Do you know anything more about this first William? I'm curious about the Dicky children Stephen and William. My William's wife, Nancy Taylor Christopher, had a sister named Hannah Steele Taylor.Hannah Taylor married George Dickey. The Taylors were in Rutherford Co, NC, the Dickeys were in Macon Co, NC. I believe there is about two counties between Rutherford and Macon counties.George and Hannah Taylor Dickey were the first settlers in Mineral Bluff, Fannin Co, GA.Dickey is an unusual surname and this post really makes me wonder where William picked up these two boys.

No thanks to me are due. Bette got me to test, took her a year of waiting
for me to decode to get tested. I really did not get involved until she
tested a Nicholas Descendant who matched my YDNA. Then I got involved
helping other people get tested as she has been doing all along. She is
the one who solved our line and several others and deserves all the credit.
All I did was toss some money at a "sure thing" Nicholas descendant Bette
found first, with the basic test, and a few others on my own. I also went
beyond the what is called STR marker testing that is initially done on any
test and had all my SNP's analyzed and have a confirmed haplogroup of
R-FGC4183. The SNP tree is growing all the time as more and more people
get SNP testing done; so I further test down to a SNP called R-FGC29470
which is not on the tree officially yet. There are only 5 people on earth
that have tested their SNP's that test positive for that SNP.
The cool thing about that is that all the people who descend from Nicholas
Christopher also will test to R-FGC29470 which takes us all back to a
common ancestor from over 3500 years in the past. Not all of us with that
particular SNP have the same Surname, because Surnames did not come into
use globally until the 14 and 15 th centuries.
For all Christopher's, the basic 67 marker test will establish the branch
you belong to, back about 350 years. Need to tests SNP's to go further
back, but only one person per line needs to get the SNP testing done.

Ancestry.com is the banker behind rootsweb.com , they acquired it some years back, but allow it to run as a free genealogy research website. A while back Ancestry decided to migrate rootsweb servers onto their servers. Since they have tried to implement this, roots web is crashed in many areas. They can't seem to get it working as they planned, as soon as they planned. With that in mind, have patience with our half working message boards. I can't get tools I use to keep things like I like them, hopefully in time they will figure it out and fix it.
If I had a different way to fix this, believe me, I would.
David
There's been a small group of us working kinda in the background on our own lines,
not to mean we don't still interact with the board, but lately there's been nothing to react to.
What are you folks doing these days, enjoying the summer heat? To me, that means staying
inside, and researching is now easier, the computer is right there, walk by it every
day, it's something to do, and I am research junkie :)
Send out a few messages to the board, tell us about your line, tell us where you might be
stuck. We have some good searchers on the board, maybe it will be your lucky day, or it
could be ours as well, you might be the long lost cousin we've all been trying to find, or
you might find some new family members like almost all of us have. This board is in no
a failure, we have helped and been helped by others since I can remember, and the good
results out weigh our short comings, I think.
Something new is in the air, not really, but something that has taken forever to get off
the ground has now taken off with pretty good success. It's DNA testing, while it's been
around, it never took off with Christopher's it seems. Let me tell you a brief story about
DNA, first and foremost, the results only report what they find, they don't stretch the
truth, they only tell the truth. While most of the results I have been exposed to have had
at least the basic results we are looking for, sometimes, and it seems to be sort of rare, a
researcher might end up with the wrong line of Christopher's by mistake, it happens. The
other thing can be, and there is no shield or protection from this, and anyone who takes
a DNA test opens this door. It is possible that the test will return not matching any of
the other results that are on the site, though with each week or two it seems, more results
are coming in. There are a handful of non-matches on the site, waiting on another tester
to come in and provide a match, that's the foundation you build on, from there, and in
time, others will land up matching, these are the folks you end up grouping with, they're
who you're looking for, together you work on and solve some of your families history,
meet new family, cousins, and your tree grows. Everyone sit down if you are not sitting,
every once in a while a test will come in that test negative of the name you are testing
under, your surname. If this happens, well I don't wish it on anyone, but if it does, it's a
rough road to go down. I have only known it to happen a couple of times, and let me say,
it doesn't mean what your first thought might be, id it happens, it means that somewhere
your family line got broken, could be adoption, wrong baby at the hospital, or it might
mean that one of your ancestors wife's had a son from someone other than her husband.
Anywhere the chain gets broke, from that point it stays broke, so it could go all the way
back to the 1700's, or anywhere in the chain. I am only talking about YDNA, which is
the only DNA testing I know a little about. I am not trying to worry anyone with that
but it is a fact to anyone that does the testing, it's a door we all walk through. That said,
you can set your test results to come in private that no one can see them, so it's not
something you have to share with others, or to the world, you have the control to restrict
your test for your eyes only, and change that if and when you see fit.
There are more and more Christopher testers coming to test, it's a great way to find
family you would have never known about. It will also give you a Genetic Distance on
your matches, showing how closely related you are, kinda cool. I have met cousins that
are just 30-45 minutes away that I never new existed. Our goal has been laid out, but one
thing we are trying to map out is the DNA line to old Nicholas of Virginia. I think we are
on a good path, unless other's come in and disprove us, though so far, it's looking pretty
good with a handful of us that claim Nicholas coming out with matches in our YDNA to
affirm out paper work(family trees) with DNA matches, it feels good. If you are from
the Nicholas of Lunenburg line, come test with us.
There are also several other groups testing, Maryland has quite a few testers, some from
Ireland are there, and a fair number of testers waiting for matches. Go look it over, see
what you think, study it, make decision, take the plunge.

