There were 5 Christie (Israel - OK; Jennie - OK; Lucy; Rachel - OK; and
Sol - OK) on the Miller Cherokee Roll (Rejected). I assume some are
on the accepted roll, but I do not have it. There were many people
falsely rejected. Their applications, rejected or not, state their
ancestry and why they feel they were of Cherokee descent.
The table of contents of a new academic study of the roll is at

The site also has on-line the surname index of "Starr's Old Cherokee
Families and Their Genealogy," a Cherokee Genealogy Tutorial which is a
great primer on how to do effective Indian genealogy research, the 1835
Cherokee census which is within the tutorial, other indexes, and two
Native American CDs which appear to contain huge amounts of Native
American genealogical material. Very fascinating.

Dear Tom: Could I draw your attention to the Christies of Skateraw
website, below, which has some background, at least as far back as Glen
Christie in the Dee Valley, which indicates it is a fairly old Scottish
or Pictish name, but I haven't yet come up with any Irish connection. Our
best chance is for DNA testing to come up with the answer. Nor am Iall
that sure also that it means Christian, it could be derived from the
Greek 'the annointed one' - but I doubt we'll ever find out

Dear Listers:
The Christie surname is thought to be one of the few Pictish names which have survived, the Picts' language having been supplanted by Gaelic when an Irish tribe, called the Scots, conquered Pictland ( now Scotland) under their King Kenneth MacAlpin.
Christie means Christian. It was Gaelicized to Mac Criostaidh and then anglicized to Christie.
When the Scots emigrated to Ireland in the 1600s, ironically, they were returning home after eight centuries in Scotland.
Sincerely,
Tom Brown

What country (Ireland?) did the Christie name come from?
