Make a Google search for "Almind Sogn i 1900-tallet" and it will bring up a history book of Almind Parish in Kolding up to present times. There are lots of photos which give a good feel for the region and the people. There is also an index at the end. One minor glitch for me is that it's in Danish! Still, very interesting.

Yes, indeed. In the past few days I have located a couple of my 4th cousins and am already FaceBook friends with one who is the family genealogist for her family. Christensens coming out of the woodwork and for so long, we had no clues. You are amazing!

Interesting, the family story about Jep and his brothers. Yes this was common.
Did you notice the cousins in the USA in the 1910 census?

Thanks for the link. I'm going to scan for others as well. Yes, the family story says that Jep and his brothers all left for the USA to avoid the military. It seems this was the case for lots of men then and this database could be helpful.

Here a genealogist offers a free database of emigrants from Schleswig-Holstein:
http://www.rootdigger.de/Emi.htm
I recognized at least one name from your family tree here (same name as one of Anna Elisabeth Wagner's brother), but gave this only a quick look. Birth year same, and he is listed as going to USA/DENMARK. Reason for emigration is to avoid military service. Quite a few young men of this area (former duchy of Schleswig) emigrated and did not report for military service and this is how they are listed. To what extent the draft was a catalyst in any one individual's decision is not clear (not clear to me anyway). No exact birth date or parents' names given; could be a coincidence of names. The creator of the database invites correspondence and includes his contact info.

Hi
Wow up to 53 messages in this thread. Think it's gonna take me a bit to catch up and see what you still need and unfortunately I'm probably not going to have the time until Sunday or Monday. (Lots of family coming and going this week - and here I thought I had an empty nest. Not complaining. I love seeing them, just doesn't leave me much time to search through the parish records and the information on the census records hasn't been accurate - close, but not correct) Anyway these are some of the children's birth dates:
Peder Christensen 6 Aug 1848
Anton Christensen 8 Mar 1852
Carl Martinus Christensen 5 Apr 1854
Caroline Christensen 7 Mar 1856 (might be 1 March)
Ane Marie Christensen 26 June 1858
Mads Kristensen 3 Aug 1860
Hans Frederik Kristensen 22 Feb 1864
Otto Peder Kristensen 25 Oct 1867
Karen Kristensen 4 Jan 1870
Marte Marie Kristensen 20 Oct 1872
Jo
(Have a wonderful time Jane!)

I have found several cousins using FaceBook. Once I know the names and the places, I look for people on FaceBook with the same last name and hometown and send a message asking what they know about their family history and tell them about mine. Once in a while I get lucky. We've exchanged info, photos, and I've even met a few and some are now FaceBook friends.

Big smile. I've seen some volunteer researchers trace families all the way to the living cousins - I will say though that they lose me at some point, where I can't figure out how they did it. :D
More about Peter Christensen from an online family tree. This is the Peter in the census I posted. Caution, again we await in further research proof that the census for Peter is the correct Peter Christensen. (I think it is, though) :D
His wife: Maren Kjerstine MADSEN Lange was born on 2 Feb 1842 in Vollund Mark, Egtved, Jerlev, Vejle (daughter of Mads Møller Christiansen) and died 13 Feb 1919 in Dalby Sogn, Norre Tyrstrup, Vejle. Married Peder Christensen 13 April 1872 in Egtved Mark. Peder was born 08 June 1848 and died in 1923 in Denmark. They had the following children:
* Marie Christine Christensen born 08 Jun 1872 in Dalby Sogn. Died as a toddler 1873 in Tved.
** Mads Christian Møller Christensen born 09 Oct 1874 [Hjorring?] Married Olga Nielsen. No known children.
***Maren Kirstine Christensen born 03 Mar 1877. She married Lauritz Due in Denmark (Lauritz 1877 - ca 1940)
****Anna Margrethe Christensen born 20 Apr 1879 in Dalby Sogn and died 1923 in Tved.
Below is Peter and family on an Ancestry.com public member tree. Photos that show up on pages such as these may or may not apply to the individuals you are looking at - they are photos attached to people of similar names.

The Chris L in the Census records you show, is my grandfather, Christian Lauritz Christensen. The births and some of the deaths of the family are written in the family Bible in Danish. The Bible entries include the Christensen family and some of the Lunds as well. My aunt has the Bible and I have copies.

This can be Niels Fredricksen in 1801. Niels is the father of Maren Nielsen/Nielsdatter. Maren is the mother of Martin/Morten Christensen. (yes, you remember - but at this point my dizzy head need the help, hehe)
1801
Vejle, Elbo, Ullerup, Stoustrup Bye, , 14. familie, FT-1801, C0369
Fridrich Nielsen 37 Gift, Mand, Huusmand med Hartkorn
Karen Hansdatter 26, Gift, Hans Kone
Grethe Fridrichsdatter 7 Ugift, Deres Børn
Hans Fridrichsen 5 Ugift, Deres Børn
Niels Fridrichsen 3 Ugift, Deres Børn <------------
Niels is likely the biological son of Fridrich Nielsen because of the name. He is also likely the biological son of Karen Hansdatter, since he is the youngest born - but not necessarily. In this case a census record can maybe serve as a clue to the volunteer searching the churchbook.
In 1787 in Ullerup, Elbo, Vejle, Friderich Nielsen is age 23, unmarried, and working as a hired hand away from his parents' home.

My goodness, a wealth of information, and that certainly answers the question about Mary Lund buried at Kowanda Cemetery.
"I don't know about an Anna with August, but Mary Marie Ohlsen married August Petersen and Jess Nielsen Lund..."
In my earlier post I meant to say the unidentified Lund was a Mary (not Anna).
Thanks for all that.

With all of the postings yesterday, I just now am seeing this one - somehow I missed it earlier. You mention Anna Lund and August Petersen (that's -sen). I don't know about an Anna with August, but Mary Marie Ohlsen married August Petersen and Jess Nielsen Lund and they are all buried at Kowanda. According to my records, Mary Marie Ohlsen was born 25 Oct 1868 in Kragelund, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and died 3 July 1914. Mary was married to August Petersen who was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 5 Aug 1863 and died 10 Jul 1904. Mary and August had 11 children and many of their decendants are still in that area in Nebraska. There is a good write-up and family photo in the Garden County History Book published by the Historical Society of Garden County written by Mark Beam. I can send a copy to anyone interested. Mark Beam is on the board of the Kowanda Cemetery Association and is an active family and area historian. The times were such that August supplemented his income!
by hauling freight from Julesburg, Big Springs, or Lodgepole to Oshkosh. Following a trip to Oshkosh, August was returning home when his horse shied or fell on the treacherous footing in the canyons and rolled over on him. The saddle ruptured his intestine, but mortally injured, August made it to his own home where three days later he died on July 10, 1904. Thirty days later his last child, Myrtle was born. Mary remarried to Jess Lund. This is my dad's Uncle Jess who owned a tavern in Chappell, NE as did my grandfather, Christian Christensen (Martin Christensen's son, later). And yes, Kowanda is a small cemetery but almost everyone buried there is realted to me!
