book is nothing more than gossip and fiction. Some of it is an obvious attempt to clean up some family sins here and there, which is why anyone who bought the book thinking it is documented truth should demand sources or a refund.
I would like to encourage discussion about these names, in hopes that we can all learn more from it. It should be noted that there were many stones that were either completely illegible or missing entirely, so if you know you have a relative buried here and don't see them, that's probably why. I did not copy this from any cemetery records, I simply walked through and did the transcription from what I could read. I have posted all of the legible Chronister names on this list, but I also transcribed my other surnames that I found buried there including: Albert, Albright, Fissel, Moritz, Sheaffer, Wolf/Wolfe, and Yohe. If you have specific questions about any of those surnames, I would welcome your input. I am NOT writing a book! I did this, and hope that others will share likewise, with the hope of discrediting and devaluing sloppy, undocumented pieces of fiction such as "The Chronister Family".

Hi Betty -
I tried to email you directly but my email was returned so I'm posting here hoping you will respond.
My husband is a Chronister descendant of Johann Matthias and Elizabeth also. I would very much love to have copies of the photos you refer to. I would be happy to pay for photocopies and mailing or if you can scan them and send via email that would be great too. I'm sure you have gotten several such requests. I appreciate your willingness to share.
Thanks in advance.

When I was in Harrisburg a year ago I found Mathias in tax records and land records in Carlisle, and I also saw where he received pay for serving in the French and Indian War.
The picture of the house is the one that was built on the farm by the son Johannes of the immigrant. I believe it may have incorporated part of the original house though. There is a book about the house in the Adams Co Hist Soc. It was written by the Asst director. A man named Jack Chronister also sold TV tapes of a tour of the house, but I lost his address before I could send for it. Write me privately if you want a scanned picture.

There were so many different Germanic religious groups, Amish, Mennonites, Moravians, and the German Baptists like the Church of the Brethren (Dunkards) and the Seventh Day Baptists who had their community in Ephrata. The first 3 were organized in Europe, but the last 2 seem to have developed more in this country. The Lutheran was a more middle of the road church by the time it came to this country. Most of these communities stayed primarily in Lancaster Co, but there was a Church of the Brethren near the Chronisters in PA.
Susannah Earhart, who married James Chronister, son of Mathias, was the daughter of a strong Dunkard family. Her father Phillip was an elder/preacher of the church and was listed as one of the first 2 Dunkard preachers in NC. His brother David owned land adjacent to Johannes Chronister and I wonder if James and Susannah had known one another in PA. My line of Chronisters seem to have kept some of the Dunkard religious practices such as foot washing, at least according to my father's memory.
I have spent a lot of time recently researching the Earharts.

Wow, I'd be interested in seeing a picture of the Cronister homestead, too! I didn't have time to look for it when I visited the Lower Bermudian Cemetery in PA. Does anyone know for sure if Mattheus Cronister was the oldest son of emigrant Johannes Cronister, or a brother? The article by Dr. Don Yoder says that Mattheus served in Carlisle in the French and Indian War. Has anyone looked into military records for him to try to clear this up? I am descended through Johannes Cronister's son, Heinrich ("Henry") Cronister and Susanna Coxen.

Hello, Betty. I realized after I posted the query re: Amish connections of the Chronisters that the time frame wasn't very good, nor was an Amish man likely to have a looking glass as part of his estate. Would there be some general commonalities in the Germanic background?
Anglican sounds much more probable to me than English Catholic for Elizabeth, wife of Mathias.
I think you may have shared the photos of the Lower Bermudian Church and Johannes' homestead with me. I have not worked this line much in the past few years but am beginning to feel drawn to the Chronisters again. I would still like to obtain photocopies of the original confirmation records in Lincoln Co. for Mathias and Elizabeth's children found in Rev. Arndt's journal.

As someone who lives near the PA Dutch country, there is no similarily between the Amish Community and the Lutheran Church. On the frontier at this time there were probably no Roman Catholic Churches. They were in Maryland which was originally a Catholic colony, but mostly they came much later with the waves of people from Eastern Europe. York Co at that time was German and some Scots Irish and Welsh.
As I think about it she might have been Anglican because I have seen that referred to as English Catholic.
I have beautiful pictures of the Lower Bermudian Church and the Johannes Chronister house.

Chronister researchers frequently state that Matthias Cronister married an English Catholic named Elizabeth. Does anyone have any documentation for this well-circulated belief?
If this is true, did Elizabeth convert to Matthias' faith? Published records of the Lower Burmudian Lutheran Church in York Co., PA, indicate that Matthias and Elizabeth Cronister were members of the congregation for several years.
Is it possible that instead of an English Catholic, that Matthias married outside the Pennsylvania German culture and this was the origin of the appellation English (non-Amish)?
Was/Is it possible to convert to the Amish faith and be accepted as one of the community?
