Below is some correspondence from Terry Thomas regarding a Samuel
Christmas, who went by the name of Samuel Thomas at times, and was in the
Richmond (VA) court records in the 1770-1780's. Terry is very interested in
finding the name of this Samuel's wife.
If anyone has any info on this person, please drop Terry a note and copy
the list. Thanks.

Please welcome John Young from Canada as a new member. John descends from
Sir Thomas Christmas of Waterford Co., Ireland. As we continue to add new
members with different lines, maybe one day we will find where they all
connect. You can access his line at our main page by following the link for
Sir Thomas Christmas. Address is:

Recently, I put up on AT&T a "test" Christmas page, which includes an
index. The AT&T site gives us more web space, and I hope to add some
documents & photos later. This web site was created using PAF, which was
easy, but you have less control over what goes up. However, I am very happy
to have an index, and sorry I could not do one for our present site. At the
present web site, the index would have to be done by hand, and with roughly
12,000 people in the database, I could not do it. Also, with our present
site, I did each page by hand, which was time consuming but it is easier to
add and correct information.
In the next month, if you get a chance to visit the new "test' site, I
would appreciate any & all suggestions on how to make it better. I will
update both sites the end of January - first of February. The address for
the "test" site is: http://home.att.net/~wht-abt/christmas/index.htm
If you have any information you wanted added to the web page, please send
it to me as soon as possible so I can get it added to my PAF program. Also,
if you see any errors at either site, let me know and I will get them
corrected.
The "test" site does not include some of the information on our present web
page, but I have tried to link the two sites. When I update the web pages,
each site will have the same info, but in different formats.
Wish each of you and your families, a Safe & Happy New Year.
Herbert
Annie,
I am copying the Christmas List with this reply. You mention Miller in your
last message; we have an Edward Miller, b. 1800, married Nancy Ann Miller
in KY; son named Edward b. abt 1837. A James Edward Christmas, b. 1842,
married Sarah Miller in IN.

To the wonderful creator of Tweety's page: a very Merry Christmas (belated)
and a wonderful year 2000. From a fellow genealogist and delighted mother
and grandmother,
Penny nee Christmas Carpenter (I truly did have a "Father Christmas")
Thanks so much for my favourite genealogy website!
So glad you had such a nice surprise visit from your family
To YOU,
I had two wonderful surprises for Christmas, my son and my youngest daughter
came for the Day... Neither one had told me they were coming.... I knew my
oldest daughter was coming but she didn't tell me the other two were
coming.... Sure made my day a lot brighter...
May you and your family be surrounded with LOVE...
God Bless,
Shirl

Please welcome Joyce as a new member to our Christmas List. Her ancestor,
Celia Christmas, is the daughter of Nathan Christmas and Celia Baker.
Address to their page is: http://members.aol.com/herbnet/christmas/311.html
Below is some information Joyce sent on her line:
"My great grandfather Daniel McLeod Marshall's mother was Celia Christmas.
I just discovered his name during the summer of this year. It has all been
so exciting. I have posted his picture and a story on the Barbour County
web site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~albarbou/barbour.html I so want to
find out more information about his father Thomas Marshall."
Mary Jean:
I've often wondered what my husband's great-great-grandmother, Mary Ann
CHRISTMUS (1848-1936) may have heard about her name while she was
growing up...Her father was a Baptist minister!

Xmas is one of my daughter's sore points. Think I'll send her the Greek
story. Maybe she won't be so upset the next time she sees it.

Thought maybe some of you with the name of Christmas might like to know this
piece of information. And then again, maybe everyone knew it except me.
When I was in high school and worked in Danner's Dime store, I (on
occassion-when I was in a hurry to get back to work after taking the time to
make some purchases) would sign my name Mary Xmas. I thought the manager
would be impressed that I was in such a hurry to get back on the job, but
instead he informed me that I was trying to take Christ out of Christmas.
Gee, I thought I was only signing my name. IT WASN'T THE REAL THING!
If any of you have experienced the same thing, now you will know the real
story when you read the rest of this letter.
Merry Christmas-------Merry Xmas if you are familiar with Greek.

WHY IS THE WORD CHRISTMAS ABBREVIATED AS XMAS?
Because the Greek letter x is the first letter of the Greek
word for Christ, Xristos. The word xmas, meaning "Christ's
Mass," was commonly used in Europe by the sixteenth century.
It was not an attempt to take Christ out of Christmas.
--part1_0.47bec56a.257eaddc_boundary--
Hope all of you are doing well. This subject is out of our guidelines, not
about our Christmas surname, but could affect the computers we use to
research our surname. I do not pay much attention to the numerous virus
warnings, as most of them are a hoax. Recently however, I have read several
articles regarding the potential Y2K problems and hackers gearing up with
viruses for the millennium.
According to one article, some software companies are taking the virus
attacks so seriously, they are offering free virus scans for the next 30-60
days. I do not recall all of the names, but I think Microsoft Network was
one and probably Norton & McAfee would be others.
One virus mentioned in today's issue of USA Today, disguises itself as a
picture sent from a friend that uses the Outlook e-mail program. Another
one comes as a message from a friend, with a file attachment. It seems
these viruses can attached itself to your address book, and will be sent
along with your e-mail inserting their text message as coming from a
friend, and the picture or file attachment, which contains the virus. When
you open the picture or file, it places the virus on your hard drive to
open on a certain date (Jan. 1, 2000) and also attaches itself to your
email addresses. The virus, supposedly will destroy your hard drive. The
Outlook e-mail program is just the one mentioned in the article, but any
e-mail program can send/receive the virus.
The general consensus from these articles was to update your virus program,
one said on a daily basis. I use an on-line virus program, not as much as I
should because it is slow and a real pain, but I will use it more for the
next 30 days.
For the next 30 days or so, you might want to consider confirming with the
sender, of any message that contains a picture or file, that they actually
sent it. It is a shame there are mean spirited people in the world that
would create a program like this, but evidently there are.
Herbert
Herbert,
So, just relax and enjoy life! :-)
Tell us more about the on- line Virus detector or protector?
I have received messages from a 'cousin' and could tell it was not from him.
It has happened at least twice. I know what he uses in his Subject: and
know it's not from him. I let him know and then delete
What do you know...lmy husband just brought in a package from Herbert Turner!
I'll check it out! Many many thanks!
