I have 70 documents on Turner Christian (1750 VA-1833 GA). His father was Charles and they all trace back to Thomas whose first patent was in 1657. Turner had an uncle named Turner Hunt Christian but our Turner did not have a middle name. Turner accidentially shot and killed his wife, Anna Payne, on 25 April 1787. Depositions from inquest held in Goochland Co. are on microflim at LVA. He was acquitted in court held in Richmond. (Ancestry is incorrect in saying that Anna died in GA in 1833.) In Oct. 1788, he married Elizabeth Penn Leake. John Christian and Turner co-signed the bond. Land records show Turner living in Elbert Co. GA in 1793. Turner and Elizabeth had children that have not been documented. By a preponderance of evidence, it is safe to assume that Elijah L. Christian (b. 28 July 1794 in Elbert Co.) and Mary M. Christian (b. 1804 & married William H.T. Fitts in 1820) are both children.

Patricia,
I'd appreciate getting the Christian information. You can e-mail it to me at jsapp at me.com. My Christians were (West) Virginia, and Lawrence County, Ohio. No telling where they went after Ohio.
TIA,

There are no locations in the book. I think my mother got the book at an estate or garage sale in Newago MI but not sure. It may be a family book but she was in early stage of altzheimers when I asked about the book in the 70's. You indicate an ancestor in Monroe County. Do you have by chance any connections to Magnans from Canada or Werts from PA? The Magnan family immigrated from Montreal Canada in the late 1800's. Not sure about the Wert family, I think they came from PA or NY. I scanned the pages in the book and wrote up the names. Sarah was the last of 14 children born Oct 11,1833 - not your ancestor by the date. Some entries are clear but some of the ink was very faded. I am not able to attach the files as they are in pdf and word format. If you want them I will need to send them via email.

Does the book indicate where this couple lived? I would be interested if there is a New York state connection. My Christian connection is a Sally (possibly a nickname for Sarah) Christian who married Allison Webb in New York. Sally and Allison's daughter, Miranda, was born in 1827 near Peekskill, NY, and married Hiram Leonard in Monroe County, Michigan.

Hi, Carol--From what I know, my Christian ancestor who was from VA was born in Goochland, VA, in 1873, though he died in Elbert County, GA.(1833). However, his name was Turner Christian, not Thomas Christian--to my knowledge there is no Thomas Christian in my direct family tree. Given the time period and the place, I think it's certainly possible that Turner Christian owned slaves (yes, I am white), but I really have no specific information about that. Until recently I knew very little about my dad's family, and what I have is really just taken from others' trees. I just haven't yet had time to look into any original sources. Sorry I can't be more help. I do believe there were lots of people named Christian in Virginia during the late 1700s and 1800s, some quite prominent and wealthy, and there are a lot of repeated names, but connections further back than Turner Christian (1750-1833) are murky and unsure.
Good luck in your ongoing research...

What part of Virginia was your ancestor Thomas Christian from?
I have an ancestor from VA with the same name. He was an ex-slave, born in Hanover County. I am assuming your ancestor was white. Did he own slaves?
