Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I requested a look up the other day on my Merry Franklin Christmas and I
received the below. Thought I would send it out in case someone else needed
it.
Only listing that I could find on this CD-ROM.

Please welcome two new members, Dudley and Ed, to our Christmas List.
Dudley was very nice in sending the following information recently:
While researching the Sims family in Mississippi, I was interested to find
that a sister of William Rice Sims, Mary, had married a man named Richard
T. Christmas on 11 June, 1833 in Wilkinson County. I have not been able to
ascertain where Richard was living prior to the marriage, where he was
born, or who his parents were.
Tombstone information from the book, WILKINSON COUNTY CEMETERIES, by
Mrs. James Gross and Miss Marion Miles (published by the Woodville Civic
Club, Inc.) lists the following from graves in a private Sims cemetery:
Mary Margaret Christmas, wife of Richard, b. 4 Mar, 1817, d.
15 Dec, 1837.
Anna Christmas Scott, daughter, b. 12 Feb 1836, d. 29 July,
1840.
Harriet Ann Christmas, daughter, b. 1834, d. 15 May, 1835.
I have found nothing about Richard's death.
I hope this info will be of value to someone.
Dudley's line is as follows:
I am descended from Thomas Christmas of Hanover, VA, by way of his
daughter, Sarah Ann, her daughter, Nancy Ann Sanders, and Nancy's son, John
Sanders Sims. John Sanders Sims and his spouse, Nancy (Ann) Hampton, who
had both been born in South Carolina,
moved to Wilkinson County, Mississippi in about 1817. I am descended from
their son, William Rice Sims.
Ed recently send a query regarding his line, which I forward to the list; I
asked Ed about joining the list and helping us connect his line and others,
which he agreed. Ed's information is as follows:
My gr. gr.great grandfather was William Andrew Christmas. His first wife's
name I do not know but, His second wife was Sarah Ann Rigney. Wm. was born in
Earth Co., Tx. 1858 and died in Johnson Co., Tx. 1928. Sarah and Wm. married
in 1886. They had 7 children a) Charlie C. "Blackie" 1893-1974, b) Rosa L.
Christmas-Lowe 1889-1977, c) Lydia Matilda Christmas-Jones 1887-1948, d)
Henry Thomas 1891-1965, e) James Roy 1895-1969, Hattie Mae Christmas-Bronson
1897-1961, f) Annie Viola Christmas-Hernedez 1900-?.
I am a old DOS computer person; had some idea what to do when computer had
a problem; now with Windows 95 or 98, I just use it and hope it does not
crash; think only Bill Gates/Microsoft and the Good Lord know how the
system operates, not sure about the Good Lord. There has been a lot of talk
about the Y2K problems; I know this is not about genealogy, but we all must
use our computers. Joyce, a list member, sent me a message regarding a
possible Y2K problem and how to solve it, that her grandson sent her. I
followed her grandson's directions (I selected "m/d/yyyy") and made the
changes on 3 family computers, including my wife's. We have had no
problems; the only change I've noticed is in my file dates; instead of
showing only 98 or 99 as year, it now shows 1998 or 1999. If you would like
a copy of her grandson's memo, please write Joyce at: Jltruitt(a)aol.com
Richard T. Christmas was the son of Thomas and Rebecca Colyer Christmas.
They were living in St Helene Parish, La. Rebecca's parents were living in
Woodville, Adams Co., Ms when they died. They are buried there. If you want
I will send you what I have. My gtgt grandmother was Nancy (Ann) Rice
Christmas. Isaac and Frances Coyler Rebecca's parents had a dau. named Nancy
who married a Rice.

overall very helpful.

Sandy, I have a death certificate for Leander as well as an extensive
obituary from the local newspaper I obtained while trying to document ID
and/or track migration of parents of my Christmas ancestor, Martha
Christmas. (Martha is Leander's sister.) I have been hoping we would
have someone descended from Leander join the group so I could pass it
along to a direct line descendent. If you don't already have & would
like me to send to you let me know.
Am also sending you a copy of the extract data from different sources
for Carroll Co, MO that I had sent to the list several months ago. You
may already have/know but there are several references to Gilbert and/or
children in them so thought you might find them of interest. I pasted it
at the bottom of this email.

That is great! Finds like this make genealogy research so rewarding. A
genealogist's "buried treasure". If you should happen to find any
pictures of Leander's sister, Martha Christmas Richardson, I would sure
appreciate it if you would make me some copies and/or scan. I will be
happy to pay for a copy negative & reprints. Mom only has a few old,
faded snapshots of her as an elderly woman. Welcome to the group. Gayle

