I am searching for the sister of a friend of mine. The sister is Carolyn Nan Christopher b.01/12/1962. Her parents are Nan Elizabeth Weaver & Henry Childs Christopher. Last known she went to Clemson College. Any info would be greatly appreciated by Kelleen.
These are some notes I made regarding S.C. Christopher. I believe it to be
Seaborn C. after he moved out of Morgan Co, GA.
Crawford Co, GA
Sale of the estate of John Cook
Purchaser - S.C. Christopher Jan 20, 1833
Crawford Co, GA
Isaiah Culpepper
List of Accounts owed - S.C. Christopher 18 March 1841
Crawford Co, GA
Isaiah Culpepper - List of insolvent executions
Notes & Accounts - S.C. Christopher Nov 2, 1846
Greene Co, GA
April 3, 1852
Payments for the Banner
S.C. Christopher - paid subscription
Nov 6, 1852
S.C. Christopher - paid subscription
This proves that Seaborn moved out of Morgan Co to Crawford Co in 1832 to
have bought land on Jan 20, 1833.
Also it proves he was there until Nov 2, 1846.
It appears he is back in Greene Co, GA by April 1852 when he subscribed to
the newspaper there.
Does this move back to Greene Co fit in with anyone's research?

I am the great-great granddaughter of Davault Christopher. His son Ephraim
melby is my great grandfather. Ephraim's daughter Cora Ann is my
grandmother. I have a family Bible which was proably Davault's family Bible
that was left to me by my great-aunt Maggie. It list Davault's children &
their ages. Some I can make out but not all. The following names are listed
on one page: Lucise C.(B.11-22-18?), Lucinda(B. 09-19-1839),
Wianner(B.10-10-1841),Sealy(B.01-26-18?) I assume these are children. On the
same page it has Elisabeath Holland(B.1816) and Davolt(B.06-01-1814?).
Elisabeath & Davolt were married 01-01-1836. Some of the writing is hard to
read due to the age of the Bible(copyright 1848). Another page list the
following children, which I have traced in the cencus records: Margaret E.
(B.05-27-1844, Mary M. (B.05-04-1845), James H.(B.08-13-1847),Nancy M.
(B.10-11-1849), Sarah Jane(B.08-25-1851), Ephraim Millbe(B.11-01-1853),
jessie Alexander(B.10-25-1857),and John Turner(B.05-26-1861). I would like
to hear from anyone that is a descendant of this set of Christophers. My
e-mail is danny.jones(a)worldnet.att.net. My name is Sandy.

Another bit of information about DaVault Christopher, I didn't mention was
that according to the 1880 Census he was married 3 times. 1st wife was
Elizabeth Ann Holland. The census has their marraige date as Jan. 15, 1837
but according to the information in the Bible I have they were married Jan.
01, 1836. 2nd wife was Malinda Holland, married Jan. 07, 1843. 3rd wife was
Elizabeth Hall, married Aug. 24, 1843. She was listed in the Bible also but
all I can make out is her name. She is my great,great-grandmother. Sandy

Hi again,
My line of Christophers came out of N.C. as well. One of the earliest was
John and Mary who were married on 8-18-1798 in Grandville Co. Out families
might some how be connected. John and Mary Cannady Christopher moved to Ky
in the very early 1800's. At this point it appears that John's father was
David who was born in Va. about 1745. Davids family migrated to Halifax and
Mecklenburg Co then on to Grandville NC.
I have a few other names concerning this family if you have questions I will
try to help.

Subject: William Christopher born in 1797 in Orange Co., North Carolina. ??
I am trying to look at and help prove William Christopher 1797 Orange
County, N.C. moved with his family to Spartanburg, S.C. between 1820 and
1830. Can someone look this over, its all I could find, and its not enough,
but can we look at this and maybe come up with a little more data to support
this? Does anyone here have the full census reports available to them for
this time period and places? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Re: Christopher Line
The James Willis Christopher you refer to appears to be this #2. Wm. J.
Christopher we find below:
My question is, who are the other Christopher's? Is the John Q.A.
Christopher the same one that was born in 1825 in Tn. and ends up in Texas?
You have stated that your James Willis was born in Spartanburg, S.C., so
then the Christopher's we find in Spartanburg around 1830 must be the
William Christopher b. 1797 that was married to Story from Orange County? In
the 1830 Spartanburg Census we see Ephraim, Nancy, Thomas, and William all
seem to be of the same page, so I assume they are all family? Robert appears
on a different page, so I am not sure if he is there with the others, but
most likely they are all related in some way? So we have what appears to be
heads of households, Ephraim, Nancy, Robert, Thomas, and William. In the
1844 getting married in Cherokee County, we see 14 years later a Nancy
Christopher getting married to a John Christopher. Is this the same Nancy
that was in Spartanburg, there is no Nancy in the 1840 Spartanburg Census?
In 1840 Ephraim, Robert1, and William are listed on the same page while
James(W.?), and Robert2 are listed on a page together(neighbors?), and
Thomas is listed on a page by himself. What we need to do here is look for
information of the other names like Batson, McKinney, and Whitmire, to see
if maybe one of their descendants has some Christopher information in their
files? How do the two Batson girls fit together, what about the two
Christopher's that married them? Why are Nancy, and Margaret, Christopher's
when they are marrying Christopher's, cousins?, widows?
I found these names in my files for Cherokee Co., GA.:
#1. John Q.A. Christopher m. Susan Batson 23 Dec 1847
#2. Wm. J. Christopher m. Martha Batson 7 May 1848
#3. John Christopher m. Nancy Christopher 6 May 1844
#4. Matthew Christopher m. Caroline McKinney 14 Aug 1844
#5. Robert Christopher m. Margaret Christopher 14 Nov 1847
#6. B.P. m. Mary Whitmire 10 Nov 1875. (Benjamin Posey)

