My 1909 directory of Georgia Counties doesn't list Peach County; it hadn't
been created yet. I believe (though am not certain) that Fort Valley would
have been within Houston County in the 1860 time-frame. -- Jeb Benedict

Dear Bellinda,
I only have Middleton Myrick in my files; she married John Christmas of the
VA/NC (Thomas) branch; son of Thomas - Thomas. They had three children:
Thomas, d. 1799; Rebecca & Sarah. After John died 1784, she married John
Allen.
I am copying the Christmas List, with hopes someone can help.

No date on this clipping, nor where the clipping came from. I am going
to guess the Atlanta Constitution, because of the areas on the back are
suburbs of Atlanta.
There are two clippings together. I do not know who Frances Wells is.
Maybe someone can help me figure that out.

All right everyone. Lets have fun. Over the course of the next few
days, I am going to be sending everyone the obits, wills, and records.
This may or may not pertain to the exact list that I am sending it too,
but if you will all bear with me with your delete key, I would
appreciate it. I do not want to type these out 20 times.
First my list so that everyone will see where this is coming from.
Jim Davis marr. Annie L Dunnaway
Children Charles Tomas Davis marr. Lillian Clark daughter of AJ Clark
and JG ??
(all buried in Dooly County, Williams Cemetery. I don't know all the
names of this part of the family.)
Charles Thomas and Lillian Davis children was Ethel. Married LJ
Spradley.
Note: the Christmas line finally comes in here. I knew there was a
connection, but didn't know where. Lyttle James Spradley Jr.'s parents
were Lyttle james Sr. and Mary Louisa Mims Richardson. Her sister
married a Christmas. I don't know his name, but their daughter is still
living in Florida. I am guessing around Pahokee, (come on Christmas
line, give me a hand :-))
Ok, I'm going to send this, and then try to keep all the lines straight
with the lists. I hope this helps someone!

Hi Marlene,
It is a real pleasure to hear from a Christmas cousin
from Miami, and especially a Merrie Christmas Park
advocate! I've always known that there were a few more
Christmas families in the Miami area. I was never
privy to how all of the families were related. When
and from where did your folks come to Miami? Having
gone through the workbook I see that you descend from
Caleb. That would indeed make your Dad and my Grandpa
Randy third cousins removed once.
I never met my Grandpa, but I've heard alot from my
Grandma, his first wife, and I've managed to get some
news footage from the Wolfson Media Lab in the
basement at the Miami Public Library. I've also known
his two remaining sisters, Florence and Lillie over
the years. He had a Southern accent, but it had a
definite metropolitan twist. Like most other families
at that time his had humble origins. Having studied
his life I've come to the conclusion that he came home
from the war with a greater determination to make
something of his life. He snapped up the opportunity
to get an education on the GI Bill and went to Law and
Business school. The 50's were a whirlwind for him and
the family and when he didn't get back into office in
November 1957 it was very hard on him, but he
continued as an Assistant State's Attorney and in
private Law practice in the 60's.
The park was named in honor of his daughter Merrie in
1958. She was having more and more health problems at
the time, but like other times she recovered and went
on to live until 1969. My Grandpa had been
instrumental in cleaning up the area that became the
park. It had been essentially a swamp with aligators
and brush. They lived just down the street from the
park and could see it out of their front window from
4095 Hardee St. My Grandma said that they would often
go to the park and Merrie would remark that "this is
my pawk". She would go around to people and tell them
to stop smoking in her park.
I'm working on the Norton connection. I am going to
have to bury myself in the Sumter Co. records to see
if any other clues are there. I'll admit to a measure
of ignorance when it comes to all of the facts about
Sophronie. Like most part-time genealogists, I just
took the Clifton reference as gospel.
Thanks for your warm welcome, Marlene, and I look
forward to more correspondence.
Tom

Hey Jeb,
I'm going to have to go back through the 1800 and 1810
census records for Sumter to find that Clifton family.
I recall now having heard the Spivey reference, but I
had forgotten about it. I think that at one time it
refered to a Sophronia Clifton from Spivey, SC. With
this in mind a couple of years ago I went through the
1825 Mill's Atlas-not that it's the final
authority-looking for any reference to Spivey. At the
very top of the Mills Atlas--
http://www.rootsweb.com/~scsumter/maps/sumtermillsmap.jpg--there
is a Spivey's Ferry. If there is any truth to
Sophronie being born in a Spivey maybe this is a lead.
What a mess! I am going to continue to follow the
Norton lead and see if anything comes of it. The
Daniel Norton(1754-1844) family from Sumterville that
I make reference to had 16 children:Milberry, Daniel,
Anna, Elizabeth, Mary, Stephen, Issac, Temperance,
Asa, Jesse, Ezra, Timothy, John, Richard, Samuel, and
Jabez. If Sophronie was indeed a Norton then this
family would be a good candidate. I did get in contact
with the person who posted the note on the Norton
family forum and she said that she was not familiar
with the name Sophronie.
