I'm new to this list, so here goes: my great-grandfather was George Riley
Christian who married Corinthia S. Davis. He was born 1862 in Tazewell Co.,
VA, died 1946 in McDowell Co., WV. Also married Sarah Anglin, after
Corinthia died. His parents were Mathias Christian and Eleanor Beavers. I
have quite a bit on the Christians but am open to more info and will help as
much as I can. What I need most is info on his wife Corinthia if anyone
knows anything about her. I found out recently that she was born in Grayson
Co., VA and that her parents were Thomas and Angeline Davis. That's all I
know, except that her mom may have been a McGrady... Any help appreciated.

Thanks to all of you who responded to my query regarding
Lemuel L Christian.
To Kim Christian, thanks for the address: I wrote yesterday
to purchase a copy of Mrs. Stacy's book. Hope they have a
few copies left.
I do not have a copy of the marriage license for William
Calvin Knapp to Alice E Christian but do plan to write for
it ... I subscribe to the Franklin Cty IL and Perry County
IL
BBs and thanks to the information on those web sites, I
found
the information on parents for Alice. Some wonderful person
has taken the time to place the parents information
on the FCI web site
Our family information on Alice Christian is scant. The
information I have that was compiled by an Aunt (my Mother's
Sister) from their mother (my grandmother) spelled the name
'Christine'. I also have not been able to find Alice E
Christian in the Franklin Cty Illinois census in ANY
household. Nor have I located Wm Calvin and Alice E KNAPP
(married in 1878) on either the Franklin or Perry Cty 1880
Census. The last few pages of Perry Cty 1880 are not very
legible and they don't seem to be on the Franklin Cty 1880
census as well. As I seem to be "stuck" in Arkansas for
awhile longer and our State Archives here does not have the
Illinois Census, I have to order these in thru the FHCenter
here. Their hours and mine don't jive and the one census
I've perused over and over is so bad you cannot read the
names.
I do have the fortune to have visited Mulkey Grove cemetery
where Alice Christian Knapp and family are buried; in fact
an uncle still lives a mile or so from there. I also have a
picture of Alice and husband William Calvin Knapp taken at
the time of their marriage.
A William Christian owned the farm next to parents of
William Calvin (Jerome Knapp and Mary Johnson), and I
surmised that Alice may have been a niece who visited
there. Another Knapp cousin researcher told me Alice lived
in the Christopher community, which bears out the marriage
in Govelle Twp (Christopher is in Govelle Twp). I shall now
look in Greenberry Hill's household in Browning Twp of
Franklin Cty and also check out the neighbors.
For any of you interested in this line - Lucy Christian and
Greenberry Hill, there are postings on the Franklin County
BB regrading the family, children, and other information of
Greenberry Hill and Lucy Christian. I believe Kim Christian
is active on that bb as well.
After someone on the FCI told me about Lemuel Christian and
family being on the 1860 Tishomingo Cty MS census, I did a
search on the BLM site, and found a Lemuel Christian of
Marion Cty Tennessee who purchased land in Itawamba Cty
Mississipi on Nov 28, 1943; then on 9 Oct 1845 Lemuel Leek
Christian purchased land in Tishimingo Cty, MS. I rather
think this is the Lemuel L. Christian, son of Charles.
Again, thank you to all who responded to my query and all
the information you have sent. I do have the printed
marriage records and printed 1850 Census for Perry County
which contains several Christians and will gladly post these
to the list if anyone is interested.

I am interested in Lemuel Christian and Kim's posting of Fri
Sept 15, 2000. This stated that Lemuel Christian lived in
Mississippi for a few years then moved to Perry County,
Illinois. My great-grandmother was Alice E. Christian who
married William Calvin Knapp 18 April 1878 in Franklin
County, Illinois. I am told the Franklin County marriage
records (don't yet have a copy of the marriage application)
show her father to be Lemuel Christian, her mother Charlotte
Mitchell. Alice Christian Knapp was born 1860/1861, married
1878, died March 14, 1890 shortly after birth of a daughter.
My grandmother was Charlotte Mary Knapp (named for both
grandmothers - Charlotte Mitchell Christian and Mary Johnson
Knapp). I am indebted to the Christian bulletin board for
enlightening me as to Lemuel Christian in the above and a
couple of other posts and wish to say thank you to all. I
also want to ask if anybody has word as to whether Eunie
Stacy's book is still available since her death last
spring? I am told it is the "Bible" as far as Christian
information is concerned.
Again, Thanks to you all.

Art,
it would help to have geographic locations in Switzerland.
Swiss archive are quite good and go back far enough.
The surname Christian (Christen, etc) there comes most
likely from the Roman name for Kelts there, cresti.

Does anyone have a transcription of the 1850 Census for Appomatox Co.,

The on-line index lists GLOVER 180A-182A-190B-199A-200A.
Am looking for the entry and details for the family of Samuel Glover and his
wife Eliz. CHRISTIAN GLOVER
especially ages and places of birth.
Thanks.

