My gr-gr-great grandmother was Emma Christian who was married to Richard McGriff, and I have been looking for the names of her parents, which, from your post, am assuming were Nicholas T. Christian and Margret Wilson? Can you please share more information on this family line with me? I have had the hardest time tracking down any information on her. Thanks in advance!
Stephanie

My first ancestor to come to America in 1657 was Thomas Christian b.abt. 1636 at Douglas, IOM.d. 1694 in Charles City, VA in 1694.
I have never been able to connect him with the Tazwell Christians.
Many or his desendents went to Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas and New York.etc

Barbara- Thanks for the reply.. I was aware of the connection between William and Allen.... William moved to Madison County Alabama quite awhile after Allen.... it appears from estate records that William appeared in Huntsville sometime after Allen's death to sell his share of Allen's estate to someone by the name of Ewing (may have been executor I do not recall)... Thereafter William and Anne appear in Madison County Alabama and my guess is they took the $ from Allen's estate and bought land in Madison County....
My big question has always been who are the parents of Allen Christian ? We know he was in Tennessee before Alabama but beyond that who knows... there are SO MANY Allen Christians out there ..... in my family line alone... my grandfather William Allen, an Uncle Robert Allen, a cousin Charles Allen and my brother John Allen.... makes me wonder if there is not a connection somewhere to an Allen family surname... ie a Christian married a woman with Allen as her surname.... perhaps time will tell.
I have my ancestry dna results back and show many matches with descendants of William Christian but as I do not know the parentage of Allen nothing shows there....Strangely I did show a distant match to a man named Christian from the Isle of Man... his Christian Manx ancestors came to the US much later than ours... I think I recall almost all of his lines came to the US in the late 1890s.. I suppose I should check to see if this guy has a solid tree back in time on his Christian line...
I post this in hopes someone else may read and have something to contribute...
Donald Christian

Thanks for the reply. My husband (also a genealogist) has always leaned toward #2 or some variation of it. And I will not be disappointed to find no NA blood in my DNA results. It doesn't matter to me one way or the other except to help me learn a bit more about where I came from. The more I read this thread, the more fascinated I became with just the the idea of having more knowledge - another piece of the puzzle, as it were.
Is there another thread on this board where we talk about how we are related, exchange information, etc.? I don't want to clutter this one any more.

A lot of us came into this search believing our family's oral history and assuming that TBC was given the surname "Christian" by his adoptive father Thomas Mastin. Personally, I thought he gave him that name to make him seem more Anglicized or after a famous military figure to make him seem patriotic and to fit into the white culture. Now, with the DNA information that Kennith Simpson has so generously shared with us, we know for a fact that TBC's DNA matches people named Christian. So he has to be a descendant of a Christian with Haplogroup R1b1a2 yDNA (I hope I got that haplogroup right, I am pressed for time. I know it is R.) It is possible that TBC could be Native American with an R Haplogroup because it is the second most common Haplogroup among Native Americans after Q. (And I believe this means that your Native American Ancestor inter-married with a European either before coming to America or after.) But we know his name is Christian, so that would have to mean, if TB!
C is Native American, that a Christian male inter-married with Native Americans along the way somewhere. Personally I believe there is not enough information yet to come to a conclusion. We do not know what Cornstalk's DNA looks like. It is possible that he could be a descendant of a very early Christian. We believe Cornstalk is a descendant of an early European named Carpenter. What if that person was really a Christian whose trade was carpentry? We have so little information at this time. I don't even know the DNA of a single full-blooded Shawnee. Could they be heavily mixed with R ydna like the Cherokee and Ojibwa? So the way I see it there are a few possibilities and only time will tell.
1. Cornstalk is descended from a European with surname Christian.
2. TBC was from the Virginia Christian family, kidnapped as a child, raised as Shawnee and believed he was Native American.
3. Someone in the Christian family made EVERYTHING up.
I think these all have pretty much the same possibility. I am leaning towards #2, but I hope to find out #1 is true. I am also going to start collecting any stories I can find of people completely making their heritage up. I know a couple of notorious examples but I haven't heard of any common ones. I just find the whole thing fascinating, however it turns out. We do know that DNA is proving that our little group of people did inter-marry with Native Americans. Of course they did! The Sizemores having Haplogroup Q is one example. But if you are looking to find confirmation in your maternal percentages you will be disappointed because it was just too far back to carry any NA DNA to the present. (Unless of course your ancestors continued to inter-marry with full-blooded Native Americans. Many of our ancestors did not.)
Thanks for joining the thread I started!

Forgive me for asking this if it was answered elsewhere in this thread (I did read it all and didn't recall seeing it), but are The Christian Family Chronicles still published? If so, whom do you contact about subscribing?

I have read this thread with great interest, as I have just recently confirmed that I am a TBC descendant. Do I understand that our genealogy line now stops at TBC and does not extend into the NA ancestors? And that now the focus has shifted to how TBC got to Tazewell County and whom his Christian ancestors are?
I have not yet taken a DNA test, but will take one now soon. Mine *may* throw a wrench into this little group, as it very well could show some NA heritage. But my NA stories have come from my paternal grandmother's line (Bailey/Hagerman) not my paternal grandfather's (Christian/Harrison). Of course, again, it could just be family lore. We know how these stories start *rolls eyes*.
I returned recently from a trip to the Tazewell area, where my Christian/Harrison branch throws an annual family reunion in Thompson Valley. For those of you who haven't visited, you should. It is a beautiful part of our country. Our ancestors chose well when they picked a place to settle.
Rose Ann (who descends from TBC through Moses, then Samuel)

Last night I found a transcribed birth record for James H. Christian, listing Samuel and Mary Christian as his parents and providing the birth date of July 7, 1874. On his World War I Draft Registration Card, James Davenport Christian provides the same birth date of July 7, 1874 in his own handwriting. I am now convinced that James H. and James Davenport are the same person and that either he was given more than one middle name or that the "H" has been misread. I am excited to move forward with this branch of my family tree!

I have just noticed your post. I am actually descendant. Joseph married Mary Ann Roeger, they had a son, named Joseph as well. Joseph had a son named Robert James Christian, who is my father.
All of them are buried at St. Clements Cemetary in Dunlap
That ground was donated to the church by Wilhem and Maria Roeger, Mary's parents

I am finally convinced, after much pulling of hair and gnashing of teeth and the discovery of some lovely official records here on Ancestory, that James Davenport Christian (JUL 7 1874 - AUG 27, 1921) is my paternal great-grandfather. There had been a misconception among some of my family members that his name was James Daniel, not James Davenport, but I am now convinced otherwise. He married Mary Elizabeth Harrison (MAR 13 1877 - DEC 1963). I am particularly excited because on a trip to the Christian/Harrison cemetery (I don't know the official name for it) at Thompson Valley last month, I discovered my great-grandfather has no headstone. I will now be able to put one up for him with the correct information. My father had planned to do so, but fell ill and died before he was able to accomplish this.
Can anyone provide concrete evidence as to who James' parents were? I have seen two potential sets of parents mentioned on other's trees, but no one seems to have any written documentation to support either claim. I would love to get this branch of my tree moving forward!
Thanks for any help.
Rose Ann (Christian) Jenny
