Hello, everyone. My name is Debbie Erickson. I heard about the Christmas Family Home Page from my sister. She was playing around on the net with a search engine and stumbled onto the family tree for the surname Christmas. We are decendents of the Christmas family.
This is my family tree, as far as I know it: My Mother's maiden name is Christmas and was born in Superior Wisconsin. Her father was named Cecil Christmas. Cecil was married to Grace. They had 3 daughters named Merry, Carol and Joy. Carol is my mom. Cecil had a brother named Basil and a sister named Merry. Their father was William R. and he was born in Canada.
I contacted this list's Moderator, Herbert, to introduce myself. He sent me the following census info from 1920. They spelled Cecil's sister's name incorrectly, but the rest seems valid. Our branch of the family choose to spell "Mary" as "Merry". :) Anyway, I did a cursory search over on the Mormon site and there were 2 Williams born in Canada roughly around the time that my great-grandfather was. But their middle initials were different. I don't know if this indicates an inaccuracy, or that I just haven't found the right William in Canada. Since Superior Wisconsin is close to the Ontario Canada border, I presumed that William was born in that Provence.
1920 Census, Douglas Co., WI; Superior; Family 155; ED: 85, p. 8A list William R. Christmas, age
50, born in Canada, came to US in 1883, father born in England, mother in Canada; wife, Flora A.,
47, born in MN, father in ME and mother in VT; 3 children: Basil R., 19; Mary E., 16 & Cecil E., 12;
all born in WI.
I have several questions to all of you. I don't want to shell out $100's for death/birth/marriage certificates. I went to Best Buy and saw many geneaology programs that came with sets of lookup CD's. Are any of them worthwhile? Most of the sets were under $50 and had 10-20 CD's. Do they help in tracing foreign-born decendants? How would I start to find the father of William R.? If someone comes to the U.S. from Canada in 1883, would that be an Ellis Island record? I'm afraid I know very little about this kind of research and I don't know where/how to begin.
Thanks, everyone!
