Hi Candy, thanks - let's move that info to the other thread. I just posted there. FYI I can't use that link, don't know why. I am not good at troubleshooting computer problems, ooch.

Here is that thread:
http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.christensen/448/mb.ashx
I have never found her parents listed on anything, and she would never talk about them either. She did marry in Utah, and in 3 sources, she has claimed 3 different immigration years. LOL. Here is a link to her in my tree so you can see what I have and what I mean.

HI Candy, I'm happy that some of this discussion was helpful! Let's try to track Minnie back to Denmark. Do you mind starting your own thread, as this one belongs to a different family and it could get confusing to discuss both in the same thread. In traditional Danish naming "Christensen" just means somebody with a father name Christen, so people of that same surname might not be any more related than two people with a father named Jeff or Mike, for example. Danes were gradually switching over to permanent family surnames (I'll call them USA-style surnames for convenience) throughout the 1800s, so on the face of it we can't know if Minnie's father was Christen or not.
To find Minnie in Denmark we need to know whether Christensen is her married name or maiden name. If she had a middle name or middle initial, let us know. Names of her husband and children, date of immigration, etc. would be helpful. Her death record or marriage record or obit should tell her parents names so would be great to know what success you've had tracking those down. Very helpful if you'll tell as much as you can about her.
Minnie is usually short for Vilhelmine.

Thank you for explaining the naming customs in Denmark! When I saw this subject, I related to wanting to connect to somebody....anybody! My gggrandmother came from Denmark, and has been a brick wall for me for 14 years. Her name was:
Minnie Christensen
Birth 20 JUL 1876 in Denmark
Death 1 MAY 1959 in Pendelton, Or
Is Minnie a proper name, or nickname for a more formal name commonly?
Still stumped on who she belongs to, however, I match a gazillion people on DNA for so many other common names like Neilsen and Jensen...ect. I never knew how many Minnie Christensens there are!

The marriage record for Niels Andersen Carstensen gives his father as having the same name -
Niels Andersen Carstensen - and mother --?-- Nielsdatter (or Nielsen). The birth record for Niels hasn't been posted here yet.
I wonder if there's a mistake in the marriage record, as this looks like Niels, below, in the 1845 census. This location is Løgumkloster parish * in Tønder, Højer og Lø herred * in Tønder amt * Denmark in the former duchy of Schlesvig.
1845
Tønder, Tønder, Højer og Lø, Løgumkloster, Strasse Starup No: 87, Hufenstelle, 82, FT-1845, C7559

Kjesten Nielsen 50 Verheir. Seine Frau Lintrup A. Hadersleben

That's right - that family tree I posted does not show the whole family; it doesn't list Frederik.
You were previously visited by the amazing J Murphy who researched in Danish church books (where Danish births, marriages, deaths and more were recorded). I can tell the family tree (which is not an original source) matches the family she found in the original sources.
J Murphy found records for:
1) Caroline Carstensen born Abild, Tønder Amt. Parents Frederik Wilhelm Carstensen and Maria Andersen.
2) Caroline's parents Frederik and Maria Andersen married in 1885 in Abild parish, Tonder amt. The marriage record lists Frederik's parents as Niels Andersen Carstensen and Jacobine Jacobsen.
3) Frederik's parents Niels and Jacobine married in 1849 in Logumkloster parish, Tonder amt. The marriage record says Niels was born 23 March 1823.
4) Given that birth date, J Murphy found Niels's birth record. His parents were Niels Andersen Carstensen and --?--(illegible) Nielsdatter.
5) I posted an online family tree for a Niels Anderson Carstensen who was born 23 Mar 1823 to parents Niels Anderson Carstonson and Karen Nielsen and married a bride Jacobine Jacobsen and died in Logumkloster parish, Tonder amt.
J Murphy's findings and the family tree are identical. J Murphy did not (not yet anyway) investigate the children of Niels Anderson Carstensen and Jacobine Jacobsen except for Frederik, as that is your line. Usually, if the Original Poster does not show up to respond to posted findings, the research stops and waits until the Original Poster has time to return to the project.
"Nielsdatter" and "Nielsen" are equivalent names.
"Jacobsdatter" and "Jacobsen" are also equivalent.
Does that help?

Thank you for the information provided, its getting interesting and exciting. The Niels Anderson Carstensen and Jacobine Jacobsdatter site you gave I do not see where Frederik Carstensen was a child. It gets very confusing, name changes and many named the same.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Bits and pieces for now....
Caroline Carstensen born Abild, Tønder Amt. Parents Frederik Wilhelm Carstensen and Maria Andersen.
Frederik William Carstensen and Maria Andersen were married on March 14 1885 in Abild parish. According to the marriage record Frederik's parents were Niels Andersen Carstensen and Jacobine Jacobsen.
Niels Andersen Carstensen married Jacobine Jacobsen in Logumkloster parish, Tonder Amt on Jan 30 1849. According to that marriage record Niels Andersen Carstensen was born on March 23 1823. His parents were Niels Andersen Carstensen and _____ (? will have to look for his birth record - can't read his mother's 1st name) Nielsdatter. Jacobine Jacobsen was born Nov 24 1825 in Malt parish, Ribe Amt.
(I'm fairly sure that this family has been discussed on the message boards before. You might try searching for those messages)
Anyway....I think that this is your Hans August Johansen registering to emigrate in 1903:
Name: Johansen, Hans Aug. Occupation: Smed
Age: 21 Destination: N.Y.
Contract no.: 243500 Registration date: 6/17/1903
Birth place: Girslev Birth place: Gierslev
Last res. parish: Gierslev Last res. county: Holbæk
Last residence: Løve Destination country: USA
Destination city: New York City Destination state: New York State
Name of ship: Hellig Olav
IDcode: D0103J6916
I found his birth/baptism record in Gierslev parish, Holbaek Amt. According to that record his parents were Lars Peter Johansen and Birthe Kirstine Nielsen.
It seems that Tjørnelunde was actually in Finderup parish in Holbaek Amt. Below is the 1901 census showing his parents and siblings:
Holbæk, Løve, Finderup, Tjørnelunde, ., 93a, FT-1901, D6318
Name: Age: Marital status: Pos. in household: Occupation: Birth place:
Lars Peder Johansen 1853 07/29 G Husfader Tækkemand Skaftelev
Kirstine Johansen 1850 03/04 G Husmoder Tjørnelunde, Finderup Sogn Holbæk Amt
Maren Johansen 1888 08/10 U Tjørnelunde, Finderup Sogn Holbæk Amt
Jens Johansen 1891 07/31 U Tjørnelunde, Finderup Sogn Holbæk Amt
Peetrar Johansen 1893 09/17 U Tjørnelunde, Finderup Sogn Holbæk Amt
Hope this helps,
J Murphy
