Ginger:
Thanks for your response to my query about a will or estate record for John
Jones. I am replying direct rather than to the Warren list since this is of
limited interest.
The John Jones whose will was probated in 1794 was not my John Jones. I
believe the John Jones you cited is the one who is on Capt. Wiiliam
Allston's list of those who signed the loyalty oath in 1778. That district
was down on the Tar River, I think, whereas my John Jones was from upper
Bute/Warren Co. in the Smith/Hawtree area. Two of his sons, Benjamin and
Godfrey, are on the Hawtree district tax list in 1781 so maybe John left the
county with one of the other sons.
I noted on your web page that your ancestor Thomas Christmas came from
Hanover County, Va. I believe that is where my three (possibly four) Jones
brothers came from when they migrated to Granville County in the 1750s.
They, I think, were from Precinct #13 of St. Paul's Parish of Hanover. Do
you know what precinct your ancestor lived in? Others from Precinct #13
came down about the same time as my Jones's - Acrees and Talleys, for
example. I have wondered if there was not an organized movement of some
sort.
Also, I note that your grandfather lived in Arkansas. That is where I grew
up.
Thanks again for your response. Keep up the good work.
