Howdy folks,
Tom Lloyd here. I am very glad to continue as a fellow
Christmas researcher with all of you. Though work on
my Christmas line has been little as of late, I am
intending to get back to work on the affiliated
line-Norton-of my ggggrandmother Christmas, Sophronia

My Mother was Golda Mae Christmas born 1907 in Gibson Co. IN. Her line is
through John Christmas.
I have one addition to make. Mykinzie Lynne Persinger, my GreatGrandaughter
was born Jan 11, 2001 in Vanderburg Co.,IN. They live in Gibson Co., In
however. She is the grandaughter of my daughter, Deanna Faye Truitt Briggs.
I was doing some research in Gibson Co., In census and found in the 1910
census, a Henry H. Christmas. Seem's I remember a discussion about a Henry
or Harry Christmas who was in Stoddard Co., MO and wondered if it might be
the same person? I remember a discussion about his name being Henry or
Harry? This one is definately Henry. He is 25 years old in 1910. Born about
1885. His wife is Lavada ? She is 24, Children are Mary E. age 8,
Henretta who is 6 and one daughter I could not read the handwriting, but
looks like Perda ? who is 2 years old. You may already have them as I
have not checked the workbook for them.

I am thrilled to be part of a group of Christmas researchers. Does anyone
out their in computer land take their ancestor's line back "across the
pond" to Britain? I know my leap across the water to Canada from England /
Ireland was fairly recently (1887) so I know everyone in my family tree
from then to now. What I am most curious about are who were YOUR British
forefathers as I have a number of Christmas males who may have gone to
America but I know little about them, making me think that they did not die
on British soil.
Here are some Christmas men - free for the taking........
These are my relatives, all Christmas men, listed chronilogically, that I
don't know about their children or lives or where they lived:
John (1572) in Worplesdon.
William (abt. 1580) in Worplesdon, England.
John (c1587) and brother Richard (c1590) born in Worplesdon.
Thomas (c1601) and Robert (c1604) in Guildford.
John (1618) in Guildford.
Robert (c1620) in Cranley.
Edward (1624) in Guildford.
William (1627) in Guildford.
John (c1634) in Guildford.
Charles or Carol (died 1688) b. in Barnstaple.
William (c1646) in Cranley.
Robert (c1657) in Cranley.
James (c1658-1735) in London and brothers William, John.
William (abt. 1690) in Waterford, Ireland.
Thomas (c1692) in Stoke.
John (born 1760-1770) in Waterford, Ireland.
Edward (c1846) and brother Thomas (c1850) in Waterford, Ireland.
This is some of what I know of my direct line. If it is boring skip down
to the next paragraph. My line lived in England from 1493 until 1656 then
moved to Waterford, Ireland in 1656 and stayed until about 1850, then went
back to England until they moved to Canada in 1887:
Henry Christmas (1493-1550) in England married Julia and had
Thomas Christmas (1522-1587) of Guildford, England, married Joan Inwood and
had 5 children, the second son was
Thomas Christmas of Worplesdon, England, who married his older brother's
widow, Joan Christmas (nee Purs), and they had four children, the youngest
was
Thomas Christmas of Worplesdon who married Elizabeth of Guildford and had
nine children, the eldest was
Richard Christmas a merchant of Bristol who petitioned to have his youngest
brother named
Thomas Christmas (1632 or 1622-1709) move to Ireland in 1656 as one of the
merchants of Cromwellian adventurers. In 1663, he had settled on the
Whitfield property in Waterford and Thomas had considerable house property.
