Hi all,
I just found this thread. I am a descendant of Hezekiah Whitt and Rachel Skaggs. Rachel is thought by some to be a daughter of Cornstalk and thus related to your TBC. I am familiar with the writing of James Red Wolf. I am also a relative of members of the Webb family. I heard long before the internet that we had Cherokee ancestors from someone on that side of the family. If Rachel's mother was a Cherokee, then she would have self identified as a Cherokee because the society was matrilineal. I have not found the documents that show her name change but I am going to be taking some DNA tests in the future to see what I can find out about my connection to Cornstalk. Any advice? I will let you know if I find out anything useful. It may be awhile before I can get this done but I am anxious to get answers.

We can say with authority that TBC was not NA through his father's side from your results (although it would be good to have more Christian males to compare DNA with). But we can't really rule out that he was not a descendant of Cornstalk until we know what Cornstalk's DNA looks like. What if Cornstalk was a kidnapped Christian? Or Elinipsico? All we know about what Cornstalk looked like is that he was very tall and he had long white hair in his latter years. That's all we know really. He had so many wives he MUST have some verified descendants out there that we could see their DNA. I'm really curious. It is my understanding that Native Americans are not getting their DNA tested, generally speaking, because, for one thing - what if you had it tested and you were more European than you thought? To some people that would be devastating. And some people may lose rights they had gained from registering with a tribe. Or be afraid they may lose rights. So it's difficult. And it is!
my hunch that the Virginia Indians intermarried with Spanish, Scottish, Scandanavian explorers for years before first contact. And then with the Longhunters. But I won't know until more NAs are tested. I'm not trying to be difficult. I think it is entirely possible that we could learn about Cornstalk's descendants and then we would have the whole picture.
Your results do rule out the possibility that Elinipsico had an Indian wife. He must not have if he was the father of TBC. And if he was a kidnapped CHristian I don't see him living with the tribe with a white wife. He would have married an Indian woman. And Cornstalk had white wives, or one at least, but I think his other wives were Indian or Indian/African-American, so that would have to show up in TBC's DNA and it does not. So I don't know. Still want to see EVERYONE's DNA! I want to see the whole picture : )

Just an update. I received an e-mail from 23andMe that they have received my samples and are in the process stage, hopefully it won't be too much longer. God news is that Ancestry.com has readjusted it's findings on the Ancestry.com Ethnicity test to be more in line with that of other testing agencies. That will make it much easier to compare results. For my Ancestry.com updated results see the other Thread for Hunches etc.

As we all know Ancestry.com had in the past given a fairly simple Ethnicity breakdown in their calculations for their Ethnicity tests.
I tried to share that breakdown with as many people interested in the Christian family, especially pertaining to Thomas Bailey Christian and the Native American connections, as I could. My Y-DNA resulted in no NA DNA connections so I took the BETA test to see what the results would be. The results were somewhat vague overall but left no doubt in my mind that TBC was not Native American on the paternal side. The old was 100% accounted for so there were no unknown factors. But I still felt that thee was a slight possibility that there could be some NA ancestry on the distant maternal side.
The new breakdown by Ancestry.com is a more specific breakdown and I believe it actually is more in tune with my actual family tree. There were a few surprises though, for instance my Scandinavian ancestry dropped from 50% to just 6%. Also on the new breakdown the results even had a area specific to Native American. Keep in mind that the Ethnicity Tests take into consideration both the male and female ancestry. The breakdown shows that I still have 0% Native American DNA. This can only mean that whoever TBC was he was not Native American, It also causes me to have second thoughts about NA ancestry on the maternal side as well.
The new breakdown is: African (Mali) 1%
America North & South 0%
Native American 0%
Asia 0%
Europe 99%
Western Europe 52%, France Germany, Holland, Denmark
Ireland 18% Ireland, Scotland and Wales
Iberian Peninsula 12%, Spain and Portugal
Great Britain 10%
Scandinavian 6%
Finish & N. Russia 1%
Pacific Islands 0%
West Asia 0%
According to what I know about my ancestors, this is a more accurate account than previously recorded by Ancestry.com.
Right now it is still just a hunch, I won't make any calls until my 23andMe test results come in but I am inclined to believe that Thomas Bailey Christian and his direct descendants have no NA blood lines any NA DNA would have to be by marriage only.
You have to keep everything in proper perspective though. This is my DNA results based on my family tree, anyone descending from a different maternal branch may yet possess NA DNA. but not on the paternal side.

No problem, it is important to get the information out there so others can contribute, especially in a thread like this where hunches and thoughts are encouraged. When push comes to shove we probably get our best information etc. through other peoples hunches.
It appears that most DNA sites are now leaning toward Ethnicity testing and letting the Y-DNA and MTDNA fall to the way side. I am getting a number of BETA matches that continue to support my family line. I just got two new matches that include the Beaver's family which are directly linked to the Christian family.
What really baffles me now is that I get so many links that support my findings with dozens of matches, yet everyone seems to be stalled with the question of just who Thomas Bailey Christian really was, and the question of NA ancestry. Yet with all of these connections so far not one link has been able to provide any thing more than a hunch or oral tradition. With so many families involved you would think that at least one or two would have family Bibles or other documents that would support the claims. Until we get more descendants from this Christian family that are willing to take the tests we may never get to the bottom of it all.
Now for the good news. I received word to day that 23andMe has finally received my DNA sample and will begin the process of testing it. The bad news is (and as I have said before I am not a patient man), I have been advised that it will take 4 to 6 weeks for the results to get posted to my 23andMe page. From what I have read this test should break down the results much better and give me a better look at any possible NA ancestry.
With my Y-DNA test I honestly did not expect any NA DNA to show up. I do expect a small amount to show up in my 23and Me test because it does both the male and female lines differently than how Ancestry.com does. Because of my ancestry including such names as Skaggs, Whitt, Elkins, Christian etc. I do expect to see a small amount of NA DNA.

Women (who don't have the ydna) and men who are descendants of TBC but not in the direct line are really indebted to you, Ken, for taking the time to post your results so we all have a better understanding of who we are. Thank you!
Catherine

For those following this thread I wanted to let you know that I have started a new thread pertaining to the Christian/Simpson DNA testing. I began the new thread because it will pertain to a diff. DNA test. Everything on this thread pertains to the Ancestry.com Y-DNA and BETA test. The new thread will pertain to the results of the 23andMe DNA test. I did not want to get the two tests confused.
My first reply's on the new thread will pertain to the actual results of the new test as if it were the only test taken. I will then start a new thread comparing the results of the two tests. I agree with Catherine's idea of opening the threads up to hunches and just any thoughts anyone has on the matter. So feel free to contribute to all the threads.
I just received word from 23andMe that the test has been shipped to me and I should get it soon.
Hopefully it won't take long for me to get the results. I will share any and all results that pertain to our research..
