Hello all listers,
I am just joining CHRISTMAS-L and have a question or two regarding the
Christmas families of Essex and Cambridgeshire, England, around 1600.
I noted a marriage between Thomas BIRD and Anne CHRISTMAS recorded on 23 Nov
1622 at St. Peter, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England (IGI batch no.
M130591.) This intrigued me because of a family connection with John WHITE
of Messing, Essex, who immigrated to New England in the 1630's. John's
sister Bridget WHITE married a John CHRISTMAS on 28 Sep 1618 in Messing;
this record is cited in the NEH&GR v. 55, concerning the descendants of
Robert WHITE and Bridget ALLGAR, the parents of Bridget and John. John
CHRISTMAS, SR. of Messing, who had recently married Mary Porter ("single
woman") was a witness to the will of Robert WHITE in 1617.
I assume (without proof as of yet, as do some others,) that John CHRISTMAS,
SR. of Messing is the father of John CHRISTMAS, Jr., who married Bridget
WHITE. Is there any evidence to show a connection between the CHRISTMAS
family of Messing and that of Bocking, Essex, or with the CHRISTMAS family
in Cambridgeshire? (I also have extensive personal family connections with
the WHITE family and the PORTER families.)
There is also a marriage recorded in Bocking, Essex, on 02 Apr 1627, between
Franciscus (Francis) AYLETT and Maria (Mary) CHRISTMAS (IGI batch no.
M008101). The AYLETTs, while not relatives, are extensively associated
with the other families of Braintree and Bocking.
Other brothers-in-law of John Christmas, Jr. include James Bowtell, John
Porter, William Goodwin, and Joseph Loomis. These names are all prominent
in the early settlement of New England; many of them ended up in Hartford or
Farmington, CT.
Is anyone on the Christmas list studying the early Essex and/or
Cambridgeshire CHRISTMAS families?
Thanks for your help.
Best regards,
Steve Bird
a descendant of Thomas Bird of Hartford, CT (d. 1662)