In 1664, he was elected mayor. (He was known as Sir Thomas Christmas, the
first, and is written about in Burke's Landed Gentry 1863.) Thomas I was
a merchant turned country gentleman and his oldest son was called
Richard Christmas (1661-1723) was elected mayor and M.P. for the City of
Waterford from 1695 to 1713. Richard bought the Whitfield property and his
oldest son was called
Thomas Chistmas II of Whitfield (1687-1747) set up the Whitfield property
in style and was a member for the City of Waterford. He had four children,
Thomas III (1721-1749) who was member for the County of Waterford at the
same time his father was for the city and married Lady Catherine Beresford
- no children, Elizabeth (1723-?) who married Sir William Osborne
(?-1783)(had 5 children-Sir Thomas, Charles, Henry, Catherine* who marries
her first cousin below*, Elizabeth), Catherine (has illegitimate son John
and he moves to Denmark) and William. The youngest was
William (1734-1786) who married Elizabeth Ludlow and inherited the
Whitfield Court on the property when his older brother, Thomas, died at age
28. They had four children, Thomas, William (1762-1819?), Robert
(1763-1822), and Alicia (1769-1848) (married Charles Osborne *her first
cousin and brother of her brother's wife, in 1793). There is a possible
younger son called John, Freeman of Waterford. The eldest son was called
Thomas Christmas (1757-1821) married his first cousin(his father's sister's
daughter), Catherine Osborne, in 1793, and had five children William
(1798-1867), Catherine (1800-1857) (who married James Kinglet or Knight and
had three children Alice, Kate, and William), Emily (1805-?), Elizabeth,
and Thomas. The youngest son was
Thomas Christmas (1806-1868) of the 8th Hussars married Grace Clarke and
had children, William, Frederick, Emily, and Grace who reached adulthood.
Other children, Maude Marion, Edward, and Thomas may have died young. The
youngest son was
Frederick Granville Christmas (1854-1931) of S. Grelade in Jersey Island
off the coast of England, married on January 22, 1880, May Flora Elton
(1858-1939) and moved to Canada in 1886 or 1887. He was the Anglican
minister of St. George's in Banff, Alberta, St. Stephen's Church in
Saanichton, B.C., then in Cedar, and then Cumberland. Then he moved to
Duncan, in the Cowichan Valley, B.C., in 1907, where Reverend F.G.
Christmas was the first Anglican minister of several local churches. They
had two sons, called Richard (1882-1903 - no issue) and Wilfrid, my
grandfather, and two daughters, Emily Grace and Muriel.
If any one knows about the travels across Canada of the Anglican minister,
Reverend Frederick Granville Christmas (also known as Eric, possibly Rev.
E.H. Christmas, and he liked to be called Father Christmas), in 1886-1890 I
would like to hear about your knowledge of his travels and contacts.
Have any of you Christmas researchers a coat of arms that is like mine?
Our shield is gules, on a fess crenelle or, three Cornish choughs
proper. This means that it has (gules) a red background with a (fess -
also spelt fesse) broad horizontal bar in the middle, (crenelle - also
spelt crenel) with embrasures (an opening with sides flaring outward in a
wall or parapet) alternating with merlons in a battlement (or) coloured
gold. On the horizontal bar are three Cornish choughs birds (black with
red beaks and red legs).
I have a researcher friend, Henry Christmas, who lives in England and he
has made 19 Christmas trees (I love the way that sounds), none of which are
related to each other. He had my tree ready made for me but didn't know of
anyone alive on my tree until I got in touch with him. What a jackpot! He
does not have any American Christmas people unless you can relate them to
Christmas men born in Britain. Email me for his address if you can connect
to Britain...he does NOT have a computer!!!!!!!
Take care, Marion Achurch (nee Christmas)
I am still here, alive and well.. at least at last report.
My researching days have been minimized thanks to other responsibilites
(work, family, etc.) Gee, those things get in the way of GENEALOGY. <smile>
When I research, I am working mostly on Moses CHRISTMAS and his many
descendants, of which I am one.
My CHRISTMAS web site is listed and linked on Herbert's main CHRISTMAS web
site.
My best to everyone,
Cindy Sloan
The List activity has been very slow, and hopefully a "Roll Call" will help
some. We have a lot of new members since our last one, and maybe you can
connect with someone else working on your line. If you would, give your
line back as far as possible, not asking for personal information, and any
research problems you might be having, or another information you can share.
Part of the Christmas Web Page was updated yesterday, mainly the lines of
Thomas Christmas & Jonathan Christmas, as well as the Researcher's Page;
really had no information to add in the other areas, since last update.