I did what I have done before, which I said I wouldn't do, I let this machine get upgraded by windows 10.
I'm not the biggest fan of windows 10, so I may opt out and go back to windows 8 before too long.
Since the time for the free upgrade is going to expire soon, thought I'd give it one more go, in hopes that
it has improved some since I tried it last.
Even if I go back to windows 8, there will come a time when like all other versions, it will end up in the
windows junkyard, so it's a catch 22, danged if you do, danged if you don't.
With each new versions of windows, it's always been my experience that they are taking something from us,
closing us in, so to speak, that's more of an old school issue, digital has lead us to new highs.
The computing world is changing, you can do more today on computers than ever before, a lot of it is about
eye candy, much of which I don't care about or will ever have much use for. That's just me, the new younger
computer / phone guru's use, abuse, exploit all these new applications that don't move me.
I am glad to see things like citizens using their digital cameras to stop, slow down some of
the corruption that's always existed, leading us to, hopefully a better, safer future.
On the other hand, it's scary, dangerous, that people with twisted minds, or anyone, can invade you or your
families right to privacy, scam you by means of digital theft, so be careful all, happens every day.
The thing I think about windows 10, is that it wants to know everything that everybody does, and it's my
opinion that information is gathered largely for marketing purposes. If MS had their way, we'd all be
logged in as soon as we turn on our computers, which is a big draw down to using products like Cortana,
you have to be logged in to access the database for Cortana, too bad, I think it's a cool program, I just
don't wanna be logged in to MS 24/7, so I don't use Cortana. It doesn't end there, MS wants to protect you
in so many ways that require cookies, tracking, etc. I try and toggle as much of that stuff off that really
isn't anything that interest me, or that I need. The casual user may want some of those toggles turned on.
Finding your way around to turn on, turn off, or even use simple everyday programs that I am used to using
is a hassle. I've made my windows 10 look and feel like the old windows that I am more familiar with, so
maybe I will get by. With all those things I have tried to feel like I am back at home with my old interface,
I have to admit, I still get lost in all this mumbo jumbo. It's like everything else I suppose, learn, adapt,
or get left behind. If I wanted all these control / out of control issues, I would have bought a Mac, worst
case, I can always go back to Linux.

I know you have seen any traffic on the board, large part was rootsweb / ancestry are still fighting to migrate the rootsweb servers on to ancestry servers. Can't help buy wonder if that's a clue of future events, pretty soon rootsweb will migrate more and more, till there's nothing left to migrate.
If any of your have research questions or answers, we sure could use some traffic on the board...
David
I always wondered about the Howard at the end of the will. I've had different thoughts on how he could be connected. Coming home shortly.

Here is a transcript of the will of Nicholas Christopher d. 11 Feb 1764 Lunenburg, Virginia
If you are a researching Howard - Christopher pay attention to the MEMO towards the bottom
of the Will, it does have a mention of the Howard name, so maybe you will find one of your
ancestors for your Howard family tree. Good hunting..
