I am forwarding this posting to the CHRISTIAN surname list from the Library
of Virginia List where I saw it posted and then responded to by someone else.
I would like to know if there is any connection between this CHRISTIAN
family and the family of GIDEON CHRISTIAN, SR. who died in Edgefield Dist., S.
C. with a will and estate records about 1822. {Don't want to stop to find the
exact date.} He arrived in South Carolina probably after the 1790 or 1800
census probably from Virginia according to one undocumented source.
The end of this forwarded Christian query lists a GIDEON CHRISTIAN b. Feb.
5, 1726/27 d. 1796 Lived at Squirrel Park. Most definitely not the same man,
but is the same name and could very well be the same family.
One of my paternal 2-great grandmothers according to the 1916 death
certificate of my great grandfather Carpenter was Sarah CHRISTIAN Carpenter b.
c. 1810-15 in S. C. m. William Carpenter and d. probably in Edgefield County,
South Carolina, after c. Feb. 1883. Have ample documentation on descendents of
Adam Carpenter who arrived in Edgefield District, S.C., about 1804 from Moore
Co., North Carolina. However, death certificate information given by my great
grandmother, Emma Frances Whitlock Carpenter in Augusta, Richmond County,
Georgia, in 1916 is the only record I have found of the CHRISTIAN maiden name
or any other maiden name for Sarah.
Gideon Christian, Sr. d. c. 1822, had a daughter Sarah the right age, but
she married and died in childbrith before c. 1825. Have been attempting to
determine if my Sarah was a granddaughter through one of his sons, or even
perhaps the daughter or granddaughter of his brother William. Estate records
do not give many names with which to work. Census records are to late as she
was married and had all her children before 1850.
However, the later census does have the last name Christie. I have not
been able to determine if this is a corruption of the name or a different
family all together. Any assistance appreciated.

Pam:
Thanks for your interesting info on the Moores and Christians. I have
researched "my" Christians extensively since my Mother always referred to
them as aunts and uncles and they did many nice things for her.
My records begin with David Christian (b. about 1780) in Wicklow, County
Ireland. David's parents were James Christian and Ann Horghton of Ireland.
David was the father of John Christian also born in Ireland in 1807.
When David Christian came to the U.S. before 1810, he settled in Albany, New
York where he stayed until his death, after 1830.
John Christian married Susan Weeks of Wilmington, North Carolina on Dec.
21, 1831. Their children were: John Augustus (b. 1832) in North Carolina
William David (b. 1834) in Wetumpka, Alabama
Susan (b. 1837) in Wetumpka, Alabama
George Henry (b. 1839) in Wetumpka, Alabama
Llewelyn C. (b. 1841) in Wetumpka, Alabama
Georgiana (b. 1844) died as an infant
Susan Weeks Christian died in 1846 and John married Cathering about 1848.
Their children were: Peter B. (b. 1850), Catherine (b, 1851), and
Edward (b. 1853)
The family moved to Walworth County, Wisconsin in 1850.
William David was ordained a Priest in the Episcopal Church on June 13, 1866
in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He married Mary Emma MOORE Averitt on October 26,
1875 at Meridan, Mississippi. He served in Churches in Yazoo City, MS; Lake
Providence, LA; Houma, LA; Abilene Kansas; amd Terrell, TX. He retired in
1900 and lived in San Antonio and later in Pasadena, CA.
The rest of the family stayed in Wisconsin or Minnesota. George Henry
Christian and later his son George Chase Christian became very prominent in
Minneapolis in the milling industry. Their family mansion has become the
home of the Hennepin County Historical Society in Minneapolis.
My interest is in Mary Emma Moore and her family. My Ggrandfather, John
Langan, married her sister, E. Moore about 1870 but I have not found them in
any Census then. She is listed in the 1880 Census under the Christians in
Houma, LA as E. Langan, sister-in law, with her daughter Fannie (my
Grandmother) as Niece 10 years old.
Neither E. Langan nor Fannie Langan appear in the 1900 Census, but Fannie's
husband and their 3 small children are in Hearne, Robertson Co., Texas. I
think Fannie may have died in childbirth.
That 1880 Census listed both MOORE sisters as born in Alabama.
My Ggrandfather John Langan was a Confederate Captain during the Civil War
and fought in the Battle of Vicksburg. He was taken prisoner there and sent
to Enterprise, MS (near Meridan) to a prison camp where he worked as a medic
for the remaider of the War. He must have met E> Moore, Mary Emma Moore
and William Christian SOMEWHERE around there.
John Langan has "disappeared" from then to about 1888 when he appeared on tax
rolls in Hearne, Robertson Co., TX.
Can you help me find these Moores and William Christian?????????????
Thanks, Alice Bruce1013(a)aol.com
Hi folks:
I'm looking for any links to SARAH E. CHRISTIAN, b. 1872 in
Alabama--probably around Fayette or Walker county. She had a brother, Dr.
H.W. Christian, b. 1870, who was allegedly murdered in Fayette County by
the jealous husband of a woman he was "doctoring" a little too well, if
you know what I mean.
Sarah married Jim C. Nelson and had the following children: Aubry, Harley,
Price, Clyde, Essie, Winnie, Carrie, Beatrice and Mary. Sarah, Jim and most
of the kids are buried in Fayette County, near Berry. The others are in
Walker county.
Would appreciate any info I can get!
Thanks--
Suzanne