This was done on the Rootsweb site, address is:
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~research/index.htm
If time permits, please check out the updates, and let me know of any
corrections/additions needed, or anything you would like changed. After I
hear back from you, I will incorporate changes, and update the AOL, AT&T
sites, as well as the Rootsweb site in a couple weeks.
My thanks to Debbie Hayes for sharing photos of: Jonathan Prescott,
1825-1896; wife, Elizabeth Jane
Copeland, 1823-1909; daughter, Harriett Lula Prescott, abt 1859-?, and
Henry Benjamin Smith, 1828-1892. In my files, and they include only a small
percentage of the total, I show 733 descendants for Henry Benjamin Smith. I
am guessing the total descendants would be over 1000, and probably 99% of
those descendants have never seen a photo of their great----grandfather.
Now through sharing, like Debbie has done, these descendants will have an
opportunity to see, and download a copy of their great----grandfather's
photo. Hopefully, these photos will now never be lost, or become
unidentifiable.
Debbie also shared an 1891 reunion photo of the Bethany Baptist Church
members, with a stretch showing their names; unfortunately I have not been
able to upload those, but will try to do so in the next couple weeks. These
photo are in the Jonathan Christmas section.
I am still working on the CD project, and will try to get a message to
most, also in the next couple weeks.

According to Sister M. Virginia Geiger, Daniel Carroll II, One Man and
His Descendants, 1738-1978, Benjamin Franklin Christmas (1897-1979), known as
B. Frank (the second son of James Miller Christmas and Mary Martha Duval),
was a professional owner-breeder-trainer of horses. B. Frank Christmas
married Margaret Kershaw, a descendant of General John Kershaw of the
Confederate forces in South Carolina, and secondly, Mary Grason (1913- ),
daughter of Samuel Chew Grason (1886-1937) and Emily Elizabeth Cockey
(1882-1976). Many of B. Frank Christmas' horses were stake winners such as
Towson, Home To Papa, Wall Of Roses, Bogie Man, Wakefield Miss, Salingon,
Idle Miss. His farm, "Idle Miss Farm," purchased in 1940, takes its name from
the filly, Idle Miss, who won several stakes. B. Frank Christmas had trained
"close to 20" stake winners and he and Mrs. Mary Grason Christmas are
"credited with having bred eight stake winners."
James Miller Christmas was the son of James Yancey Christmas (1824-1879)
who married Rhoda G. Whitney. Rhoda G. Whitney was the daughter of Myra
Clark Whitney Gaines and William Wallace Whitney, a family famous for their
race horses. James Yancey Christmas was the son of Thomas H. Christmas ( ? -
1839/40) who married Elizabeth Chapman Davis. James Yancey Christmas managed
several farms in Mississippi and purchased a house in Warrenton in 1869 from
a Dr. Wilson. This house is now one of the historical sites called
Wilson-Christmas-Davis House. James Yancey Christmas died in Warrenton in
1879.
Thomas H. Christmas was the son of William Christmas (1766-1804) who was
the son of Thomas and Sarah Duke Christmas and who married June (Jincey)
Yancey (1775-1845).
This information is found under Narrative 33. CHRISTMAS on pages 121-128
of Sister Virginia Geiger's book.
The Post 2000
Mary Christmas
Horse Breeder
Mary Christmas 87, a horse breeder who had been a fixture on
the Maryland thoroughbred circuit for 65 years, died of
cancer December 18 at her home in Timonium, MD.
She had been business manager of Idle Miss Farm, a 140 acre
Monkton horse-breeding farm started by her late husband B.
Frank Christmas. After she stopped managing the farm in the
1980's, she became an avid contract bridge player.
The former Mary Grason, who at races always wore
immaculately tailored suits with silver horseshoe pin for
good luck, was born in Towson and descended from old
Baltimore County families. She was the daughter of John
Grason, former chief judge of Baltimore County Circuit
Court.

This was sent to me from Grace Turner Karish of Virginia. I
thought some one out there may know who this lady was. I
suspect she may have been married to Buckner Christmas of
Longview Township AR born 1910, a son of Buckner Franklin
Christmas and Effie Stanley of Hamburg, Ashley County
Arkansas.