I spoke with Mrs. Margarette again today in South Carolina, got a little
more info from her as to the background of her line of Christopher's over in
the Spartanburg, S.C. area. She said this, Her great grandfather was John
Van Diver Christopher, his father was Riley Alonzo Rankin Christopher(Riley
has been reported to have been a Colonel in the service of his country, but
thats not true, in fact he ran a grist mill, and because of his value as a
miller, he never had to serve in the military, his title must have been
honorary), his father was Thomas Christopher, his father was Robert
Christopher, his father was John Christopher, his father was John
Christopher, whos father was Nicholas Christopher who died in Lunenburg, Va.
1754. But, I have to tell yall, Mrs. Margarette will mention Northumberland
in the same breath with Nicholas, so I am not sure of her data, it may cross
lines?
The Robert Christopher that showed up in the Spartanburg area is reported to
have been born in 1774 in North Carolina, reported married to Rebecca White.
I was also told that his mother was Mary Ellen Sharpe, so Mary Ellen would
have been John Jr's wife. I get a little confused looking at the census
reports for the area, Greenville, Spartanburg, right next to each other, yet
in 1830, theres an Ephraim in each report? Anyway, this lady knows of
Ephraim being there, but doesn't know his connection. But the 1830
Spartanburg census would show her Robert, I am thinking that all the others
are his children, as he is supposed to have had children with those names.

son from Spartanburg, just a guess on my part.

I think Mrs. Margarette Said that this Robert getting married could be
Robert's son, who is supposed to have gone to Alabama?
Georgia
Cherokee County
Christopher, Margaret married Christopher, Robert on 14 Nov 1847 in Cherokee
County, Georgia
Below, Mrs Margarette tells me that this is her Robert, but he should have
been listed as 75, and it must have been a census error, also, she states
that the William is one of Robert's sons.

So the bottom line here, is I don't know, all I am doing is being a
messenger, yall need to look this data over carefully, as I don't pretend to
know one way or the other. I say check the names of the two women, Robert's
mother, and wife, lets see where they lead us.
Thanks,
David

1662: From England to the Eastern Shore
After receiving the Charter of Maryland from King Charles I in 1634,
Lord
Baltimore needed to populate his new province. If he was to profit from the
fees and the trade that he hoped would develop with England and the other
New
World provinces, he needed to attract settlers. He did so by establishing a
system of incentives known as "headrights." To each settler who agreed to
emigrate to Maryland and establish a manor, Lord Baltimore granted a parcel
of up to 2000 acres which depended in size on the number of people the
settler brought with him.
Those who could not afford the cost of a voyage signed on with a master,
thereby enlarging the masters estate. In a typical indenture, the master
would promise to furnish transportation, "Meat, Drinke, Apparell and
Lodging,
with other necessaries" during the servants term and then, on its completion
four to five years later, to supply him with clothes, a years provision of
corn, and the right to fifty acres of land.
So it was that a Calvert County planter named Francis Billingsley
arranged for the transport of several servants from London after his own
immigration in 1652. One of those servants was a young man named John
Christopher, who arrived at Billingsley's Upper Cliffs plantation in 1662.
Within five years he had a wife, Ann, and a namesake a son John born on
January 15, 1669 in Calvert County. Three more children followed Jane in
1672; Anne, born in Wicomico Hundred (part of Somerset County) in 1677; and
Ephraim, born in 1683.
John's life in Maryland began at a time when tobacco was the primary
revenue source of the "planters " or plantation owners to whom servants like
John were indentured. Black slavery did not catch on in Maryland until the
early 1700s, and the white indentured srrvitude was therefore essential to
the plantation economy. Life for the indentured servant was brutal. Each
was
expected in a year to till 6000 hillocks of tobacco and 5 acres of corn.
Mistreatment of servants by their masters was common. John and Ann
doubtless
spent their first years together on the Upper Clifts plantation, engaged in
the drudgery of sotweed manufacture.
Transported servants were entitled , after their five years of service,
to live as freemen and to take possession of 50-acre parcels. The dreams
that these fortune-seekers had of transforming these parcels into
plantations
were rarely realized. More often, the wealth and power of the large
landowners gave them an advantage against which the newly freed servants
could not compete, and they were ultimately forced to sell their parcels and
sign on as laborers.
John Christopher was apparently an exception. He succeeded. On June 8,
1680, he proved his right to fifty acres of land, and he managed to keep it.
While he was probably never wealthy, he was sufficiently provident to have
some of the larger landowners endebted to him by the latter part of 1680,
and
three years later, he was granted patents to two parcels in Somerset County.
"Battlefield," consisting of 50 acres, and "Marsham" 100 acres, were both
located Wicomico Hundred, near Princess Anne. In 1689, John Christopher was
one of 258 Somerset County landowners who signed the Somerset Address of
Loyalty to King William III. John evidently died sometime before 1720.
The Christopher lines of Somerset County have not all been sorted, but
it
is apparent that the family gravitated toward the south end of the County
(which then bordered on the Nanticoke River and Dorchester County) and
became
affiliated with Stepney Parish. Some eventually moved across the Nanticoke
into Dorchester County.
Levin (born circa 1797) and William Christopher (1794-1857) were
probably
brothers, but in any event were the progenitors of the Christopher families
which now populate Dorchester and Caroline Counties on the Eastern Shore of
Maryland. While Levin's and William's connection to the immigrant John has
eluded proof, it seems virtually certain that John was indeed their ancestor
-- and ours.

This is maybe the answer, this is the same Robert that's married to Rebecca
White, who in turn moves to SC. This Robert, is supposed to be the son of
John and Mary Ellen.
