I am happy to tell you of this new Christmas line; it was sent to me by Bev
Christmas Hurni and a couple of her cousins, one in England and one in
Canada. It covers 9-10 generations and starts 1610 in Landbeach,
Cambridgeshire, England with William Christmas and wife, Mercy Custerton.
They are hopeful, as we are, of making a family connection. I do not have a
link from the home page as yet, will work on it later this week; you can
access the information at the following address:
http://members.aol.com/herbnet/christmas/t1609.html
Cindy,
No information on William Howard & Amanda Christmas, but am going to give a
guess on the one below.
A few weeks ago, received a message from Benny Raffield, working on his
Raffield line, but wanted to know about Maudie Raffield & James Nathan
Christmas, Maudie is James 2nd wife; had no Christmas info and did not know
if James Nathan existed.
James & Maudie were the parents of Elbert Daniel Christmas, b. 1895 - d.
1984 in Miami; this Nathan was born 1900, which would make age right.
Benny Raffield stated he was going to Fitzgerald later this year to visit
his grandmother and do some research; will send him copy of these messages
and maybe he can confirm some of this.

I need your help in adding more details, such as dates, place of birth,
death and cemetery information to the web page. If you have any of this
information for a family or a person, please share it with me so I can
include it; someday, a child, grandchild or great grandchild will
appreciate it.
Family research is a hobby of ours, we do it for our own satisfaction and
to help others. Cemetery information is very important to me as I have had
a lot of problems locating some of my ancestors. Think about it sometime,
do your kids or grandkids know where your parents or grandparents are
buried. I knew where my mother's parents were buried, but not where my
Turner/Christmas grandparents were buried in SC and nothing on my great
grandparents. The following is a couple stories about some of my problems
locating where my ancestors were buried.
My mother passed away when I was 18 years old and her brother and sisters
passed away before I took up genealogy as a hobby about 10 years ago. I
knew my mother, an uncle, two aunts and my grandparents were buried in
Pineview Cemetery in Rocky Mount, NC, but nothing about other family or my
great grandparents. My cousins were not much help as all of my mother's
brothers and sisters, except one, lived in other states.
To shorten the story, I finally found a 85 year old second cousin of my
mother, who remembered an area where one set of my great grandparents were
buried in an old family cemetery. For health reasons, she could not go with
me, but the cemetery was off Hunter Hills Rd. in Nash Co., NC. She probably
had not been out that way in years, but as with most towns/cities, a lot of
development had taken place. After two trips and several hours of driving
around and visiting a few cemeteries, I was very disappointed, thinking an
office building or store was sitting on top of my grandparents.
I kept coming back to a medical office building parking area to recheck my
city/county map. Across the street, in a corn field, was small (3-4)
cluster of scrub trees I had noticed several times over the two days. To be
honest, I did not want to go to those trees in the corn field; it was June,
very hot and I am scared to death of snakes. Finally, I got a golf club out
of the trunk and went tip toeing through the corn field to those trees.
Naturally, when I got to the trees, the area under them was covered with
bush, briars and honeysuckle vines. I tried to push some vines apart with
the golf club without walking in; I did not realize how short a golf club
is. I pushed the vines & briars apart the best I could and took my first
step, knowing a snake was going to bit me at any moment. A few feet beyond
my outstretch golf club, I thought I saw something that might be a
headstone. I really did not want to go any further, just want to get out of
the briars and vines and back into my car with some cool A/C. Finally,
remembering what someone told me about making a lot of noise and stomping
your feet will make a snake get out of your way, which I did not believe, I
jumped up and down several times, made as much noise as possible and headed
toward what might be a headstone.
As I approached, I pushed the briars and vines away from the stone and
there was a name, Lucie A. Ricks Barnes, my great grandmother. I cannot
describe how happy I was; got a cold chill, not because of snakes as I had
forgotten them, but from the special feeling of being there. Under some
other vines, I found my great grandfather, some of their children and
several large rocks, which were obviously unmarked graves. Two of the
unmarked graves might/probably be my great-great and ggg-grandfathers as I
have tracked, by deeds, this parcel of land from it's original Nov. 10,
1757 grant from Earl Granville to Jacob Barnes.
I contacted the land owners and got permission to get the cemetery cleaned
up; also told them it was my family and gave them my address and telephone
number. I have taken my kids to visit and also contacted several cousins
and told them of the location; at least one has since visited the cemetery.
I make a point of visiting the cemetery and keeping the bush, briar and
vines controlled; salt and Roundup does a good job.
To say the least, I was lucky to have found the graves of these great
grandparents, parents of my grandmother Eatmon. My grandfather Eatmon's
mother was just as lost to me, but was just a few headstones away from her
son. My grandfather's dad died young and his mother remarried; I had
finally found her second husband's name, but that was about it.
Again I was lucky; a few years ago, Pineview Cemetery put their records on
computer and I stop at the caretaker's building; he was fussing about the
computer (it was new to him) and he let me play with it; it took about 5
minutes and sure enough, my great grandmother was buried in Pineview. Now
my cousins know this and my kids have also visited her grave and taken
flowers.
These are two success stories, but I have some failures also, because no
one kept the family information or it was lost over time. We all have lost
ancestors, due to burial in family plots on farms, which have not been
plowed under or overgrown, or to burial in cemeteries that no one remembers.
I know everyone is busy, but drop me a note, by private e-mail, and give me
what you can; if you remember the cemetery and not the dates, give me the
cemetery and we can add the dates later.
Thanks a lot.
Herbert
Herbert....
Thank you so much for sharing your story of finding your ancestor's graves;
very well told.
I thought I would offer some more Florida Christmas information. The following
is a listing of CHRISTMAS deaths in Florida, as taken from the Florida Death
Index. Perhaps it must might help someone.
It is in death date order. I have the file in Excel and it can easily be
sorted by county/given name. Just let me know if you are interested and I'll
happily email the file to you.
Cindy
The codes are not that accurate. I think when they entered them they just kept
using "1" for most, no matter the gender. But, FWIW here they are:
1= White Male
2= White Female
3= Black Male
4= Black Female
There were more codes (Indian, Asian), but none of these were used.

Sorry Ginger and Kay,
I have other Elizabeths but not one work in to this time period... One was
born in 1726 and the rest I have were in 1800's...
Just might be the other CHRISTMAS line..
Good Luck Kay,
Shirl
