I am a new subscriber to the List. I have started to research the ancestry
of my son-in-law, Alec Christian.
>From c. 1840 to the early 1900's this Christian family lived at Toxteth
Park, Liverpool. Frank Christian (born 1876) was a Shipwright. His father,
also named Frank (born 1850), was a Baker and Grocer.
Henry Christian, who moved to Liverpool in the late 1830's, was born in 1810
at Alverstoke, Hampshire.
I would like to contact any other List members who are researching Christian
families in Liverpool or in Hampshire.

Kathy: Anytime I try to rely on memory I make a fool of myself. Much of what I had in my E-mail on 14 Oct was wrong. I have prepared biographical sketches of each member of the Legion Infantry. The primary source is Compiled Services Records from National Archives, but i have also consulted the South Carolina Memory Rolls (at the State Archives, prepared ca 1890 to assist with the administration of the Confederate pension law--but pretty much of little help for The Davis Guards), newspaper casualty lists where available, letters, dairies, and anything else I could put my hands on. I also picked up something on hium from the Virginia State Archives and the 1870 Census, all of which I am sure that you have.
My sketch for RWC reads as follows:
CHRISTIAN, ROBERT WALKS. Enl Richmond 6 Jul 61, age 21. Present Jul 61-Oct 62; WIA Gaines Mill 27 Jun 62; admitted S.C. Hosp [no location] 22 Nov 62; discharged on surgeon's certificate for ascitis 28 Nov 62; later in Mounted Guard Militia, 3rd VA Congressional Dist; age 22 at discharge; 5'5"; newspaper editor; born New Kent County, Va; resident Chesterfield, Va. at enlistment; living in Jefferson Ward, City of Richmond in 1870.
I am sure that you have all of this, with the possible exception of his wound at Gaines Mill, which comes from the newspapter casualty list in the Charleston Daily Courier. The Legion was then a part of Hood's Texas Brigade, and was on the extreme left of Hood's line, in the trees, and fortunately suffered only about 20 casualties, when McClellan's line was broken. Because of the fluidity of the military situation, the muster rolls for that period for the Legion are lost.
I have his name as Robert "Walks" Christian. That comes, if I recall correctly, from the "Memory Rolls"--actually entitled "South Carolina Volunteers in Confederate Service, Infantry", one of three massive manuscript volumns. I am sure that as his great-great granddaughter you know his middle name. Have you ever heard that he went by the nickname "Walks?" I m going to change my data base to correct his name.
I don't know when Rock Hill became anything more than a dot on the map. In 1860 the political and economic center of the District (now County) was located in the village of Yorkville (now York), about 12-15 miles northwest of Rock Hill. There was a very good local weekly--still published--called the Yorkville Inquirer which was pulbished in Yorkville. I stronly suspect that he worked there. I don't believe that a newspaper was started in Rock Hill until several years postwar; it was the Rock Hill Lantern, and it in turn was purchased by J. M. Ivey, a Rock Hill merchant (and membver of Company A of the Legion), in 1874, and he renamed it the Rock Hill Herald that year. The back issues of the Yorkville Inquirer are on microfilm at South Caroliniana Library, at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, and I believe also at the Southern Historical Center at the University of North Carolina. If, as I believe to be the case, the paper is still published, at the York Inq!
uirer, you may be able to call them, in York, to verify if Christian worked there. I am not familiar wioth the name Rock Hill Chronicle, but the people at the desk of South Caroliniana Library will be verify in momemnts if there ever was a newspaper by that name, and when it was published.
I have not figured out his decision to enlist in the Legion. <I had assumed before you advised me that he had a South Carolina connecxtion that he was in Richmond when the Legion arrived from South Carolina in early July, 1861, and swept up by the excitement, he enlisted in a South Carolina unit. That obviously is not the case. The six infantry of companies of the original Legion (augmented to 7, then 8, and finally to a regiment of ten) began mustering in Columbia in mid-June, 1861. The Davis Guards were enlisted from a tightly confined geographic area around Mauldin, just south of Greenville, and mustered originally on the grounds of Bethel Methodist Church. They ten entrained for Columbia. The Legion began moving to Virginia starting about June 28, with the movement continuing until July 3. One of the cavalry companies did not arrive until mid July, and the artillery battery did not arrive until August. A number of men who had not arrived at the Coilumbia muster g!
rounds before the departure of the Legion were sent onward by train, and they enlisted in Riochmond. Obviously R.W. Christian is one of those. The only question I have is why he enlisted in this unit which except for a very few exceptions was composed on men from Greenville District, and then from a small section of the District. J. M. Ivey (mentioned above), at the time a resident of neighboring Lancaster District, and Iredell Jones and his brother Cadwallader Jones, Jr., from Rock Hill did enlist in Company A, which was primarily composed of young dandies from Charleston and the Coast, but they were all college classmates from South Carolina College. Do you know if his wife Eliza (Wilson) had any connection to Greenville. For the most part, men tended to voluntarily enlist
in units which had a strong geographic cohesion. It is a puzzlement. I can't E-mial from my disks since the word processioning system of this system is not compatible with the system I use for my Confederate "stuff." However, I will send you my printed sheets, the footnote page, and a brief syopsis of the Legion, by regular mail if you send me you mail address.
The information you sent was most helpful. I will fold it into my sketch, and footnote it appropriately. Did you know of his wound at Gaines Mill?
If you want to read a a collection of letters written by a senior officer of the Legion, with commentary on what was going on, in the period from Jun 61-Jun 62, try Orville Burton and Judith MacArthur, A Gentleman and an Officer, published about 1998 by Oxford University Press. It is available in most larger libraries, and can be pruchased at Barnes and Noble and probably elsewhere. From a common soldier's prespective, there was a series of articles in the Confederate Veteran Magazine by John T. Coxe. They ran from about 1910 until into the 1920's, and are highly accuarate, which is rare for memoirs of veterans written that long after the war. Coxe was actually a member of the Davis Guards (Company F), until he transferred out to another unit some time during the summer of 1862. Each of the articles are short, but are well written, and describe some aspect of what the Hampton Legion (and particularly Company F) was doing at the time. Go to any decent sized library, get!
the index for Confederate Veteran, and look up John T. Coxe as the author.
Any other personal information you might have on your gg grandfather would be appreciated. I apologize for the rambling message, but hope that it helps.
Warm regards, Lee

Kathy: Saw your cryptic note on RWC while browsing . I have been researching the Hampton Legion Infantryt for a number of years, and Christrian has intrigued me, since he enlisted in the Legion while it was in Virginia, in the nbieghborhood of Riuchmond and Petersburg in the spring and summer of 1863. Only a handful of Virginians joined the Legion, but he was one, ands was one of only one or two who stayedxc with the colors. I have a biographical sketch of him, but the entires are almost entirely from Compiled Service Records. I do not have the roster fbefore me, so do not pin me down on details. I will send you a copy of the roster, adn also a thumnnail sketch of the Legion. Could you provide me info on Christian?
