Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

Hi Dale,
Below are the directions to the graves of Lewis Yancey Christmas and Jane
Yancey Christmas Green (better known as the William Christmas Cemetery). The
directions assume one is driving south on State Road #1001 from Warrenton
proper.
"Directions to cemetery: Travel from Warrenton on State Road #1001 -
Martin Luther King Blvd. for 3.1 miles. Turn right onto Cooper Drive.
Go one tenth mile and turn left. Travel a short distance to cemetery
on right - It is enclosed with a rock wall and abandoned in a clump of
small trees, vines, and briars."
Thanks for helping with this much needed project.
Very Respectfully,
Shannon

Shannon,
Thank you ever so for your keen eye and perseverance!
When I have time, I will re-read and print the documents you've found.
This is so very exciting for me. I've been interested in Yellow Jenny/Jinny for a long, long time.
Again, many thanks.
Be well,
Dale
Hi all,
One of the most mysterious Christmas family members is a slave known as
Jinny who bore 12 children for her master, Lewis Yancey
Christmas<http://christmas.whturner.com/tccg19.htm#4635> (1792-1859),
a wealthy planter and attorney in Warren County, North Carolina who
acknowledged and reared his slave progeny before bequeathing to them their
freedom and a sizable inheritance upon his death. For years, some family
researchers have speculated that the slave “Jinney” that Mary L.
Christmas<http://christmas.whturner.com/tccn09.htm#119>,
sister of Lewis Yancey Christmas, inherited from her maternal
grandfather, Lewis
Yancey of Granville County, North
Carolina<http://www.yanceyfamilygenealogy.org/probate/will_029.htm>,
in 1819 was the same “Yellow Jinny” Mary bequeathed to her brother Lewis two
years later. The basis for this assertion has been tenuous at best because
of gaps in documentation. Surely, the birth of Lewis and Jinny’s first
child, Ann, in 1822 - no more than a year after Mary’s death - provides
sufficient, even if circumstantial, evidence that Lewis inherited Jinny w
from his sister Mary.
What complicates the matter is that Mary L. Christmas had at least two
slaves named Jinny both of whom are mentioned in her will. Aside from the
previously mentioned Yellow Jinny, Mary’s will also lists a slave simply as
"Jinny" who was bequeathed to Mary’s mother, Jane (nee Yancey) Christmas
Green <http://christmas.whturner.com/tccn09.htm#115>. While one Jinny can be
tied to the Yancey family, the origins of the other have long been a
question mark. Until now: recently located slave transfer documents in the
Warren County, North Carolina estate records, when considered in the context
of other evidence, apparently indicate that Mary L. Christmas originally
inherited Lewis Yancey Christmas' slave consort, Yellow Jinny, from Lewis
and Mary's paternal grandfather, Captain Thomas
Christmas<http://christmas.whturner.com/tccg05.htm#15> (1744-1810)
of Warren County, North Carolina.
Estate records for Capt. Thomas Christmas (retrieved from FamilySearch.org)
include a file titled "Division of Thomas Christmas' Negroes" returned and
recorded at the February 1813 term of the Warren County court. Among the
documented slaves allotted to the estate of Thomas’ son William
Christmas<http://christmas.whturner.com/tccg09.htm#114> (1766-1804)
is Jinney, appraised at $215 (
https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/show#uri=https%3A//api.familyse...).
Another file, titled "William Christmas Heirs' Division of Negroes" returned
and recorded in the Warren County court's May 1813 Term, shows Polley (Mary
L.) Christmas receiving a slave named Jinny for $215 (
https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/show#uri=https%3A//api.familyse...)
in February 1813. To avoid confusion, I will refer to the slave inherited
from Capt. Thomas Christmas as Jinny Christmas and the slave inherited from
Lewis Yancey as Jinny Yancey.
The Jinny who bore Lewis Yancey Christmas’ children seemingly formed a bond
with Mary L. Christmas, a bond that was most likely formed over a
substantial length of time. Descendants of Lewis and Jinny’s son Seth
possess an heirloom, a silk needlepoint that reads “M. Christmas 1812,” that
some researchers considered as evidence that their slave ancestor may have
been named Martha. <http://yanceyfamilygenealogy.org/christmas.htm> But
Seth’s Wake County, North Carolina marriage certificate identifies Seth’s
mother as “Jennie.” Besides, it is unlikely that a slave in 1812 would have
been literate. More plausibly, Mary L. Christmas created this needlepoint.
Jinny Christmas likely retained Mary's needlepoint as a memento of the
mistress for whom she worked for nearly 8 years and that memento took on new
meaning for generations of Jinny’s descendants who have since passed it on.
Given that Warren County estate records show Mary L. Christmas received
Jinny Christmas at least 6 years prior to inheriting Jinny Yancey and 8
years before Mary’s death (while Jinny Yancey worked for Mary for no more
than 2 years), Jinny Christmas was most likely the one who formed this
attachment to Mary L. Christmas.
It is also more likely that Jinny Christmas and Yellow Jinny, the slave
inherited by Lewis Yancey Christmas, are one and the same. While Jinny
Yancey spent a relatively short time with Mary, her tenure at the Yancey
plantation in Granville County, North Carolina could potentially have been
lengthy. If so, Jane Yancey Christmas Green would have likely become
acquainted with Jinny Yancey and/or her enslaved relatives while growing up
on the Yancey plantation. Thus, it seems more likely that Mary L. Christmas
matched Jinny Yancey to Jane Yancey Christmas Green. Jinney Christmas/Yellow
Jinny is the most logical choice for the mother of Lewis Yancey Christmas’
children since Lewis Yancey Christmas did not live in the same household as
the Jinny (presumably Jinny Yancey) who serviced his mother Jane: both the
1820 US Census and the 1830 US Census indicate that Lewis Yancey Christmas
was the sole free white person living at his address in Sandy Creek, Warren
County, North Carolina. Since Jane headed a household of her own as
evidenced by the aforementioned censuses, it is most likely that her slaves,
including Jinny Yancey, resided with her there. The evidence, as scant as it
is, points to Yellow Jinny being the slave inherited by Captain Thomas
Christmas and the mother of Lewis' children.
Obviously gaps in documentation persist and my interpretation of the facts
rests on what little is known. Since no extant document contains the age of
either Jinny, irrefutable proof supporting my theory remains elusive. But
this new addition to the record opens the door for further research into the
genealogy of enslaved people in the Christmas household. The North Carolina
Probate Records on
FamilySearch.org<https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/show#uri=https%3A//api.familyse...>list
a number of slaves owned by the Christmases in Warren County. I
encourage anyone who is interested to review them.
As always, I look forward to your feedback.

