Surname: Christy, Christie, Shirley, Coates, Wheatley
-------------------------
Wm. Samuel Christie(y), my great-great grandfather, was born 30 March 1856
in Owen County, Kentucky. He was the son of John T. Christy(ie) and Mary
Ann Coates. He was married in Owen County on 7 June 1883 to Ruth Shirley
(daughter of John C. Shirley and Elizabeth Wheatley). Sam Christie died
on 15 June 1939. Sam Christie is buried at the Poplar Grove Cemetery in
Owen County, Kentucky. I don't have a birth date for John T. Christy but
according to Sam's death certificate, his father was born in Pennsylvania.
Sorry that I couldn't be of more help to you - don't give up - keep searching!

There were 4 Christy (Amanda - IN; Betsey - OK; Meta A. - IN; Oran -
Col.) on the Miller Cherokee Roll (Rejected). I assume some are on the
accepted roll, but I do not have it. There were many people falsely
rejected. Their applications, rejected or not, state their ancestry and
why they feel they were of Cherokee descent.
The table of contents of a new academic study of the roll is at
http://members.aol.com/rarebk
The site also has on-line the surname index of "Starr's Old Cherokee
Families and Their Genealogy," a Cherokee Genealogy Tutorial which is a
great primer on how to do effective Indian genealogy research, the 1835
Cherokee census which is within the tutorial, other indexes, and a Native
American CD which appears to contain huge amounts of Native American
genealogical material. Very fascinating.
