I reviewed my information about William Payne Christian and can add my interpretation to the guardianship question. I found estate settlement papers [dated 1855-1856]for Charles Woodson Christian who I'm 99% sure was the brother of your William Payne Christian. The administrators for Charles W.'s estate were William P. Christian and Washington Christian. Among his children, Charles W. had Washington [b. 1812], William P. [b. 1828] Charles W.[b. 1830]. plus Josephine E. Christian born in 1838. My copy from microfilm reads, "William P. Christian Junr, guardian for Josephine E. Christian a minor heir of Charles W. Christian Senr. decd. makes the following return to the ordinary [court] of Elbert the first of July 1856" for expenses of $153. I believe the William P. Christian listed as administrator as well as guardian of Josephine was in fact the son of Charles W. Christian rather than his brother because of the use of the word Junr. after his name. Junr. and Senr. were !
commonly used to mean "older" and "younger" and not necessarily "father" and "son". In this case I believe Junr. was used to differentiate between his son William P. and his brother William P. and the use of Charles W. Senr. was to differentiate between father and son. Not that it really matters much.
In Eunice Stacy's book "Christian of Charles City" is very well researched and she says that William Payne Christian died 7 Mar 1861 in Elbert Co., GA. She also shows that his daughter, Elizabeth C. Christian, married Martin Bond 6 Aug 1835 in Elbert Co. and I believe that this is who William P. was living with in 1850 even though it was spelled M. and E. Bonn.
I have lots of information if you want more. shdillon(a)indy.rr.com.

Dear Carole Lynn,
I believe you e-mailed me about this family back on Feb. 4th, 2008. I do not have a copy of Alfred Rodman Christian's book on the Christian family. I do have information from Ann Ashworth, a collection of Census data on the Christian family of John Christian and Jane Brower. Phebe/Phoebe Christian did marry Robert Sweet and live in Cayuga County, NY. The Cayuga County Historian's office might be able to help.
To connect yourself to this line work backwards:
Your birth record, naming your parents
Parent's birth record naming your grandparents
Grandparents birth record, if available or death record naming their parents.
Wills naming children, etc. I believe you told me all were born and raised in Cayuga County, NY, so it should be fairly easy until before 1880's and then you will need Wills which record Phebe (Christian) Sweet. The Sweet line also can be connected to the Rev. War.
Here is the information I have on John Christian and Jane Brower:
1.) John Christian b. ca 1700, married Averick Cain and had Richard 24 March 1724, Isle of Man, England.
2.) Richard CHRISTIAN from Isle of Man. Maried Christina unknown. Note on Cayuga County NYGENWEB site someone read old script for Richard as Buhand and Ann Ashworth corrected this error.
3.) JOHN CHRISTIAN (Richard, John)
a.) b. 01 Nov. 1753 Phillipstown, Dutchess Co. N.Y.
b.) 1776 He served as Serg. in the Rev. 7th
Regt. N.Y. Militia commanded by Ludington under Capt. Lane.
c.) REV. WAR pension file #S12700
d.) 1783 On 22 Oct. he purchased 110 acres from the forfeiture of Beverly Robinson; he made a second purchase of 259 more acres.
John Christian and Jane Brower were living in Phillipstown, Dutchess (now Putnam Co.)
e.) 1790 Census; Dutchess Co.Phillipstown
1800 Moved to West Schuyler, Herkimer Co N.Y. then moved to Cayuga Co., NY.
1810 Census Herkimer Co.
1820 Census Cayuga Co. Mentz, NY.
1830 Census Cayuga Co. Mentz
1832 Received pension 20 Sept. 1832 in Mentz, Cayuga Co., NY..
m. ca 1773 JANE BROWER who was b. 22 Feb.1755 d. 14 March 1813
john Christian d. 09 Jan. 1835 Buried at Throop, Cayuga Co., N.Y. in family burying ground.
John Christian, born 1 November 1753, died 9 January 1835, was in the Revolutionary War. He married Jane Brower, born 22 February 1755, died 14 March 1813. They had the following children...(11 all inf. given on each).
"According to REV WAR Pension File S-12700:
John Christian was born in 1 November 1753 in New Rochelle, Westchester Co., New York. He first enlisted for Revolutionary War service about 1777 in Philipstown, Dutchess Co., New York..."

I too am descended from William Payne Christian and Sara Maxwell through daughter Nancy Turner Christian who married John Warren Seymour.
I have seen all types of things family trees that show that Nancy was the daughter of William P. Christian and Sara Maxwell, but I have never seen any real proof.
Do you have any idea where William Payne Christian died. Most people show Elbert Co, GA, but there is nothing in the Elbert Co., estate records that show a will or any probate of the estate. There are several Christians about the supposed time of WPC's death, but no WPC.
There was guardianship granted to WPC of a Christian child in 1860. That was the only WPC reference that I saw.
Do you have any idea where he is buried?
Is it possible that he died in some other nearby county.
In the 1860 Census he was in Elbert Co, with the Bond family, which I believe was his daughter Elizabeth's family.
All help appreciated.
Al Adams
