I received the following email from Mary Christmas. Would you share some of
your family stories about the origin
of our Christmas surname?
The Christmas web page will be updated in early January; the old flu bug
and bronchitis got me behind.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all.

My family tree comes from Richard Christmas of Barnstaple who went to Waterford Ireland and his son, Thomas, was the MP and High Sheriff of Waterford and the family, for generations, were the Christmas family of Whitfield Court, Waterford, Ireland. Richard left brothers and sisters in Barnstaple: brother James (1662-1707) married Susanna Rolle in 1696 but aren't thought to have had children. Brother John ( ?-1714) married first, (in 1688) Elizabeth Parmointier, but had daughters; second marriage (in 1693) was to Margaret Rolle and had 5 daughters and one son, John, in 1704. Don't get too excited as my records show John died in 1737, childless and unmarried but he was John Christmas in Barnstaple.
I have more Johns in my Christmas tree who may have had sons and named them John. I don't know what became of John (c 1587 in Worplesdon) or John (born 1618 in Guildford). But John (in Cranley) of 1643 had son John (in Stoke) of 1666 who had son Thomas born in Stoke (c1692) who may have named his son after his father and grandfather. Lots to wonder about.....
Thank you for the information on John Christmas. This is information I
did not have :o)

Don't know if this info will help, but putting it out there anyway:
9/26/1648 York VA Henry Peasley recd order for transport of a Jonn Christmas.
9/30/1690 John Christmas bound for Maryland from Barnstaple, Eng on the
Standerberg. Shipper: Robert Fishley
10/11/1699 John Christmas bound for VA from Plymouth Eng. aboard the
"Blossom."
To make matters worse, there is a John Christmas mentioned in John Smith's
voyages that went on a Roger North expedition to Guiana and liked it so much
that he stayed for 5 years or more. Then the spanish attacked and Holland ships
came to the rescue. Don't know if they took them to America or where. Still
researching.
Happy hunting.

Do any of you have a Jonathan Christmas ca 1700's in your line who immigrated
to America??? If so I would love to hear from you as he is my brick wall. I
cannot get past him to England from which I believe he came.......Thanks so
much for any help. Joan Gresham, Ga.
Marion,
Thanks for the thought, but I am in good contact with Henry Christmas and he knew that I was going to put out my request on a few lists to which I subscribe. It was a bad time to start communicating really because it is only the Christmas list that has not been asking me where I have left the sleigh or sending all the usual comments which we poor souls have to endure.
Peter
Hi. As Christmas isn't the most common of names do any Christmas families
from Essex link through to Sussex and London? If so, what names are involved as
I'd lke to trace my husband's family back from those areas.
Anna Thomas
Having been listening on the list for some time I have decided that it is now the time to contribute.
I am researching the CHRISTMAS family of Essex - in the Colchester area from 16C. and anybody with information or with similar interests is invited to contact me.
Villages of Easthorpe, Copford, Layers, Birch, Messing, Teys and further down to Mersea are all of interest, as also Colne Valley.
Thanks to all the contributors who have shown me the wide range of interests followed.
Peter Christmas
