I am looking for the ancestors of Andrew Jackson Christian who was born
in 1837 in Farsund, Norway. He was brought to America by an older
brother who was a sea captain in the early 1850s. We know that Andrew's
brothers lived in Brooklyn NY and one of them owned a brick and lumber
yard there. In Norway, the family may have used the name Sorensen
rather than Christian. They took the name Christian on arrival in
America. Does anyone out there connect with this family? Thanks for
help
Perry Adams
Though you all might like some humor. My favorite Aunt sent this
to me. Enjoy. Rhonda

Hi Linda- We may be distant cousins as I descend from Thomas Ewing Christian and
Mary Ann Doughty Christian of Cocke Co Tenn, and their son Lewis Calvin Christian
who removed to Atchison Co Missouri. But the reason I respond is because this
summer while I was doing research in the Atchison Co MO library (on a different
surname) an older woman and her parents who came from another more southern county
of MO were there searching for Christian information and your line sounds like
what they were looking for... I do not have this lady's name right now- it may be
buried in some of my papers, but I do believe she was looking for Thomas N.... I
will see if I can put you in touch with her in some way.
In checking my records, it seems that your Lewis could be a brother of my Thomas
Ewing, although I do not show him in the family- I only have 4 children of Anthony
Christian and Sallie Ewing, and only data on my Thomas - there could very well be
more children as many of the Christian families in VA and TN had 10+ kids. If not
a brother they are likely cousins as many of your given names are the same or
quite similar to mine.

I've been on the Christian list so long you all seem like family.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find the one Christian I have been
looking for. I'm going to post this message one more time, then bid a fond
farewell.
Probably around 1917 - 1920 in Weakley County, Tenn (or so I'm told), my
ggrandmother, Cora Marina Barger Warren (widow of Joe Warren who died in
Gibson Co, TN in 1907) married a MR. CHRISTIAN. I know that Mr. Christian was
well thought of by Cora's family because her children all referred to him as
"Mr. Christian" (rather than Old Man Christian). My father's cousin remembers
him as a fun-loving man who was always kind and playful to his step-
grandchildren.
No one knows Mr. Christian's first name or anything else about him or his
family. Cora died in 1958 and was a widow by that time. Cora is buried next
to her first husband, Joe Warren, in Poplar Springs Cemetery, Gibson County,
TN. My dad's cousin says it was simply because Cora had bought the plot
before she married Mr. Christian and not a statement about Mr. Christian or
their marriage.
Mr. Christian belongs in our family history, but I need some help finding him.
Thank you,
Karla Butler Everett

I am trying to find the parents and family of the William P. Christian
who served in the Civil War. He was in Company L, also known as
"Blackwell Volunteers", a rifle battalion. He served part of his term
in Hardesville, South Carolina.
Hi, I have been looking for this connection to my family tree--CHRISTIAN &
MEAD. My great-grandfather and great-grandmother, David Andrew MEAD, born
1859 and Della Ann CHRISTIAN, born 1870. Della's parents were Charles
Ransford CHRISTIAN and Melissa GREENWOOD. This seem familiar to anyone? I
don't have any further info on David. Thanks for any help. dceokc(a)aol.com
According to the 1820 Elbert Co. GA census, a man named
William B. CHRISTIAN was living there, on the list of a Rufus
Christian (does anyone know what towns that encompassed?)
What was the name of this William's wife? And did they
have twin daughters named Lucy Jane and Eliza Frances,
born 2 Nov 1819 in Elbert Co. GA? These girls married
in Fayette Co. GA -- Eliza to Barney WESTBROOK in 1837
and Lucy to Nathaniel SHELLNUT in 1839. Lucy ended up
in Carroll Co. GA and Eliza in Hunt Co. TX.
William B. appears on the 1830 Elbert Co. GA census and,
according to that was born 1780-1790. And supposedly
he had 2 draws in the 1805 GA land lottery. What does
that show about him as far as his age and his background?
I am not too familiar with the land lotteries.
Did this William B. move to Fayette Co. GA by 1837?
I appreciate any help you can give.

