In the 1850 census of New Kent, Virginia I've located the following family in Dwelling #498
Caroline M. Christian 56 F b. VA
Sarah A. 33 F b. VA, Edm. F. 25 M b. VA, Henry B. 19 M b. VA, Jones R. 16 M b. VA, Betty I 10 F b. VA, Eugenia 7 F b VA William C. 5 M, b. VA
A deposition given in Hanover County Chancery Court lists Caroline as a sister to William K. Barlow and Widow of Charles Christian.
The deposition also lists another child Martha as the wife of Philip Vermilra of Henrico Co, VA (spelled Vermelera in census)
Living next door to this family at #497 William E. Christian 30, b. VA and Ann E. 20, b. VA. and at #499 Chris. S Christian 45 F, Edm. Christian 24 M (physician) VA, Mary M. 22 F, Elizabeth 21 F VA, Robert 14 M, VA and Christiana 7 F, VA
I'm attempting to find a link between two Barlow families in Caroline and Hanover counties. Any information about this particular Christian family, place of birth and parents for Charles - a marriage record - a will - any reference in public records would be most welcome and might help me solve a long standing genealogical puzzle.
thank you

George Christian
George Christian, son of James and Susanna Christian Sr. of Albemarle
County, was born circa 1748 in Albemarle County, VA, and died on Aug. 19,
1784 in Amherst County. Based on a will and a supreme court case, it appears
that George Christian had brothers named Charles, James Jr. and John
Christian.
George married Martha Bell, daughter of Henry Bell, on Jan. 16, 1775 in
Amherst County. Martha was born Aug. 8, 1755, and died in Nelson County,
April 19, 1833. They had only four children as proven in a court of appeals
case. After George died, Martha married Capt. Stephen Watts, widower, Jan.
24, 1790. Capt. Watts, who served in the Revolutionary War, first married
Elizabeth Farrar.
Children of George and Martha (Bell) Christian were:
1. James Christian was born in 1776 in Amherst County, and died in July 1854
in Appomattox County at the home of a daughter, Elizabeth (Christian)
Vawter. James married Cordelia Watts, daughter of Capt. Stephen and
Elizabeth (Farrar) Watts, Feb. 28, 1795, in Amherst County.
2. Elizabeth Christian was born in 1778, and died June 26, 1854, in
Buckingham County. She married James Murphy, Sept. 27, 1804, in Amherst
County.
3. Charles H. Christian was born circa 1783 in Amherst County and died
unmarried on July 4, 1856 in Buckingham County.
4. Sarah "Sally" Christian was born in Amherst County in 1784, and died in
Nelson County on March 26, 1865. Sarah married William Horsely III, son of
William and Martha (Megginson) Horsley II, in 1808. William III was born in
1772 and died on April 21 1865. His occupation was farming, and he served as
one of the first magistrates of Nelson County.
Children of William and Sarah (Christian) Horsely II were:
a. Paul Murphy Horsley was born circa 1818 and died in 1880. He married
Elizabeth Abbitt of Buckingham County. Their children were: (1) Lelia
Horsely, (2) Benjamin Abbitt Horsley married Berta Thomas (3) William
Horsley IV married a Miss Cheatham, (4) Paul Murphy Horsley Jr. married
Willie Johnson, (5) James Abbitt Horsley, and (6) Mary Horsley.
b. Martha Elizabeth Horsley was born on Feb. 21, 1821, and died Nov. 29,
1904. She married Willis E. Harris, Aug. 31, 1842. Willis was born on Feb.
1, 1811 and died Feb. 27, 1879. See the section on the Harris family for
more information on their descendants.
c. Mary Cabell Horsely married Eldridge Gary Jefferson. Their children were:
(1) Eldridge Gary Jefferson Jr., (2) Bolling Jefferson, (3) Sallie Christian
Jefferson.