Mr. Shannon,
Many thanks for answering. Would very much like to see the spreadsheet that Mr. Henry Christmas sent to you. Is it on line somewhere.?
I do not believe that my Thomas that married Margaret Underwood, desends from Thomas Cross Christmas. After many, many years. have been unable to find a true source that proves it . This is the reason that I would very much like to find a Christmas ( male ) in my line that would do a cheek swab. Have done several with Family Tree DNA, my brother, myself and my first cousin, but none of us are Christmass. DNA would prove it once and for all.
Many thanks again. Nancy Bryan Weller

Hi Nancy,
Oxford Ancestors apparently conducted the project in 2005. At this point, I have only been able to discern that the Surrey line matches that of Thomas Cross Christmas. Mr. Henry Christmas of the UK has attempted to track the Christmas lines across the UK and Europe; he provided me with a spreadsheet of the family lines that you may find informative. According to the lineage displayed on Herbert Turner's website, your line descends from Thomas Cross Christmas as well: http://christmas.whturner.com/tccg09.htm#113. Like you, I descend from Thomas Cross Christmas via his son John Christmas and his grandson Capt. Thomas Christmas.
Very Respectfully,
Mr. Shannon S. Christmas

Would like to know about the Christmas DNA. How long ago was this done. And what other lines ( of Christmases) if any, were found other than Thomas Cross Christmas.
Am currently trying to find a ( male ) Christmas in my line to do a cheek swab. My line is Thomas Christmas that married 1811
to Margaret Underwood in Caswell Co., N.C. They went to Maury Co., Tenn, had several children, and then to Barren Co., Ky.
Any clues will be greatly appreciated. NancyLouWell(a)cox.net
