Hi
I am replying to your message. Sorry for the delay but I have been working (a curse but it pays the bills). You are correct - I don't read Norwegian.
I will reply to the Norwegian volunteers soon - I was in contact with Uno earlier this year when he answered a post on ancestry and he started the Nilsson tree (Nils married Johanna from Karlshamn Sweden after she came to Australia).
Once again many thanks
Robyn

Good for you! So I visited the Norway forum after reading this, and as you say the volunteers there have identified Niels Peter Emil Christiansen in the census in Norway in 1865 and 1875 and found spouses and children for some of his siblings in subsequent years. Message me privately or here in your thread if you think I can help answer any questions you may have about their findings. You can also ask your questions directly within that thread. I am sure the researchers would welcome hearing from you and knowing that you've received the information they found. Your ongoing interest is a signal to them to continue on with the research. I'm happy for you.
Below is one of their findings, the 1875 census. The meaning of the Norwegian words is roughly as follows:
hf = husfader = father of the house/head of household
kone = wife
d = datter = daughter
s = søn = son
g = gift = married
ug = ugift = unmarried
Stransider Tomtearbeider = a job title; ask the Norwegians about this
Søman = seaman
Arbeider ved det Mekaniske Værksted = a job title; worker with the Mechanical Factory???? (hey, I'm trying)
Birth place = the sogn where the person was born. A sogn is a parish. A parish had civil as well as religious functions (for example, births, marriages, deaths, etc. were recorded by the pastor in the parish recordbook). So that's a little like telling the county in USA where you were born, without mentioning the town.
1875 Census
Fredrikstad, Norway
Address: 512 Trosvigstranden (it's a triplex)
Christian Nilsen hf g Stransider Tomtearbeider born 1826 Skjebr Sogn
Maren Andria Pederdatter kone g born 1826 in Onsø Sogn
Helmine Anette Christiansdatter d ug born 1852 Fredrikstad
Nils Petter Emil Christiansen s ug Søman b 1854 Onsø Sogn
Ole Søvrin Christiansen s ug Søman b 1857 Fredrikstad
Karel Julius Christiansen [like Karl] Arbeider ved det Mekaniske Værksted born 1860 Fredrikstad
Marensius Christinsen s born 1862 Onsø Sogn
Augusta Christiansdatter d born 1870 Onsø Sogn
So the above census discovers a new sibling for Niels Peter, Augusta. Cool.

Thank you for the Norwegian website. I have joined and posted a forum and have had replies already. Still reading all the information. It would be great if there are any living relatives but will be hard to find.
Robyn
