Good morning everyone. I am new at this list, but am mainly a silent
partner.
I do not have a confirmed connection to the Christmas Families, but I
have a hint that there is a connection.
My line is with the Spradley family.
Lyttle James Spradley Sr. of Macon County GA born abt. 1861. Married
Mary Louisia Richardson abt. 1887.
Children: Lyttle James Spradley Jr abt 1898
Julia
Sammy
Nice
I descend from both of the Lyttle's, but my connection comes from the
Sr. Supposedly, his family was poor, and could not afford a gravesite.
So, He was buried in the plot that belongs to Agnes Christmas. My
relatives tell me that she was "in with that family from Florida". I
have no other info, other than the grave is supposedly in Felton
Cemetary in Montezuma GA, or The Spradley cemetary near Unadilla in
Dooly County.
I have researched all of this line, and have most info, but he died
after 1920, because he is on that census. I have no death cert, or any
other info to go by other than this Agnes Christmas. I'm figuring that
one of Lyttle Sr.'s brothers or sisters married the Christmas family,
but have no proof.
If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. Until then, I'll just
enjoy "hearing" everyone else's story.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Herbert for the monumental work he has done to assist us Christmas descendants. Even though he and I both live in North Carolina, I have never had the pleasure of meeting. Herbert, you make me proud that we have some of the same "Genes". I am not active in researching the Christmas line because I'm working on other of my family lines such as Watts, Evans, Buddin, Jones, Josey. If any of you are interested you can visit my Home Page at: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/w/a/t/Alton-J-Watts/index.html
I am descnded from Jonathan Christmas:

A little genealogical humor:
The following conversation was overheard at a party attended by high
society
people:
"My ancestry goes all the way back to Alexander the Great," said one lady.
She then turned to a second lady and asked, "And how far does your family
go
back?"
"I don't know," was the reply. "All of our records were lost in the
Flood."
Genealogy: Tracing yourself back to better people.
I trace my family history so I will know who to blame.
Can a first cousin, once removed, return?
Searching for lost relatives? Win the lottery!
Do I even WANT ancestors?
Every family tree has some sap in it.
Friends come and go, but relatives tend to accumulate.
Genealogists never die, they just lose their roots.
Genealogy: A haystack full of needles. It's the threads I need.
Genealogy: Where you confuse the dead and irritate the living.
Heredity: Everyone believes in it until their children act like fools!
I think my family tree is a few branches short of full bloom.
Life is lived forwards, but understood backwards.
Theory of relativity: If you go back far enough, we're all related.
I've been one of the quiet list members, harried by other responsibilities
-- and lacking any good research leads lately.
I descend from Nathan Christmas of Sumter District South Carolina, through
two sons (Nathan and Caleb) who emigrated to Dooly County Georgia about 1834.
Son of Bobby CHRISTMAS and Robert Benedict
Grandson of George CHRISTMAS and Edie Mae Sangster
Great-grandson of Nathaniel CHRISTMAS & Georgiann Draughon
GG-grandson of Nathan* CHRISTMAS & Mary Draughon
GGG-grandson of Caleb CHRISTMAS & Epsey _______
GGGG-grandson of Nathan CHRISTMAS & Celia Baker
GGGGG-grandson of John CHRISTMAS & _______
GGGGGG-grandson of Jonathan CHRISTMAS & Hester Morton
Great-grandson of Joseph Sangster & Morgie HOWARD
GG-grandson of James Howard & Mary Jane CHRISTMAS
GGG-grandson of Nathan CHRISTMAS & Sophronia Clifton
GGGG-grandson of Nathan CHRISTMAS & Celia Baker
GGGGG-grandson of John CHRISTMAS & _______
GGGGGG-grandson of Jonathan Christmas & Hester Morton
One outstanding issue: I'm still looking for any documentary evidence to
confirm that Caleb Christmas is the father of GGgf Nathan Christmas. Early
records in Dooly Co GA are few, and the federal and (remnant) state census
are inconclusive.
Another issue: Full name of Caleb Christmas' second wife, Epsey, whom he
joined after leaving his first wife. There was no divorce in those
days. We don't know Epsey's surname, or whether she also had married
previously. I understand that Epsey is itself a nickname, probably a
diminuitive of Elizabeth, like "Betsy". I suspect everyone on the
Christmas list has a female research dead end like this one. We'll
probably never answer this one.
If any of you think you have family lines in Dooly County Georgia, I'll try
to help using county resources I've collected for several years. I live in
Washington DC.

Dear Ones,
'Relatively' speaking, I am a relatively new Christmas relative!
Have noted that the Christmas / Sanders / Sims families are intertwined in
several places. The Sims line (below) leads to some English notables and
royalty. My particular interest at present is locating information on the
Sanders/Saunders line specifically containing Sarah Ann (Nan) Christmas Sander's
husband, Benjamin Sanders. Please share if anything is located/known!

>Sherry, Thank you. My greatgrandmother, Elizabeth (Bruce) Sims, was the
daughter of John L. Bruce and Sarah (Brown) Bruce. Sarah's father was John
Brown. The Browns were an extended family in Wilkinson County, MS. and the
adjoining parish of Feliciana in Lousiana. The Sims family came from South
Carolina, but where the Browns came from, I do not know. If your
information has any references to Louisiana of Mississippi, then please
send it to me. If there are no references to LA or MS, I'm afraid that it
would go to waste.