Nona,
We have family information dating back to the children and grandchildren of
Lucy Ann, that Lucy Ann CHRISTIAN was the daughter of Charles Lawson
CHRISTIAN.
We also have the following trail of evidence though records:
1. Charles Lawson Christian, for a few years, was a neighbor of Green Berry
Hill in Sullivan County, Tennessee. This can be seen by consulting the 1830
Sullivan County, Tennessee Census. They lived very, very close to one
another with only few households separating them. (One of which was Green
Berry's father William HILL, only 2 house away from C L CHRISTIAN.) Charles
Lawson's younger children are documented to have been born in Sullivan Co.,
Tennessee in 1822 and 1824. Green Berry and Lucy Ann were married either in
late 1829, or early 1830 - before the Census, as their oldest child, William
Henry HILL, was born 11 Oct 1830 , and he is not present in their household
in the 1830 Census.
2. Lemuel Christian is a documented son of Charles Lawson Christian.
Lemuel moved to Mississippi for a few years and then came to Perry County,
Illinois which is next to Franklin County, Illinois. Franklin county
Illinois is where Lucy Christian Hill and her husband Green Berry Hill moved
and lived out their lives.
3. Daniel Christian is a documented son of Lemuel Christian. When Lemuel
Christian died, Daniel Christian, still a minor, was sent to live in the
household of his aunt Lucy Ann Christian Hill and her husband Green B. Hill.
It is unlikely this would have happened if there was no relationship between
Lucy Ann Christian and Lemuel Christian. This can be proven by consulting
the 1870 Franklin County, Illinois Census. Daniel is listed as a 14 year
old male who was born in Mississippi. Mississippi is
the state to which Lemuel Christian immigrated.
4. Raphael Gaston Christian is another documented son of Lemuel Christian.
Raphael married a daughter of Lucy Ann Christian Hill on 23 Feb 1865 in
Franklin Co., Illinois. Her name was Judith / Judia L. When Raphael and
his wife died in Missouri, several of his young children were sent to
Franklin County, Illinois to live with Hester Hill. who was another daughter
of Lucy Christian Hill. This again shows a strong family connection.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------
Now, according to the data we have found on the Lemuel CHRISTIAN family:
Lemuel L CHRISTIAN born 1819 Amherst Co., Virginia
married by 1836
Charlotte MITCHELL
The Children of Lemuel and Charlotte:
Hester CHRISTIAN, born 1836 Sullivan, Tennessee
Samantha P CHRISTIAN, born 1839 Sullivan, Tennessee
Raphael Gaston CHRISTIAN, born 1842 Itawamba, Mississippi
( Raphael Gaston married Judy HILL, daughter of Green Berry HILL
and Lucy Ann CHRISTIAN, in Franklin Co., Illinois)
Judy CHRISTIAN, born 1844 Itawamba, Mississippi
Charles Ransford Sr. CHRISTIAN, born 19 Apr 1848 Itawamba Co., Mississippi
Daniel Z CHRISTIAN, born Feb 1858 Itawamba, Mississippi
(He lived with Green Berry and Lucy Ann after his parents died, believe I
have a photocopy of the 1870 Census of Franklin Co., Illinois which shows
Daniel CHRISTIAN in their household at age 12, and identifies him as a
nephew.)
THUS,
Daniel was Lucy Ann's nephew, making Lemuel her brother, and Charles Lawson
her father!
Nona, What we are looking for now is the "smoking gun" to confirm this trail
of reasoning, and documents.
We are looking for a copy of the Will of Charles Lawson CHRISTIAN, which was
Probated in Amherst, Virginia!

Notes for LEMUEL L. CHRISTIAN:
In 1819 the United States "purchased" Florida from Spain; no money was paid
to Spain, but the United
States agreed to pay American settlers for damages to their property
suffered during battles over Florida.
The territory of Florida was organized in 1822. As thousands of settlers
poured into Florida the Indians
continued to cause trouble. The Seminole had settled on the good farm land
in central Florida.
When the United States urged Indian tribes to move west, the Seminole
massacred Major Francis L. Dade
and his troops. This incident in 1835 started the second Seminole War. A
call went out for volunteer
militia and many from Northeast Alabama responded. Seventeen companies with
60 to 84 men in each
formed the North Alabama Mounted Volunteers commanded by Col. Benjamin
Snodgrass. The men were
mustered in 26 October 1837 and discharged 12 April 1838 at Turkeytown.
Three companies were
formed almost entirely from the Bolivar-Pleasant Grove area. Lemuel L.
Christian was a private in
Company K from Bolivar under Capt. Samuel M. Cowan, and William Christian
was listed as a corporal.

I do not believe the marriage was consummated. It has been a family story
that Fountain killed a man in
Al. and fled to La. I know I have found him in La. in the latter part of
1852, and have began to wonder if
the story could be correct.
I find a starting place here with the Christian family and wonder if
Judith's father or brother did not
approve of Fountain and a fight ensued. If any of you are decended from this

would be most interested. Thanks Richard Sharp - rsharp(a)cp-tel.net.

