Hope someone can help me, you may want to go get a tea or a coffee, I'm about to write a book LOL. This is my grandfather. Story goes, he disowned his family, supposedly over religion and he never talked about them. My dad either knows nothing or won't talk about it. Very frustrating.
I cannot find any records of this John Christy before 1917, which was his draft card. He lived in Cleveland Ohio when this occured, I know for certain this record is his. I purchased his social security form and it says his father's name is "Harrold Christy" and mother "Sarah Ackerman" Again, I'm sure this is the right form, his wife's name is on it. I cannot find any relevant searches of these names in the Census records. Then after this, I found a 1920 census record of a John Christy living in Cuyohoga/Cleveland Ohio born in the Philippines. I passed over this record many times, finally I decided to take a closer look and discovered "Philippines" actually was a poor spelling of "Philadelphia", which matches up with him. Census stated his dad was born in Illinois, mother born in Holland. Occupation matches something he would have done, managed a restaurant, he was known to manage a hotel. Then I found a 1930 census from Detroit MI, another place which was mentioned he had l!
ived, supposedly owned Detroit property and lost it in the depression. This record stated again his mom was born in Holland, but this time his father was born in Germany. Occupation sounded right, baker, he went to baking school in the army. Then, I noticed the census said he was divorced. Searched and found a marriage record for Detroit Mi in August 1921 John Christy to Blanche Nutting, I found a census record for her living in Cleveland Ohio, so it ties together. They had no children, so it could be conveniently not mentioned and forgotten.....I found Blanche Christy in Wayne county MI in 1930 living as head of household alone. But the disturbing part is, his parents names are listed as "Orrin Christy" and "Sarah Burkes" Still the name Sarah for his mom. I cannot find these two in the census either. These census records, I do not know 100% for sure if it's him or not. Comparing the dates, places he was known to live, occupations, it seems VERY likely that it is him.
I don't know what to think...don't know if perhaps he changed his name during WW1 because of hostility toward Germans. Maybe he said his dad was born in Illinois in the 1920 census due to this hostility? Maybe he toyed around with the names because he didn't want anyone to find his family or he didn't want them to find him? Maybe I'm just way off my rocker LOL.
Hopefully someone in this community may know something. I attached photos of John Christy, also of his second? wife Lois Mabel Yohe to this post(Smith, appears she may have used mother's maiden name, she hated her dad.) They too got divorced, he's no stranger to divorce. If anyone has any information my email is cbjbinc(a)hotmail.com. Would really appreciate it, because this mystery is driving me crazy! Thanks for taking the time to read this mess.
