Hi Everyone,
For those of you who are descended from Elisha Crisman, you may remember
a couple of months ago I told you that a story about one of his
descendants , which I wrote, would appear in a new book which is a
companion to the PBS series Ancestors. The story concerns Elisha's son
James, Sr and his house that he built in 1813. I just received my copy
of the book. It is titled IN SEARCH OF OUR ANCESTORS, 101 Inspiring
Stories of Serendipity and Connection in Rediscovering Our Family
History. (Whew). by Megan Smolenyak, copyright 2000. My contribution is
entitled "Dancing Ghosts". The book is officially out on 10 April, but
is already available on Amazon.com.
I hope you all will get it, as it does document a small part of our
history.

Hi Helen and Everyone,
My name is Mary Helen Elizabeth CHRISMAN. I am new to the list and to
genealogy. I recently was in touch with our list owner, who after hearing
some of my basic info, offered to check on a few things. First, thank you
Helen. Second, I have since read through the mailing list archives and
wanted to let you know that one of your own postings rang a bell. You
mentioned a Chrisman migration from PA to the Shenandoah Valley, then back
to PA. If you had added, "and finally from PA to CA", you would have told me
exactly what my grandmother once did!
For those who don't know me, I have just started my research and haven't
even looked at census records, so in many ways this posting is premature.
On the other hand, you know I exist and what I am up to. If anything rings
a bell, please contact me. I am research CHRISMAN'S who migrated from the
Phoenixville, Chester Co., PA area and settled in Northern California's San
Mateo (Pescadero), Santa Clara (San Jose area) and Santa Cruz counties in
the mid 1860's. I believe these three men are related and probably came out
west together.
Josiah CHRISMAN was born in Phoenixville (between 1830-48, with 1841-42 the
most likely) and came to CA via the Isthmus of Panama in 1864 (according to
family legend). He engaged in farming, stock raising and dairyman
activities.
Josiah married Mary Ann BRITTON in San Jose, CA in Nov 28 1866.
They had two known sons William Henry (b. Dec 12, 1867; d. Nov 8 1932) and
Walter Louis (b. May 7, 1872; d. Sep 27, 1937). Both men married HOBSON
women in 1896, and 1895 respectively.
J.H. (Jesse) CHRISMAN is Josiah's brother (family legend and biographical
material). By 1870 he had established a hay and feed business in San Jose.
He died Dec. 17, 1921 (birthplace listed as PA, aprx. age 85, everything
else "unknown").
John CHRISMAN married Ruth HOBSON on Mar 29, 1866 in San Jose, CA
In the next generation down, these two women are sisters:
Elizabeth Ann CHRISMAN (b. Jul 2, 1869) m. George Horace STEELE (Apr 9,
1894); d. Mar 14, 1950.
Jessie M. CHRISMAN m. Frank J. EVANS (Apr. 19, 1897)
Additional information I have indicates their father is "J. Chrisman" - you
pick which one. Based on newspaper articles, I believe that "J. Chrisman"
had other children as well.
I have fairly complete and provable information on William and Walter
Chrisman and Elizabeth (Chrisman) Steele's descendants. Of course, I'm
willing to share info.
For all of you Pennsylvania Chrisman's waiting for me to get back to your
families, see you real soon!
Mary Helen E. Chrisman
