Mary Dorothy Christian lived long enough to see the turn of two centuries. Born in Massachusetts in 1889, she arrived in San Pablo, Calif., with her family in 1900 when the city was just a settlement with nameless streets, a place she once called " a little town with a lot of work. "
Mrs. Christian, who was certified as the longest-living American last November, died April 20 at the Creekside Healthcare Center in San Pablo after a bout with pneumonia. She was 113.
Described by those who knew her as a woman far ahead of her time, she was independent and strong-willed almost to the end, said her niece, Marge Parks, noting that Mrs. Christian chose to live alone until 1992 and then refused to live with family members to avoid imposing on them.
Parks recalled trimming and polishing Mrs. Christian ' s fingernails and cutting her hair during her visits to the center. Up to a month ago, Mrs. Christian was still alert, though she would have occasional hallucinations. In her lucid moments, she could remember relatives ' birthdays and anniversaries.
" She ' d say, ' I don ' t have anything else to do while I ' m here, so I just keep thinking about dates, ' " Parks said. " She made up her mind that she was going to be 114, but I guess she didn ' t quite make it. "
Mrs. Christian was born June 12, 1889, in Taunton, Mass.
By the time she was officially recognized as the oldest American, she was constantly bed-ridden, nearly blind and had trouble hearing. She seemed to relish the spotlight and recounted early childhood memories to reporters and said it felt great to be recognized as the nation ' s oldest.
After hearing news reports naming someone younger than Mrs. Christian as the oldest American, two of her relatives independently started to search for documents establishing her birth date.
Their work was validated last fall, and Mrs. Christian also made it onto the Web site of the Guinness Book of Records.
" It felt real good for her to have her acknowledged and recognized (for living so long), " said her great-granddaughter Sharon Hanney of Martinez. " That was a very important thing. To be recognized as the oldest living American meant something for her. "
Mrs. Christian held a number of jobs during her working years. She worked at the Van Amden Chocolate Co. labeling cocoa cans and making candy until the 1906 earthquake leveled the company.
She was the third telephone operator for the Pacific Telephone Co. in Point Richmond and went on to work at the Standard Oil cafeteria and for Harry Alberts at the Annex, a dry-goods store that eventually became Macy ' s. She worked as an elevator operator at the department store until her retirement. She worked as a nanny until 1971.
She married O.R. Christian in 1907. They had two sons before they divorced in 1922.

Trying to connect Elijah L. Christian (b. 1794 in VA, d. abt. 1844 in GA) to
the VA Christians, probably through Charles Sr. & Charles Jr. He married
Rebecca Coleman in 1820, Elizabeth Edwards in 1828, and Mary Jane Fitts in
1832 - all in Elbert Co. Need to know who his parents were and where he
died.

Paul,
This is Nan's hubby replying... Mr. Haley of Utica Public Library (genealogy section), Don Wisnowski of the Oneida Historical Society and Bob Tagger of the Clinton Historical Society are of the opinion William's branch died out. Don has some information on Wm. Christian. Bob is writing a history of the 26th NYV and has some Christian info too. I have issued muliple inquiries on William... from the staff historians at NB Antietam to Dartmouth Special Collections... so I should be getting more info soon (recently found two diaries from 26th NY vols). Sue Greenhagen of SUNY Morrisville Library is also an excellent source of information on local civil war matters (has a super civil war website too), although she probably doesn't have much more info on Col. Christian. I probably have more "stuff" than either Don, Sue or Bob at this point. The good news is that I am rapidly finding enough material (and some photos) to complete a decent serialed installment article on him !
(for my MA in Ed).
Yes, I have read Finnell's article on Christian. NARA (Wash DC) has a large folder on William which I copied-it took me all day. His folder is accessible to the public (albeit a trip to DC is best to ensure completeness). Additionally, Mr. Musick (NARA) thinks that some of his missing ORs are in the McClellan collection-I'm still working on that.
Regarding the Mexican war entries, I found reference to him/some interesting info in a couple of books on Stevenson's Regiment (7th NY Vols). I am on a timetable to finish the article series...first installment due tomorrow... I'll share more when I can. R/S Mark
Looking for information on Valentine Christian, born in 1756 in Hunterdon County, NJ, who is probably my g-g-g-granduncle. Valentine served in the Revolutionary War, and later moved to Columbia County, PA, where he died in 1869. He married a Robbins. Some of the family may have moved to Saint Joseph County, IN, where a Valentine Christian was living in Harris township in 1870. Would be happy to exchange data.
