Crystal, I was just browsing and saw your response to my mother (Kathryn Cooper) about your great grandfather, George Christiansen. His father was Barnard Christiansen who died in the 1890's, and his mother Amelia Halberdier later married Douglas Shepherd. Anyway, I met your great grandfather George when I was about 9 in 1970 or so. He was visiting his brother Fred Christiansen (my grandfather) in San Benito, TX. They looked very much alike--it was like I was seeing two Grandpas. I'd like to share some information with you some time.

Christiansen is a patronymic surname in Norway. Before early in this century - the people of Norway did not use 'surnames' - they were identified by their father's given name and the word suffix 'sen/son' or 'datter/dotter'.
The son (let's call him Bjorn) of a man known as Christian or Kristian would be known as Bjorn Christiansen (His sister Ingrid would be known as Ingrid Christiansdatter). If he lived at a farm that was called 'Tvedt' he could also have been called Bjorn Tvedt or Bjorn Christiansen Tvedt. If Bjorn's paternal grandfather had the given name Hans - then Bjorn's father would have been identified as Christian Hansen. Women did not change their names when they married, Ingrid Christiansdatter would be known as Christiansdatter all of her life.
If you have an authentically Norwegian heraldry crest you have something quite rare. It was usually only a royal or noble family that ever had a coat of arms in Norway and many of those with such heraldry were actually from other countries - such as Germany or Denmark. Also those families did not often use the patronymic naming patterns!
If you want to track your family history - you'll need to know the names and vital dates for your immigrant ancestors. Who in the family left Norway? when were they born? when did they leave Norway? does any family lore survive about where in Norway they lived? or who their parents were? Early records where they joined churches after emigrating might have recorded the name of the Norwegian parish(es) where they had been baptised. Censuses done in their new land may record the year they came to that new country.... etc.