Jim,
You are not the only one who doesn't know about this James Christian who was
born in Amherst County, VA in 1776 and died in July 1854 in Appomattox
County, VA, but lived most of his life in Nelson County, which was separated
from Amherst County in 1808. James married Cordelia Watts, daughter of
Stephen and Elizabeth (Farrar) Watts, on Feb. 28, 1795 in Amherst County.
James Christian was a son of George and Martha (Bell) Christian of Amherst
County. George Christian was born circa 1748 and died in Amherst County on
Aug. 19, 1784. Martha (Bell) Christian was born on Aug. 8, 1755, and died in
Nelson County, April 19, 1833. George and Martha were married on Jan. 16,
1775 in Amherst County. They had four and only four children. To complicate
matters, the widow Martha (Bell) Christian married widower Stephen Watts
listed above and they had a child Henry H. Watts. The Watts estate was tied
up in court for decades.
Speaking of court cases, the Christian estate was in litigation for decades
too, which is where I found some of the genealogical answers. It went to the
Virginia Supreme Court, see William Mumford, Reports of Cases Argued and
Determined In the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia, (The Franklin
Office: Richmond, Virginia), 1821, Vol. VI, p. 520. Also, Reports of Cases
Argued and Determined in the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia, (Franklin
Office: Richmond, Virginia), Vol. VI, pp. 534-554. From this we learn the
father of George Christian (1748-1784) was James Christian who married
Susannah. And that George Christian had brothers Charles who died unmarried
in 1761, John (died in 1823) who married Judith Duiguid, and James Christian
Jr. At this point in time we are in Albemarle County, VA in the 1750s
(Amherst was not formed until 1761).
I spent part of last week in the Amherst and Nelson County courthouses, but
that was not my first visit. There are so many James and John Christians,
that a casual researcher would be totally confused. I've been studying the
lineage of James Christian who married Cordelia Watts for decades and have
just started to surface with finality and documentation. I don't want to
overwhelm anyone with information, so will create another post to transmit
information on the family units of George and Martha (Bell) Christian and of
James and Cordelia (Watts) Christian. Anyone not interested in the subject
may delete without reading.

I found the booklet, History of the Glover Family With Christian
Connections," written by Charles Lindorf Glover (1841-1922). I had searched
the major libraries DAR, LoC, etc., to no avail, but found it in the Jones
Memorial Library in Lynchburg, VA, F(amily)F(ile)2203. It isn't a book, but
just a typewritten, yellowish, paper.
His story of the Glover family is a homespun account of an aged man who
wanted to leave behind some of his knowledge about the family. The valuable
part for me was his wife's verbal account of the family of James
(1776-1854) and Cordelia (Watts) Christian and their children, about 2 pages
long. His wife was a daughter of Charles Lawson Christian, born in 1803 in
Amherst County and died March 27, 1862 in Buckingham County, VA. Charles L.
was in public life, including a term as sheriff for Buckingham County. He
was also a farmer and slave trader in Buckingham County.
I was a skeptic about this Charles Lawson Christian being a son of James and
Cordelia (Watts) Christian until reading Glover's manuscript. His wife
should certainly have known the names of her parents and grandparents. So
folks, I have changed my records to show that Charles Lawson Christian
married Cary Ann Lewis, daughter of William and Anna (Glover) Lewis on Sept.
9, 1847 in Buckingham County. Cary Ann died on April 26, 1890 in Buckingham
County. Information on the siblings of Charles L. Christian is less reliable
(especially ages), because they lived in different counties. She said that
Harrod Scott (1800-1848) who married Charles L.'s sibling, Sarah Jordon
Christian, was a physician who died in St. Louis. Who would have known that?
I now have a more accurate account of the family unit of James and Cordelia
(Watts) Christian. James was a son of George and Martha (Bell) Christian of
Amherst County, and George was a son of James and Susannah Christian of
Albemarle County. The obituary of Cordelia (Watts) Christian, published in a
Richmond paper in 1848, states that she had eleven surviving children, now
all accounted for. The Glover account lists 10, with John being erroneously

Orders 1851-1860, pp. 45-47, when Silas P. Vawter, son-in-law of James and
Cordelia Christian, was appointed Trustee for the estate. Decades of
