I am very happy to let you know of this web page update. John Young, with
the help of Marion Achurch and others, have carried their line back three
additions generation to Thomas Christmas, b. Abt 1522 - d. 1587,
Guildford, Cy of Surrey, England. This is a wonderful piece of work and
contains over 2700 individuals.
The address for the web site is:
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~research/index.htm
To go straight to John's work: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~research/txxx.htm
With the loss of so many of our records in the US, I feel researchers
tracing their lines into our country will probably connect with our earlier
ancestors, before we could connect them back to England, Ireland, whatever.
That is why works like this are so exciting, and my sincere thanks goes to
John for sharing this work.

We have found the headstone of Lewis Yancey Christmas. It
reads that he was born on the 1st of January in 1792 and
died the 8th of May 1859. Next to his grave is his mother's
stone. Jane Yancey (Christmas) Green. She was born the
17th of Sept. 1774 and married William Christmas 19 July
1790 after his death she married Capt. John Green (the
widower of her dead husband's sister Martha) in 1806. Jane
died May 1st 1845 and is buried in Warren County NC.
The stone is broken that was on Lewis' grave and I would
like to raise the funds to have it reset. If any one out
there is a descendant of Lewis Yancey Christmas and would
like to contribute to the fund please e-mail me at

Dear Christmas List:
I am researching the Sumter/Lee/Kershaw County, South Carolina, lines of the Christmas and allied families of Bramlett,. Baker, Prescott, Copeland, Elmore, Brown, Hardin, Scarborough, Bateman, Barnes, and others.
Since Jonathan Christmas was one of the earliest settlers of this area, as was William Baker, many of these families are doubly related. The idea of marrying cousins was not unheard of, and was indeed a fact of life. After all, there was not very many people in this then-isolated area.
My line of descent as to the Christmas family is:
Jonathan Christmas m. Hester Morton
John Christmas m. Nancy Ann
Arron Christmas m. Martha "Patty" Baker (daughter of Jesse Baker and Rebecca)
Nancy Christmas m. Ripley Copeland
Elizabeth Jane Copeland m. Jonathan Prescott
Harriet Prescott m. Sam Hardin
William Baker m. Margaret Dunnagan
Jesse Baker m. Rebecca
James Addison Baker m. Mary Elizabeth Christmas
Alexander ("Alick") Baker m. Penelope Elmore
Beulah Baker m. Willie Bramlett
Jonathan Prescott was the son of William Prescott and Mary Baker (daughter of Jesse Baker and Rebecca) He was also first cousin to his wife's mother Nancy Christmas, since Nancy's mother Martha and Jonathan's mother Mary were Baker sisters.
Alexander (Alick) Baker was also Jonathan Prescott's and Nancy Christmas' first cousin, since James Addison was Martha and Mary Baker's brother.
Now if I haven't confused myself, and you, James Addison married Mary Elizabeth Christmas, Alexander (Alick's) mother, after his first wife, Penelope Prescott died. I haven't figured out just how, but Mary Elizabeth was likely a descendant of Jonathan Christmas, since that was the only Christmas family in this area. Of course, in theory, she could have been a Christmas widow.
Another of Nancy Christmas Copeland's children, John Marion Copeland married Mary Prescott, daughter of William Prescott and Mary Baker.
So, if you aren't totally confused, you can see that these three families intertwined quite often. It is fascinating to research, and I am never disappointed by boredom. Its funny how it works out when both your parents are your third cousin, as is the case with Harriet Prescott.
Any how, this is some of my connection to the Christmas family. I am always eager to find out new information, and I have loved participating in the mailing list so far. I would love to hear from anyone who is unraveling the same yarn as me.
Best Regards to Everyone,
Debbie Hayes
Deborah_Hayes(a)msn.com
http://www.rootsweb.com/~scsumter is the site for the genweb for this geographic area. It has some Christmas wills and Copeland wills.
Dear Listers: Better late than never.
I am researching my husband's family of Baker from Jesse Hinton Baker,
son of William Baker and Margaret Dunnagan from Sumter District,SC.
Jesse Baker and his wife Rebecca Irby had three children married to
Christmas persons. Martha "Patty" Baker born abt. 1775, married before
1813 to Arron Christmas. Arron was the son of John Christmas and Nancy
Smith.
Celia Baker born 1786 in Houston County, Georgia married Nathan
Christmas and #2, John McCoy. Celia died in Houston County, Georgia in
1856.
James Addison Baker born 1799 in Sumter District, SC. Married before
1855 to Penelope Prescott, and # 2, Mary E. Christmas.
Children of James and Mary E. Christmas are:
Penelope, born 1855 in Sumter District,SC;
Mary Amerintha born abt 1859;
Ellen T. born 1860;
William Mountry born abt. 1862;
Alexander (Ellick or Alick) born abt. 1864;
Jesse Benjamin born May 15, 1867. Died Nov 11, 1915;
Joannah born 1869
Were any of these Christmas persons related to one another? Were three
siblings married to three siblings?
The offspring of Jesse Hinton Baker and Rebecca Irby were also married
to Prescott family.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sammye Baker

Dot Baker called this morning to let me know, and asked that I inform the
List, that Jewelle Hancock, a List member, had passed away today in a Salt
Lake City Hospital. I had written the List a couple months ago regarding
Jewelle's illness, and all were hopeful of a recovery. Although, I never
met Jewelle in person, we did corresponded the last 3 or so years, and she
was always a very nice and gracious person to me.
Jewelle descended from the SC Jonathan Christmas - John - Absolum - Martha
A. & Jesse Hinton Baker - William E. Baker & Ella Lou Toole - Claudia Baker
& John Hendrix.
I do not have any other information; she was a nice lady, and will be missed.

Hi folks.
I'm still working on the Christmas family research, concentrating on those
who settled in Dooly County, GA from Sumter District, SC in 1834. My
family shares Christmas descent through two lines, through two grandparents.
Jonathan Christmas m Hesther Morton
John Christmas m Nancy Ann _____
Nathan Christmas m Celia Baker
Nathan Christmas m1 Sophronia Ann Norton
Mary Jane Christmas m James Michael Howard
Morgie Elizabeth Howard m2 Joseph Nathaniel Sangster
Edie Mae Sanger m George B Christmas (my grandparents)
Jonathan Christmas m Hesther Morton
John Christmas m Nancy Ann _____
Nathan Christmas m Celia Baker
Caleb Christmas m2 Epsey _______
*Nathan Christmas m Mary Frances Draughon
Nathaniel Theodore Christmas m Georgiann H. Draughon
George B Christmas m Edie Mae Sangster
As Herbert has noted on the web site, we're still looking for any
documentary evidence that Caleb Christmas (c1799SC->1860FL) was this
*Nathan's father (Nathan 1833SC-1860GA). Several interesting clues have
suggested this conclusion. If anyone has any new ideas about this, please
share them with the list.
