You mention in a post that you have traced the 'christians's' back to 1750 and i wonder if my family is involved?
My gg grandmother was Elizabeth Christian (1843, Birkenhead), daughter of Patrick Christian (1816 Dublin?). Patrick married Mary Flynn (1813?, Kerry?) in 1842 in Birkenhead. from the marriage cert i know that Patrick's father was Christopher a labourer (ireland i'm assuming, 1790ish maybe??)
Does any of this tie into your christian's?

I have found a will written in 1784 by Susanna WHITNEY in Buckingham Co, VA in which she leaves legacies to her sons, John and George CHRISTIAN and her daughter Elizabeth JARRETT. It appears that this Susanna was married to Jeremiah WHITNEY after having been a widow of a Mr. CHRISTIAN. Does anyone have anymore information on any of these people?

Hi Jeanne,
I'm glad that someone recognized my research on the Whitney/Christian
relationship. Many errors and false assumptions are still being perpetuated.
Prichett has an excellent website and his research is generally good.
My Christian/Whitney material has been boxed since 2005, when I published. I
am taking the liberty of sending you several pages from the Christian
section of my book, Waltons of Old Virginia and Sketches of Families in
Central Virginia. Please cite the source if you plan on using any of the
material. I do not recall seeing an Elkins in the court material. If you
have questions that I can answer, please get back in touch. I am now at the
age and stage of life where research is on a back burner for others to pick
up the torch.

Subject: Research: James Christian and Susannah Whitney
Hi, Mr. Kerns, I am a southern (Bermuda) Whitney and I live in Texas. I was
reading your posting #2012 on Genforum. It's been a few years since you
posted this, but I was wondering if you would have time to discuss this with
me. Your explanation was beautifully written. Probably the only one I have
seen that makes sense. Mr. Prichett that has the website The Virginians
states that the 2 Jeremiah's are father and son, but that creates a big time
line problem for me. The 2 Jeremiah Whitney's and 2 Susannh's in Virginia
have been a confusion for me and a lot of other people for many years. I
believe they are allied family, but I am not familiar enough with Virginia
records to sort it out. The Jeremiah Whitney that married Susannah Rogers
was probably the paternal uncle of the Jeremiah that married Susannah
Christian which would explain the family networking with their lands. The
Jeremiah that married Susannah Christian is probably the son of Joshua of
Bermuda, Virginia and North Carolina. Whitney's have this Jeremiah with a
son Jeremiah and I have documentation of his son probably born about 1725
making the elder Jeremiah's marriage to Susannah Christian his ??second
marriage. I have searched in vain for information on Josiah Whitney of North
Carolina and you have him as Jeremiah's son also, which would make perfect
sense to me, but I have not been able to find any documentation for that
information. There is a Thomas Christian who purchased land on Rabon's Creek
in South Carolina about 1754. This was a SC Whitney neighborhood.
Who is he, do you know ? There is a later law suit about 1785 by a Mary
(Whitney ?) Elkins to claim her 'Uncle Jeremiah Whitney's' estate in
Virginia because he left no heirs. She apparently won the law suit since
she signed the land over to her son in law, but I cannot find it. Her family
just decided that she was a Whitney because she named her son John Whitney
Elkins, but I am not sure that she might have been a Christian. Do you have
a Mary Elkins in that law suit you mentioned ? I have some documentation in
Virginia and South Carolina of an Elkins/Whitney connection, but it eludes
me.
I would be most appreciative of any additional information that you could
share or any suggestions that you have on this confusion. I have worked for
many years trying to sort out these southern Whitney's. Since we didn't
step off onto Plymouth Rock, we are not really important in Whitney circles.
But Samuel Whitney landed in Bermuda in 1619, which is way before the
Mayflower Whitney's landed. We have his family back to the 1400's. My
problem is when Jeremiah Whitney and his brother Joshua Whitney came out of
Bermuda 1700-1720. Then there's a break in the records for a generation and
a few of us are left to match them all up where they belong. Particularly
problematic are Macon and Malcom Whitney that show up in South Carolina
about 1800. Macon has a documented marriage in Washington Co. Virginia 1787
and the Jeremiah from Bermuda lived close to the Macon family in St. Peter's
Parish VA. ?? That's as far as I can get with that connection.
Duplin/Sampson Co. NC was a neighborhood loaded with Malcom's, given and
surnames, due to the Scots that immigrated there. I think Malcom belongs to
Josiah, but I cannot prove that either. Yankees burned Duplin and Sampson
Counties.
Told you I was confused. Thanks for your attention and consideration. Any
suggestions you have would be most appreciated. Best Regards, Jeanne Neilon