This was copied from another mailing list, with the author's permission;
thought it might be helpful.
Prior to the US's entry into WW1 (approx. 1917-1918) every male between the
age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft. The information
found on the card was provided by the individual himself. The registration
cards vary in information depending on the individual draft board. But by
and large the cards include: The full name of the person (this means first,
full middle name, any additional middle names and last name); the current
address of the man; his age; his birthdate (some include his place of
birth); whether he is a US citizen or a naturalized citizen (some ask if his
father was a naturalized citizen and his father's race); his race; his
occupation; where he is employed (name of employer); address or location of
employment; name and address of his next of kin; some cards ask if the man
is married or single and how many people he supports. The card is signed by
the draftee. On the back of the card his physical description is noted:
Height is broken down by short, medium, tall although some cards give the
actual height in feet and inches; Build by slim, medium, stout although some
cards list actual weight along with the build; color of eyes and hair; any
deformities or injuries are listed (such as one arm missing, blind in one
eye, etc); the name and address of the draft board and the date.
When these original cards were transferred to the East Pointe NARA branch
the LDS spent about 3 years microfilming these cards. There are hundreds and
hundreds of boxes and the LDS opened one box at a time and filmed them - in
state order. However, within each state the cards were filed by draft board,
not by county or by draftee. This makes the searching of the microfilm
difficult to say the least.
The good news is that the Friends of the National Archives took each box
after it was filmed (and checked) and sorted all of these thousands and
thousands of cards into - state and then COUNTY order and then in
alphabetical order by surname and put then in new boxes. The Friends deserve
all the kudos we can give them for this monstrous task.
So ... rather than spending hours and hours searching the LDS microfilm you
can order copies of the original cards from NARA. if you know the county
your ancestor lived in between 1917-1918.
And BTW - Ancestry.com lists WW1 Draft cards in their searchable data bases,
however I know for a fact that there are 22 cards for the surname WHITE
found in McIntosh Co, OK and Ancestry only gave me 4 of them so don't depend
on that site. I was told yesterday that some reps from Ancestry had visited
the archives a couple of weeks ago to talk about filming the cards, took one
look at the hundreds and hundreds of boxes and simply left.
For copies: Send a letter requesting copy(s) to:
NARA
Southeast Region
1557 St. Joseph Ave
East Point, GA 30344
In your letter be sure to say you want copy(s) of the WWI Draft application
Cards. Include the name of your ancestor and his race, the state and the
county. If you want copies of ALL of the cards with a given surname, ask
them the cost of the copies and send a SASE for them to let you know the
copying cost. In your letter be sure and say you want a copy of the FRONT
and BACK of the card. Be sure to send a SASE for the return of you copies.
The cost for the copy is 50 cents - 25 cents for the back and 25 cents for
the front. If you only want one copy send a buck and say the difference is
to be given to the Friends of the Archives, because after all they did all
this wonderful hard work for you <VBG>
If you have any other questions about the cards please write to me and I'll
try to help. I've been "delving" into these cards for the past few years.
But PLEASE don't ask me to get the copies for you. It is difficult for me to
take the time off from work to visit the archive to do my own research <g>.
And feel free to pass this on to any of the lists you are on.

Diane,
I have never been robbed like that before but wanted to say how upset it makes me
to know they have done it to you. Our prayers are with you during this stressful

Diane,
As one who has gone through a similar robbery, I can surely sympathize with
you. I had a like experience a little over five years ago where I awoke when
someone was in my house. My young daughter apparently heard the robbers and
came to my bed. I had been wakened to a noise but when I raised up and
realized my daughter was getting into my bed, I paid no further attention. I
woke the next morning to learn I had been robbed. We think that when my
daughter got up, she scared the robbers off; they went out the back door and
left it open. I lost cash, credit cards, jewelry -- lots of it and a VCR.
After that robbery, I was terrified. For over a year, I never slept in my
own bed again; I slept on the couch in the living room with a big dog nearby.
Even with the dog, I did not feel secure.
About a year later, I was the victim of a Home Invasion. After that, I
insisted that my Adult son move home and he has remained with me ever since.
I immediately went on a search of a home in a safer area and soon moved from
that location.
It is hard to comprehend the feeling of being violated that an occurance like
this causes unless you have been robbed in this way. It is something I have
never been able to put aside. You are so fortunate, as I was, that the
intruders were not violent and left when discovered. I truly hope the
culprits are caught and your jewelry is recovered; but I would not count on
it. I never recovered any of mine even though I personally visited every
pawn shop I could find in my area. So often, the items are sold on the
streets and never recovered. To loose valuable items is disheartening but to
loose family heirlooms, whether priceless articles or a piece of costume
jewelry or other little trinket is devastating.

I woke up today and found out I had been robbed. Has this happened to any of
you. They took my mom's good jewelry. The 2 karat diamond my dad had given
her. real pearls that dad had bought in New Orleans during WWII when he was
stationed down there before being shipped out, mom & I were with him until he
left. They took a lot of other stuff. He came to my room and my dogs got out
and I yelled out and I think I scared him. I thought it was my mom. I feel
as if I have been raped.
Diane
Sorry I don't think you are suppose to talk about anything but genealogy but
aren't we all cousins?
Dear Mary & Stanley,
Ginger was nice enough to write us about you. It is pleasure to meet other
members of our Christmas families. My grandmother was Fauline Christmas,
her father was William Anderson Christmas out of SC.
We have a large family with many lines and we are trying to connect as many
Christmas cousins (close & distant) as possible. We have a Christmas
mailing list with about 50 members, all very nice, helpful and researchers
of many different lines. Most on the mailing list and many others have
shared information on their lines and it is posted on our web page. The
information on your line is at the following address:
http://members.aol.com/herbnet20/christmas/tc15.html
The Christmas home page will give you links to other Christmas branches,
web pages and other researchers. The address to our home page is:
http://members.aol.com/herbnet/christmas/webintro.html
We "try" to make the web page information as accurate as possible. If you
have an opportunity to visit, please drop me a note if you find errors as
to dates, locations and people, or if you have information to add. We do
not post information on living persons to the web page.
The activity on the Christmas mailing list is very light, so it will not
overload your mailbox; if you would like to join, please drop me a note and
I will get you subscribed. The web page does not have an index, still
trying to figure out how to do one; also drop me a note if your have
problems finding information and I will try to help.

I am in Baker, East Baton Rouge Parish, La. It is a small town in the Baton
Rouge area. My Christmas line came to Baker in the 1830's. Nancy Rice
Christmas married Benjamin Anthony Williams. They raised a bunch of kids.
Ben. died in 1858 and Ann, that is what she was called, raised her kids and
grandkids during the Civil War. She was a little bitty thing. I restored a
picture of her. When I find the negative I will send you a copy.