Notes for GEORGE SANDERS CHRISTIAN:
My GF, George Sanders CHRISTIAN, was the son of John Lemuel and Lucinda
CARGILE
CHRISTIAN. He was born in Stevenson, AL in 1881. He never appeared on a
census with the family,
though. He would have been on the 1890 census, but it was destroyed. By
the 1900 census, he was
living away from the family (I think for the railroad).
I have my GF's death certificate with his parents listed and I also have his
sister, Flora Lee CHRISTIAN
MOORE's, death certificate with the same parents. I felt I had to have
proof, other than what the family
always told me.
My GF married my GM, Dora Rankin FARROW, in Stevenson in 1905 and they moved
to Memphis.
John Lemuel lived with them in Memphis on the census for
1910.

5. NANCY SUSAN3 CHRISTIAN was born Abt. 1846. She married ELDER JOHN A.
CARGILE, son of JAMES
CARGILE and ELIZABETH HUDDLESTON. He was born 1843 in Jackson County,
Alabama, and died 1920.
Notes for ELDER JOHN A. CARGILE:
In 1872 Elder John A. Cargile wrote a book in which he stated that his
father, James C. Cargile, and family
emigrated to Missouri in 1838 ''in search of a better country,'' making the
journey with an ox team in about
three months. In 1845 they returned to Alabama and in 1849 they moved to
Crow Creek, on account of the
drouth, to Longacre'.s Mill. He also wrote, "James Cargile was of the third
generation from three Scotch-lrish
brothers of our name who came from the north of Ireland.'' Lewis Cargile,
the father of James, was a son of
William Cargile, who died in 1844-45 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, and
left a will naming six of his
children:
Lewis; Jason (also came to this area, but left before 1840); Rebecca;
Elizabeth Wrifiyht; Polly Wood; Peggy Stailey.
There were likely two more named Pleasant and Joel, who were given
inheritance before their father died.
Elder John A. Cargile (1843-1920) was an Adventist preacher. He travelled
widely over middle and eastern
United States both to conduct revival meetings and to debate religious
issues. It was said that he could
quote from memory chapter after chapter of the Bible. Certain of his
sermons were so profound and inspiring
that he often received request to repeat the sermons in churches from Kansas
to Maine. It was not unusual
for him to go on preaching tours lasting three to six months, sometimes
taking his family and sometimes alone.

END REPORT____________________
The "known" children of Charles Lawson CHRISTIAN and Susannah WILLIAMSON
are:
Ann Elizabeth CHRISTIAN, born. 1813 (?) Amherst Co., Virginia (we are trying
to determine the source if information for this individual)
Asa W CHRISTIAN, born 1814 Amherst Co., Virginia died 1870-1880 Jackson Co.,
Alabama
Unknown Daughter CHRISTIAN, born between 1815 and 1820 (According to the
1830 Sullivan Co., Tennessee Census this daughter was still in the household
of C L CHRISTIAN. There is no mention of what became of this daughter by
any sources I have found to date. Note that this daughter cannot be Lucy Ann
as she is living with Green Berry just a few houses away in the 1830
Census.)
William H CHRISTIAN born 23 Feb 1817 Amherst Co., Virginia died 30 June 1898
Long Island, Jackson Co., Alabama
Lemuel L CHRISTIAN born 1819 Amherst Co., Virginia
Peter F. CHRISTIAN born 1822 Sullivan Co., Tennessee (Peter F and Asa W were
named guardians of their younger sister, Judith L on 19 Oct 1840; bond was
posted in Amherst Co. Virginia)
Judith L CHRISTIAN born 1824 Sullivan Co., Tennessee probably the one who
married (?) 16 March 1852 Jefferson Co., Alabama
Our proposed child: Lucy Ann CHRISTIAN, born 20 Nov 1813 (or 1815,
depending on which record we believe), was married to and living with Green
Berry HILL in Sullivan Co., Tennessee in 1830 - only a few houses away from
C L CHRISTIAN and his family.

Did your Charles Lawson Christian have a son named Elisha?

Jim,
Do you have a copy of the Will for Charles Lawson CHRISTIAN who died 1840?
I have been looking, and have thus far only found extracts from the Probate
of this Estate.
If you have a copy could you send me a scan?
If not can you tell me where it is available?
Kim
Y'All -
I have been bothered by name 'Lawson' in the name of my 3GGF, Charles Lawson
CHRISTIAN of Amherst Co., VA and Jackson Co., AL. POOF - there pops up the
middle name of Lawson in a batch of Leakes and Fords. It just seemed to be
so out of place
I happened upon a couple of mentions of a General LAWSON of Amherst Co., VA
in records of the Revolutionary War. I have not researched to see if he was
a Charles.
I have in my notes on C. L.'s father, John B. CHARISTIAN, that he may or may
not be the John Christian who served in the Revolution from Washington Co.,
VA. in the First Rifle Regiment.
I SPECULATE that John B. CHRISTIAN served under General LAWSON of Amherst
Co., and not in a unit from Washington Co.
I shall seek on and
