re: if anyone has advice on how to find out more about the
Christensen family in Denmark (Karen Girard)
At the risk of repeating something already known, I'd offer that the
phrase should be "this Christensen family" rather than "the
Christensen family," because the chances of any two Christensens being
related without their already knowing it is nearly zero.
This is because until the later stages of the 1800s, only very rich
persons in Denmark had last names (surnames).
For those who weren't and whose father was named Christen, the boys
were known as (firstname) Christensen and the girls were known as
(first name) Christensdatter. (Son and daughter, obviously.) Now, if
that boy was named Hans, i.e. Hans Christensen, his sons became
Hansens and his daughters Hansdatters. Danes had patronyms and not
surnames and there is no such thing as a Danish Christensen family, no
coat of arms, etc., etc.
Old Danish census records, BTW, show wives retaining their "maiden"
names. These means that for a nuclear family with mother, father,
sons and daughters, one could see four patronyms in the census record.
Couple this with the fact that there were very few "approved" first
names (yes, that's true), there were oodles of Christensens around.
Sometimes if there were too many Hans Christensens in one area, the
name got changed to reflect the name of the farm or the like.
This is all nicely covered at the Web site for the Denmark list, and
querying that list is my recommendation for finding out more about
your Danish relatives. There are lots of 1800s Danish census records
online and there is also a listing from the Copenhagen police of Danes
who left the country (emigrated) through that city, and this list is
the best gateway to that information.
Be warned, however, that when you start searching Danish records, you
must know the Parish where your ancestor lived, because there will be,
again, lots of people with the same name, none of them related.
Parish is like "county," of course, although an even smaller
subdivision. It's perhaps interesting to note that in dealing with
Danish records one is dealing with a country that did *not* separate
church and state. The official birth/death records, etc. were kept
under the authority of the local parish (Lutheran) priest.
Read about the system of patronyms, Danish burial customrs, etc. (in
the FAQ) and join the Denmark list here.

The actual "joining" instructions are hard to find there. Here they
are.

This is for "digests." If you want individual e-mails, substitute "L"