Hello fellow Christian researchers.
I have three missing men in my family tree and hope someone out there can
help.
1) John Christian who married Elizabeth Stogland (sometimes written Stockton)
was the son of Gilbert Christian and Margaret Anderson. After Gilbert died,
the three sons went to Overton County, TN. Son, George settled on Gilbert's
land grant and lived there until he was, reportedly 103 years of age. The
other sons sold off their land in Overton County and moved on. My information
says that son John married Elizabeth Stogland. They had a son John, Jr. born
in Kentucky in 1804 who married Rebecca Maddox and later Charity Vickmore.
While John, Jr. was born in Kentucky, he was married in Overton County, TN to
Rebecca. John, Jr. migrated to Jefferson County, Illinois before the Civil
War. It remains a mystery to me what happened to John, son of Gilbert, and
wife Elizabeth Stogland. Did they remain in Tennessee? I haven't been able
to locate them on a census after 1850. Did they go to Illinois also? Were
there other children of this marriage? If anyone has further information, I
would surely like to know it.
2) Further down this same line, John, Jr. and Rebecca Maddox had a son named
John VanBuren Christian, married to Amanda Skillern. All but the last of
their children were born in Illinois. They then returned to Tennessee. When
their son, Anderson Forest Christian died in 1913, the obituary listed two
brothers as survivors. They were Maynard W. Christian, born June 1882 and
John J. or S. or W. (the census is difficult to read) born in Lawrence
County, TN. Maynard and John were in the home of their mother, Amanda
Skillern Christian in 1900 when she was listed as a widow. I've been unable
to locate Maynard or John since then. The obit did not mention where these
two brothers lived in 1913. Anderson Forest was my husband's great
grandfather. If we can locate Maynard or John, there may be living
descendants in the immediate family. Otherwise, as the only son of an only
son, there are no more Christians in this line.
Would welcome any help from anyone out there who might have a line on any of
these three men.

According to the 1820 Elbert Co. GA census, there were two
men named William CHRISTIAN living there. One of them
was William Payne CHRISTIAN, whose wife was Sarah
MAXWELL. Does anyone know the name of the other
William's wife?
The reason I need to know is that I descend from a Lucy
Jane CHRISTIAN who, according to her obituary, was
born in Elbert Co. GA in 1819 to a William and Sarah
CHRISTIAN. Lucy married Nathaniel SHELLNUT and
settled in Carroll Co. GA.
I am really hoping that the "other" William wasn't married
to a Sarah, too.
I appreciate any help you can give.

Here's my Christian family. I know for sure who the three children of
Sarah Sisson Christian were, but I don't know for sure if their father's
name was Jim. By the time I find Sarah and her children in the census,
she's married to somebody else, and her children never mentioned their
father's name to the next generation. I got the name Jim from Sarah's son
Charles Edward's death certificate, but I have no idea if that's actually
correct.

Susan,
As a matter of fact I do have information on William Christiana, but it
is of questionable reliability. My distant cousin (very distant) sent
me info that has several mistakes along my line (children being born
after the mothers death and such). Take this with a grain of salt, and
if you are able to verify this information, let me know.
I have:
George (Joris) Christian (1760-1817) married Dortha Tease. They had
children

had children
William H. Christian Sr.
Dortha Christian

Hiram Christian
Almira Christian
Abram Christian

Solomon had a second wife Julia Calvin. They had children

William H. Christian, Sr. (1805 - 1882) married Jane DeVoe (1804 - 1889).
The had children
William H. Christian, Jr.

William H. Christian, Jr. (no dates) married Anna Burgur (no dates).
They had children
Virgil Christian(1887 - )
Chancy Christian

That's about all I have for this line. You can contact William R.
Christiana, 5 Middle Rd., Mt. Marion, NY 12456-9998 Phone (914)
246-6092 for more information. He is the one who sent me this
information.
Let me know if this helps.

PS. I would guess that since our nearest common ancestor is Solomon
Christian, that these "Christian's" should be "Christiana's" but that is
just a guess.
PPS. If anyone out there on "The List" has information on George
Christian. Let me know. All I have is the name and dates.