Hi Mr. Kerns, it's me again. I know you said that you boxed up your
research, but you are the only one I know that understands this family. I
also thought you might enjoy this. I found some Albemarle Road Orders 1747
that gave me some neighbors of Jeremiah Whitney and I started chasing
families for possible connections. I found that Rebecca Whitney, daughter of
Jeremiah Whitney, lived 'next door' married to John Coleman. That was a
surprise and it got better !!. In researching this family I found this (see
below) in the book "The Coleman Family of Mobjack Bay Gloucester County
Virginia":
______________________________________________________________________
(6)3815 JOHN COLEMAN b. 4 Feb 1722/3 Abingdon Parish, Gloucester Co.
bap. 26 Feb 1722/3 \(Abingdon Parish Register\)
d. by 1782 Buckingham Co. VA
m. Rebecca Whitney
Rebecca Coleman died 1793/taxes, 1794/estate in Buckingham Co. VA. In a
deposition taken at the home of Sarah Burkes on the James River in
Buckingham Co., 29 Aug 1792, Rebecca stated that she was the widow of John
Coleman and that he had built a mill on the land of Jeremiah Whitney./a> 40
years ago (ca. 1752). She also stated that James Christian was the
heir-at-law of his mother, Susannah Whitney Christian. The suit was tried
in Prince Edward Co. in which James Christian sued to gain property as an
heir of his mother, Susannah Christian, daughter of Jeremiah Whitney.
\(Prince Edward District Court, Reel 19, p. 69)
On 4 Sep 1760 \(Henrico, Albemarle\) Susannah Christian, widow of James
Christian who owned 200 acres of land on the north side of Fluvanna, sold
her dower to James Dillard for L40. Witnesses: John Coleman Sr., William
Gilliam.
John Coleman died by 1782, for in that year Rebecca is shown with six slaves
on the Buckingham Co. tax list. From 1782 to 1789, Rebecca is on the tax
list with 80 acres. In 1790, her sons Jesse and Thomas each gave her 10
acres. From 1790 until her death in 1793, Rebecca is on the tax list with
100 acres. That same year of 1793 is the last year Jesse and Thomas are on
the list.

So, I picked myself up off the floor and copied and pasted this to you.
Sorry about the background. It came with the cut and paste out of the
book. I will be contacting the Prince Edward Court tomorrow. All their
records are on film. I guess they can copy from the film. Maybe there's
more to this lawsuit also. I guess it could have been mis-interpreted or
transcribed in error, but that's why you always go to the originals. If
this is correct, it sure begs more questions than it answers.
Mercy, I am totally confused at this point. Best regards, Jeanne Neilon in
Texas

Message Board Post:
I am looking for genealogy information on the John Christian family. John Christian was born 1792 VA. John Christian's wife was Amy or Ann. He may have also been married to a Delinda Wallace.
His children were as follows:
Lucinda b. 1822 SC, William W b. 1822 SC, James b. 1823 SC, Mary b. 1833 AL, John b. 1836 AL, Caroline b. 1840 AL, Louisa A b. 1842 AL, Pertamy b. 1852 AL, and Thomas W. b. 1853 AL.
In 1850 census sons James and William Christian are both living and working in Washington, Pontotoc, Mississippi, with a John Washington b. 1806 SC living in their household in Pontotoc county. John Washington had come from Alabama and had 3 daughters: Martha b. 1834 AL, Mary b. 1837 AL and Susan b. 1844 AL.
Also in 1860 census I find John Christian living in Eastern Division, Walker, Alabama.
Finally in 1850 census I find John Christian living in District 2, Tuscaloosa, Alabama with a Leachy Washington in the household age 4 born AL.
I always thought that my Washington family were related to John Washington who was found in the Christian brothers household in Pontotoc, MS in 1850 but I never could prove this (My George Washington b. 1821 family arrived about 1858 in the Pontotoc MS area from Coosa/Elmore Cos. AL). But now we have a 25/25 YDNA test match to the Christian surname, specifically Matthew Campbell Christian b. 1772 Augusta Co., VA; died 1853 Union Co., KY.
So I am trying to connect Matthew Campbell Christian and John Christian. I've learned that both of these Christian families have ties to the 1700s Robertson family.
I know this is a long shot but any clues would be welcomed.I'm trying to connect the above Christians and Washingtons.
Thank you
Terrie