I am descended from Thomas Christmas of Hanover, Virginia, by way of Sanders
and Sims. Someday I hope to incorporate in the family history that I am
writing a chapter on Thomas and his line. In the meantime, I am still
searching for great- and great-great grandparents. In that search, I
sometimes run across a Christmas in someone else's line. In the last year,
I have sent two such names to Herb.
During the first week in April, I intend to spend three days at the state
archives in Jackson, MS, looking for Sims, Bruce, Brown, Jones, and Cross.
If there is a Christmas that anyone would like for me to get info on, I
would be pleased to spend a limited amount of time doing so.

Herbert, have spent the morning going through the web pages. You have done
an amazing job. Thanks so much for all your guidance and hard work that you
do for all of us.

Dudley,
I received copies from Virginia Osteen Brown Christmas Bible the other day.
She was married first to Jesse Mason Brown. There are a few Brown names
listed with their birthplaces and dates (from SC) do you know if you are in
this line? If you would like the info let me know and will send to you.
Sherry
Hi,
I am descended through Jonathan Christmas and Hester Morton through their
son, John.
John Christmas (10 Jan 1743 - 19 Oct 1810) married Nancy, and through their
son Absolom Christmas.
Absolom Christmas (abt 1774 - abt 1855) married Elizabeth and through their
daughter, Martha who married Jesse Hinton Baker.
Martha Christmas was born 22 Mar 1834 in Sumter Co., SC and died April 1874
in we think Norway, Orangeburg Co., SC although no grave has ever been found.
Jesse Hinton Baker was born 24 Jul 1834 in Sumter Co., SC and died 30 Oct
1905 in Norway, Orangeburg Co., SC.
I continue to search for grave for Martha Christmas Baker and proof that she
is possibly buried in Norway, SC. Many of us would like to know a bit more
about Jonathan Christmas, where and when he was born, and what his link is to
the NC and VA Christmas line.

Hi,
My husband Jim was descended from Thomas Christmas(1) through his daugther
Agnes married to James Whitlock 111. My husband passed away on the 4th of
Sept 1999. I have not been doing much genealogy or online. You can check up
my line on my web page. I hope to move them and update them soon. Until
further notice it is at this site.

The web pages have been completely redone. All of the original web pages
were done individually by hand as well all links. It was a slow, time
consuming process, but it was the only way I knew how to do it. Now the new
web pages were all done by PAF, and includes indexes for names and surnames.
The PAF program is a lot easier, but does have some drawbacks: It might
post a few living persons from the last generation; please let me know if
you see any and I will delete them. It does not allow individual email
addresses for other researchers on pages for their lines, I will do this by
hand if you will let me know the page. PAF did not import a number of
references from my Brother's Keeper files, so some references to documents
and individuals are missing. With over 15000 individuals in my file, this
is a real problem, but I will try to transfer them by hand as time permits.
The Index cannot be updated unless I do a completely new web page, which I
will try to do once/twice a year.
The 4th workbook update was finished the end of November and mailed in
December; to keep it under 800 pages some things in earlier updates had to
be left out. If a number of the List members had not helped in providing
information and reviewing for errors, this would have been an impossible
task. Even with their help, some errors were made. The majority of those
that had copies of the workbook sent corrections during January. With all
of that help, it still contains errors, and that is why it is called a
workbook - a continual work in progress. All of this information, except
for living persons, is now posted on the web to aid you and all other
researchers of our surname. .
In the past, I have tried to keep a page on the web that listed new
information and corrections, but so much new information/corrections came
in during the finalizing of the workbook, I simply lost track of it. Will
try to will a short message later summarizing some of the major additions.
Since I have been trying to learn more about the PAF program, and I still
have some new information to compile, I will probably do an update in
April. If you get a chance to visit the new web page, drop me a note if you
find errors, or have additions or thoughts on how to improve it or changes,
and I will try to incorporate them in the April update.
In updating the web pages, I had a problem with AOL; the PAF files were
larger and I ran out of space; took their offer of more space by joining
their "Hometown" community; this allowed them to put "Banners" across the
top of the page.
I upgraded my membership with Rootsweb and got 25MB of space; now we have
the mirror sites on Rootsweb & AT&T with no Banners. The PAF program allows
me to use the same files on all three sites; before by having to do each
page individually, I could not do this. Cumulative speaking, this should
help increase traffic and connect us with more Christmas family members.
Something is helping, last week I had contacts from Christmas individuals
from England and Ireland. One is supposedly mailing (snail mail) a package
and it is a "slim" chance we might have some on the Richard Christmas that
was in VA during the early-mid 1600's.
Addresses for the sites are below: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~research/http://members.aol.com/herbnet/christmas/webintro.htmlhttp://home.att.net/~wht-abt/christmas/index.htm

I have a request, and will try to update you on some things that have been
going on in 2 messages. This message is about "Member Update" or roll call
and the second message is about the web page.
The List activity has been very weak the last few months. With the
Christmas holidays and trying to get the year 2000 started, tax time, I
realize everyone has been busy. We still have a little over 50 members, but
we have lost some members and added also some in the last year. Since out
membership has changed, lets do a "Member Update" so our newer members can
get to know something about our older members.
To try to get the List going again, during the month of March, would each
member drop a short message to the List regarding their line and any
research problems they are having. Another thing that would be helpful to
all of us, send some information on Christmas families or individuals not
in your line. I am sure we have all collected Christmas data on many
families/individuals that we cannot connect, with hopes of connecting
later; share some of this information with the list. I realize people are
busy, but surely during the entire month of March, you can find 5 minutes
to write a message to the List. List address
is: Christmas-L(a)rootsweb.com
